Hornets on Sunday 19:31 - Feb 24 with 293344 views | EllDale | They’re tweeting that their “matchday operations” are being restricted for the home game against Barrow on Sunday for reasons that they don’t want to divulge at the moment. The bottom line is that the crowd capacity is limited to 920 and there will be no cash admissions on the day. Wonder what that’s all about?

RFL make the playoffs deliberately unfair to the lower placed teams. Unlike football where there is a home/away and then a final, everyone seemingly gets to play a final. Today Hornets won the Elimination Final. Doncaster won the Qualifying final. It now goes like this: Semi Final 1: North Wales Crusaders vs Rochdale Hornets Loser is eliminated; winner progresses to the preliminary final Semi Final 2: Swinton Lions vs Doncaster Loser gets a 2nd chance, Winner progresses to the final Preliminary final Loser of Semi Final 2 vs Winner of Semi Final 1 Winner progresses to the final; loser eliminated Grand Final Winner of Semi Final 2 vs Winner of Preliminary final For Hornets it means that to be promoted the need to win the next three games: 1) Away at Crusaders (League game finished 28-24 to Crusaders) 2) Away at Doncaster (League game finished 26-20 to Doncaster) 3) Away at Swinton (League game finished 34-14 to Swinton) All games are winnable but winning three on the bounce away from home at teams that finished above you is tricky. Do it and you probably deserve to go up. [Post edited 11 Sep 2022 20:25]

They do indeed. But they will be away from home and as both clubs share the gate they will have more money coming in that they would at home perhaps.

Good for them - wasn't aware that the playoff gates were split 50/50 but I guess there are win bonuses and match monies to pay for additional games. And with their tails up they're even putting a bit of practice in for the singers on Tuesday:

The system rewards higher placed teams. H and A games give no reward to higher placed team. Hornets were next to last qualifier so got only one home game (oldham bottom qualifier so got no home game. Although N Wales lost their play off game they finished above hornets (and beat them twice) so are at home next week. System was used for many years in Australian rugby league and VFL, although when it was used the play offs tended to be all based at the one large ground….MCG for AFL and SCG for RL. As those leagues expanded beyond the single city they developed their play off systems further. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

The counter to this pioneer is that the argument that model just prolongs the process for the lower teams who ultimately are eliminated. Tier 3 Rugby League in the UK is not the same standard or commercial interest of the NRL and at £16 for an adult, aside it being a local derby, both Hornets and Oldham would need a miracle of results to achieve promotion. Hornets will have three lots of travel costs and three lots of win bonuses to pay if they succeed in their aim of getting promoted. Swinton on the other hand have at least two home games and a 2nd bit of the cherry if they slip up next week. I am not sure how good that is for the little clubs in the current arrangements of Rugby League but it certainly isn't equitable.

Have the RFL checked that Rangi Chase is ok to play this many games? All jokes aside, I know it's a little annoying when a football team sneaks into 7th on the last day of the season and wins the playoffs, but making teams jump through this many hoops after a full season seems unfair.

I think that must be the first year in a long time that every Hornets home attendance didn't top 1,000 including the big games where the full Main Stand was operated. Suprised there was that few there but I guess that is more a comment on the state of rugby league in the 3rd tier rather than those team involved.

By rights, that attendance should be enough for Mazey to STFU about fully opening the main stand But we know he's not bright enough to take that on board

Hornets on Sunday on 16:04 - Sep 12 with 2651 views | EllDale | He can always try and use restrictions as an excuse though unfortunately. "People won't come because they think they won't be able to get in," sort of thing. We know it's bull but others may not. The only time they've got near 900 was at Easter when they dished out loads of free tickets to past players. And they boosted their gates last season by dishing out free tickets to junior teams which isn't necessary a bad policy but the exercise didn't producing repeat custom. The fact of the matter seems to be that their attendances have fallen off a cliff for whatever reason. Might be an ageing fanbase, might be that they're in a league with a lot of small clubs whose fans don't travel, who knows.

Owners, board members, committee men all come and go. Some from the town, some not so fortunate. Regardless of the sport and the level, I want to see Rochdale teams do well…even cheer a local team playing tiddlywinks.

I'm not sure how such poor recent crowds will see Hornets through the winter months. https://stats.rugbyleaguerecords.com/teamseason.php?cat=14&subcat=2022 Based on these attendances I make it that approximately 7,000 went through the rugby league turnstiles at Spotland over the season. Assuming they keep all the gate money and at £13.33 excluding VAT (£16 entry), that's a maximum revenue of £94,000 for the season, before any costs applied and most likely less because of concessions, season tickets and free tickets given out. Real revenues will be much less. Take off player wages, travel, stadium rent, stewarding, referees, training facilities, admin expenses and the like and I can't see how its anything other than a loss, although the amount of central funding is unknown. Rugby League is at a massive crossroads with the IMG mess that has been thrust upon it in an attempt to modernise the game. What 2023 looks like for Hornets remains to be seen.

After a "discussion" over social media i seem to remember Mr Mazey saying the whole central funding amount was used to cover the annual rent for the ground, he contested the amount published on the football clubs statement (regarding the Fiji game) saying it was actually slightly higher than suggested, somewhere round £18k from memory. At the circa £18k level you’re suggesting NB, the rent is about £350 per week or £50 per calendar day. Not sure what else can be rented for £50 a day but in these inflationary times you won’t get far on two ponys.

You know you have a problem when Cornwall RFL club is getting twice your average gate. Swinton are still averaging 1000, Keighley nearly 2000 and Hornets barely 400 and still falling. What a legacy for Mazey. Even Lock Lane amateur club achieved a higher attendance than Hornets recent home gates. With teams in the Championship now going part time there is little prospect of a league 3 team surviving as a professional team next season. Mazey may whinge about the restrictions that his low levels of rent bring, but how would they be able to survive if they needed to pay a £250k half share cost of running the stadium? Or even their own ground? He may like the status of being a club Chairman, but he doesn't appear to have the deep pockets to be throwing 6 figure sums at the team every year. Big Doug should pop along to tell us what the plan is.
