The Czechs are a good example. They locked down immediately.Closed their borders, insisted on masks in public. Job done, virus almost gone. They relaxed, lifted the restrictions, got back to normal, and even had a party on Charles Bridge in Prague to celebrate the fact.
What's happened since? They are getting hammered.

People live extremely closely in Singapore. Do you not realise that. There is limited space there because it is a small island which is both a city and country. Hence the reason I used it rather than Australia where Melbourne and Sydney have 2/5 of its population but are large sprwaling cities with 4 times the population of Birmingham or New Zealand where Auckland another larger city has 1/4 of the New Zealand population. The bottom line is that Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia and Singapore all have extremely low rates and all have strict border controls which we dont have.

As for saying that Air Bridges have not been responsible it is noticeable that Johnson's government have now followed the policy and are today announcing the 30 people who can meet are being reduced to 6.

Those countires do have low rates . They always have had low rates. They didn't have tens of thousands of people on holiday in virus hotspots in the spring. That is one of the reasons none of those countires is a comparison.

The virus is here, it was here before we realised and closing the borders to countries with low rates is pointless now.

We should have acted earlier but Johnson was too busy looking at Brexit. It isnt too late at all. Stopping cases coming in should be first priority. Having Air Bridges has seen loads of people come back with cases fuelling the problems we are now having. We also need to be more pro active and closing places down that are causing problems but then they shouldnt have been opened in the first place. The only way to deal with the virus is to get rid of it and in Wales we were very close to it but keeping cases out is necessary. You cannot pick and choose as you want to do. Either you take decisive action or it just keeps growing as has happened recently. Other countries arent letting people in. You might not like it but that is necessary to beat it.

We were never anywhere near getting rid of it in Wales. We were further from getting rid of it than Scotland and N. Ireland and look what happened there.

Air bridges may have some "new" virus back but the vast majority will be British virus originally.

We need to close places that are causing issues - I completely agree. This is the fault of WG. There is still no sign of Drakeford.

These businesses had to open back up, they should have opened with guidance in place (well done WG!). Not to understand this is naive and selfish. Or potentially just stupid? How could these businesses survive a minimum of 6 months without making money? There would be millions unemployed and even more deaths. Once again you may be safe to lock yourself away and take a state pension, the vast majority are not in your fortunate position.

There are very few countires that have completely or even largely closed borders. The UK can't do that we are far too interconnected and now it would be pointless.

The alternative to doing what I suggest is to follow your ideas as England has done and that has been no better than Wales and up to yesterday every day from the beginning of July the Welsh figures have been lower than the equivalent day in England. Quite honestly the figures are out of control and will rise further. I suspect n the near future that Rhondda Cynon Taff and Neath Port Talbot will end in lockdown and I wont be surprised if we have another national lockdown affecting all the businesses you claim to care about when many could have opened safely if we had closed our borders.

Here we go, masks in shops from Monday

Also, the fragmented approach to meeting outdoors makes no sense whatsoever.

People are going to get really fed up of the unsustainable nature of these rules!

I dont agree with the mask policy. Quite simply having masks in shops in England and Scotland hasnt stopped cases rising there and not having them didnt prevent the figures reducing massively in Wales. The one thing it is going to do is give a consistent approach throughout the UK and that can only be good news. Similarly I suspect the 6 people indoor in Wales has been done for the same reason although there is clear evidence allowing more to meet outdoor in Wales hasnt had any huge distance on the figures so little surprise they have left that open. Interestingly there is an article today saying the Johnson government were at war over the 6 people rule.

We do need a consistent approach across all the UK but that will only work when Johnson works with the devolved nations which hasnt been happening. You only have to look at the position regarding Portugal when England didnt support the Welsh and Scottish approach last week but are doing so now and when Gibralter had well over 100 cases per 100000 cases but England didnt remove the Air Bridge. Something like 7 times the current high rate in Wales but Johnson was still prepared to let people in.

The face masks policy will only work if everyone does it, that's what the evidence shows us. It helps prevent spread but won't guarantee not getting infected that's why distancing and hand washing are still important.

It's not a buffet, you can't pick and choose what rules to follow. People ignoring the rules do us all a disservice.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

One thing that is not being shown is that due to most of these new cases being in the younger population, the number cases is increasing but the number of hospital admissions is not.
In other words they are not getting ill, as we have always known.
There is no point in making eveyone wear masks in shops if they are allowing large groups of youngsters to have raves & parties etc.
I am still wearing a mask, glasses & gloves in the shops and will continue to do so during my once per week shop.

A very slight uptick as you can see when you put them on the chart.

We should be basing our actions on things that work and not following things that dont work.

Wales has not used masks in shops and the figures have dropped. England and Scotland have been using them and the figures have risen so that says that using masks in shops is not working. They will be far more useful in schools or offices where people are next to each other for hours. Similarly in pups and restaurants . If we want to make masks compulsory then everywhere indoors should be covered.

What we do know is that there are things that do work. Social distancing at 2 meters has worked and that is where we should be concentrating our efforts along with handwashing.

There is also clear evidence from elsewhere in the world that the closure of borders has prevented large scale amounts of coronavirus and when we had the stay local rule cases dropped massively. These are things that have reduced the virus whilst that isnt the case with masks.

Not conclusively

Systematic reviews of facemask use suggest relative risk (RR) reductions for infection ranging from 6—80%, including

It's common sense. a mask is a barrier. if everyone wears one and keeps their distance, it will be 100% effective

The worst offenders for invading the 2m space when out are some of the idiots wearing masks. They suddenly think they are invincible. Just keep 2m and everyone will be fine, how hard is it.

If someone has coughed or sneezed a minute or so before you get to that spot, the droplets will still be in the air. You may not be aware that you have walked into that, but wearing a mask with protect you.It will certain;t cut down on the amount of virus you take in which is the important bit

Wearing masks reduces output by up to 80% so that means potentially only 20% of any infectious material makes it to 2m away. Much better odds especially as viral load has an effect too. The less of the virus you are exposed to, the less likely you are to be seriously ill or die.

The point about raves etc, no one is allowing youngsters to have raves and beach parties, they are just doing it and the police need to be strong and make examples. Don't just punish the organisers, arrest some of the party/rave attendees too and slap them with 200 hours community service, then make it 400 and a large fine if they repeat offend. Use cameras to film them, send a strong message.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?
