When will the penny drop? 00:44 - Aug 18 with 17514 viewsDr_Parnassus

Everything that was warned about with regards to switching to a style that the players aren’t suited to is now visible to most. There is a very good reason we didn’t start trying to be Brazil of the 1970’s over the last 2 seasons… and as a result saw the side be one of the best in the league… it’s because the manager realised the limitations of the squad and played to their strengths. That’s management.

I am wondering at what point the collective penny will drop that we cannot continue to play this way UNTIL we have the squad capable to do it. The Championship is too strong a league to be doing that, last time we got to this level we were a slick, well oiled machine with players capable of playing Premier League football in Dyer, Williams, Rangel and Britton. That spine would go on to win the League Cup, finish top half in the Premier League and perform well in Europe…. A championship spine it was not.

We had the players with ability leagues above the level they were playing at meaning we could afford to take some risks with regards to playing style. A nearing prime Leon Britton in league 1 seems a bit laughable now doesn’t it? That’s because it was.

The situation sadly is not the same today. We need to play to our strengths, get some points on the board, get the players in that we need and slowly incorporate the system you want. People talk of long term plans… and then change a system overnight?! We will get slaughtered at this level.

How about that actually becomes the longer term plan touted about and we slowly implement it while protecting our Championship status? Too mad an idea?

We do not want to lose our league position and drop down to league 1 as I see some people now happily stating they wouldn’t mind. I find that sad to read and extremely naive.

Relegation won’t mean us having an easy season to test this style against, we will lose even more players, have less income to replace them and the spiral continues. It’s an arrogant point of view to think relegation can be handled easily by the club.

Relegation is not a positive option and the fact we have gone from play offs to the Premier League to accepting the realities and the weighing up of pros and cons of League 1 football in such a short space of time should tell you something ain’t right.

I like Russell Martin, I think he has a good future in the game, my issue is not with him and I hope he stays for a long time to build something. My issue is with the attitude surrounding everything at the moment that we must play a certain way immediately, regardless of the damage it will cause.

You replied to the wrong post then.

Replied to the correct one but as I stated, never mentioned Burnley did I!?

I just stated fighting against relegation, never used Burnley as the example and certainly never mentioned them.

But as I said, think most long term fans would gladly take entertaining football at championship football rather to bore fest football and fighting relegation from the prem......saying that, both are better options than fighting relegation in the bottom 2 leagues playing awful football.

There is nothing to buy, it’s just simply a fact.

Again, it’s not just about passing 5 yards. It’s about passing accurately under pressure, having the vision and intelligence to do it to an area that isn’t going to put the receiver under pressure whilst also being aware of the opposition positioning up field so the passes then have purpose.

It’s not something you work on in training and good to go in a couple of months. This is something you can either do or you can’t by this age. Training will enhance it and perfect it, but if you can’t play this way then you are not likely to be able to any time soon. Tate is a fine example of having a player in the side who others can cover for if you have those specialists in your side.

The likes of Britton were a god send to them. Any trouble give it to Leon and he would steer the ball into the correct channel and away from the press. We don’t have a Leon, we don’t have an Ashley Williams to look up and spray a 40 yard pass to the wingers feet, we don’t have a striker to pass to who can hold the ball up allowing the play to be shifted from the defensive 2 thirds to the attacking 2 thirds, we don’t have wingers who act as outballs which stop the opposition from wanting to commit too much to the press etc etc etc etc etc

There is an awful lot that goes into this style of play. Far more than “any pro can pass 5 yards” as seems to be the buzz sentence recently. There are many facets we need specialists at which allows that style to work, we have almost none of those components.

Not a simple fact.

It is exactly the sort of thing you can work on in training and be good to go (maybe in a bit more than a couple of months.)

Which players in our first XI would you say are definitely unable to play RM way, and need to be replaced?

I didn’t say you did, did I?

You replied to someone giving Burnley as an example, and you quoted it and replied. It seems you either didn’t realise how good Burnley were and now scrambling, or didn’t understand what was being discussed.

I’ll guess the former.

I don’t think many would take mid table Championship football over Premier League football, relegation fighting or not. Be that long or short term fans, in fact I’m certain.

It is a simple fact. Tiki taka is not just being able to make a 5 yard pass, that’s more than a simple fact… it’s a given.

I have already given the list of players that will not excel in this system. Cullen, Fulton, Bidwell, Manning, Latibaudiere, Bennett. There’s a few to whet your appetite, there is probably more.

Well I'd think there must be many more, if you state that we have to change our whole system or die.
You whole stance is, we don't have players able to adapt to the system, then you name 6 out of our whole squad.
4 of which, won't even be in our first XI.

Bidwell already being replaced as we speak.
Lati replaced.
Cullen won't start.
Fulton won't start.

So we only need to replace 2 players in our XI? Wow, that's heck of an upheaval.

You do realise that’s 6 of our starting 11 in the last game don’t you? More than half of our starting team.

I didn’t realise you wanted to go through every single player of our what, 40 man squad. As I said, the names there are a start.

As and when more come into the starting side I will let you know if they have the technical ability to play tiki taka football to the standard required. Korey Smith has played this year hasn’t he, add him to the list.

As it stands 6 of 11 aren’t good enough for this system, if you think that’s minimal you need your head read.

Last game, not next game.
And it's not me who says these players need to be sold, it's you.

I'm sure Laird will be in for Lati. I still think he should stay though. I'm sure his years at Man City bode him well for being able to learn a passing style. DO NOT SELL.

Cullen out and Piroe in. Not sure Cullen will ever be good enough for our first XI, but I'd still keep him and give him every chance. Maybe loan him out. DO NOT SELL.

Bidwell I'd like to keep and do believe he can play in this system, albeit not as well as someone else. I'd agree to sell him to make way for a younger player on less wages. Not because I don't believe he can adapt. SELL.

Bennett I believe will be good enough to play this system. DO NOT SELL.

Manning I also think is good enough to learn and improve in order to get in this team or be a verey good sub. His first appearance at CB tells me that. Never played there before. DO NOT SELL.

It's a shame that you think all these players need to be sold.
Or even more of a shame IMO, if you think that they should stay and sack the manager instead.

edit...I forgot Fulton.
I would not sell Fulton either. He can definitely do a ob for us, long term in RMs system. He has experience and guts at this level. He has been with us for years and has already changed systems numerous times. To say he is unable to do it is silly IMO. DO NOT SELL.

So just to clarify, I do not think we should sell any of those players for the reasons you do.
Possubly Bidwell, but simply to balance books and get younger player in.

Where did I say these players need to be sold? Can you quote that please?

Sounds like you are lying again. Stop making up what I’ve said please; it makes your weak points look even weaker. I’ve not mentioned selling them once, I happen to think many have the potential to be here longer than the management staff, we rarely have a manager stay longer than 2 years in the last quarter of a century.

Selling all the decent players that can’t play the current managers style is madness.

I’ve not seen Laird for a prolonged period of time before, he’s never played at this level. You have as much idea what his technical abilities at this level are like as I do.

Piroe is one striker. One striker that Martin doesn’t seem to rate, not started him once in the league. We have no idea if he can play the role.

Bidwell cannot play this system, he isn’t calm under pressure, isn’t quick enough and there is nobody in the box for him to cross to as we don’t have a proper number 9 when he is playing Cullen.

Bennett is not good enough to play this system and never will be.

Manning is not good enough.

Where did I say these players need to be sold or the manager needs to be sacked? You are lying continuously.

Edit - where did I say sell Fulton? Why are you going on about selling? You are even saying I have given reasons for selling? You are either a compulsive liar or you need to take a break from the internet. I’ve not been told that I’ve said so many things that I clearly haven’t for a long time. Do you just read what you want to read or something?

Bizarre.

You are stating the players who you feel do not have the ability to be trained into playing for RM or in this system. That is the whole point of this debate.
You said the players aren't good enough. You then named which ones aren't good enough.
*YOU MAY NOT HAVE SPECIFICALLY STATED TO SELL THOSE SPECIFIC PLAYERS, BUT THAT IS THE WHOLE DEBATE. STREWTH!!

According to you, they can't be trained, so what on earth do you want to do with them?

Less the asking "quote that please". It's extremely annoying, as you purposely structure your posts and replies in a way that you can' be brought up on it.

OK, so if you spin it again to your way...
You are not saying to sell these players. Selling these player is madness.
BUT. playing them is also madness in this system according to you. And they cannot improve.
You think we should keep them until RM leaves the club, either by being sacked, or poached?
Makes no sense, sorry.

Eh? What on earth are you going on about?

The debate is nothing to do with selling players, the debate is who is technically good enough to play Russell Martins style. You putting your sentences into caps isn’t going to change that fact.

Cullen has good potential in my opinion. But he’ll never be a striker that can fit into Martins way of playing. Doesn’t mean he should be sold though, this system may only be in practice for 6 months before it’s binned off and then we have got rid of a player with good potential for nothing.

Who said they can’t be trained? You are making things up again. I’m sure Cullen is a very good trainer, doesn’t mean I think he can be trained to be a focal point of attacks or target man though. He’s a poacher.

If you don’t want me to ask you to prove I’ve said something, it may be a good idea to stop making up what I’ve said. If that annoys you then stop doing it.

Where did I say they cannot improve? You are again making things up.

Cullen I’m sure will improve one hell of a lot. But I don’t think that improvement will come in the form of being a target man or focal point for attacks, it’s not his natural game. He will be a very useful player in the right system. You seem to think Russell Martin will be here forever now? He won’t be.

Sorry you think complete sense makes no sense, I literally can’t put it into simpler terms for you than I already have. It’s not difficult.

You are saying here that Cullen will not be useful in RM system. You may not have sad those words, but don't be such a bellend and continue to pretend you are not insinuating things.
You are saying here that you think Cullen can improve and be useful in the right system.
You suggest that RM won't be here forever. This puts accross that you would like Cullen to stay here because you want him to play for us once Russell Martin has left.
You have already stated that you don't think he can play for RM and he can't adapt to play in his style.

"Cullen I’m sure will improve one hell of a lot. But I don’t think that improvement will come in the form of being a target man or focal point for attacks, it’s not his natural game. He will be a very useful player in the right system. You seem to think Russell Martin will be here forever now? He won’t be."

I’m afraid the only bellend here is the one who keeps pretending someone has said thing that they haven’t.

I don’t insinuate anything, I very clearly explain them. If you have to rely on interpretation of what you deem is insinuation, then it’s very likely you have got it wrong.

No I don’t think Cullen can play in an RM system, I categorically stated so when I said:-

“Cullen has good potential in my opinion. But he’ll never be a striker that can fit into Martins way of playing. ”

Why are you repeating points I’ve clearly made? My point hasn’t changed in the 15 minutes since I last made it if that’s what you are hoping?

What point are you making?

THE PENNY HAS DROPPED!
You want RM to change his style of play. If he doesn't, you are waiting for him to be sacked or poached..
You have no interest in anything improving here. Your only interest is to show how RM doesn't know what he's doing and you know better.

The penny may have dropped on your head maybe?

If after all your nonsense, that is your take away then I can only assume you are trolling.

I shall repeat my very simple to understand stance:-

- we do not have the technical group required to play this way
- we should adapt our style until we can bring in these players
- if we cannot bring in these players then Martin needs to adapt longer term
- if he cannot adapt and our Championship status is under threat then he will be sacked

Due to the presence of option 2, 3 and 4 it would be silly to sell everyone who isn’t a good fit for a system that may well not be in practice in 6 months time, performance depending.

I’m really not sure how anyone can be the least bit confused by this.

I just can't understand how we can bring in "these players" without selling any.
I don't think we need to sell many, as they can adapt.

*You don't think they can adapt.
*You also don't want to sell the players.
*You also think that Martin needs to sell players.

That's what I find confusing.

I didn’t say without selling any. You are making up these sentences that nobody had said and then claiming to be confused by them.

You said I was suggesting we sell them all, when in fact I didn’t mention selling at all. You are now saying that I said we shouldn’t sell any, when I haven’t said anything of the sort.

Very little of the things you are claiming I am saying, I have actually said.

You are confusing yourself.

Oh no, you said that most of our squad is incapable of adapting to the manager's style of play, but keep them all anyway, so they can play again when the manager gets sacked or poached

Where did I say that?

Specifically “keep them all anyway”… I can guarantee I didn’t say that.

I think what you are referring to is when I correctly said “selling them all would be stupid”.

There is a big difference between not thinking we should sell them all and thinking we should keep them all.

Now you have been exposed about 5 or 6 times for this dishonest method of debate. I suggest you stop because you will not get a single one past me without me bringing you up on it, I can assure you of that.
