Everything that was warned about with regards to switching to a style that the players aren’t suited to is now visible to most. There is a very good reason we didn’t start trying to be Brazil of the 1970’s over the last 2 seasons… and as a result saw the side be one of the best in the league… it’s because the manager realised the limitations of the squad and played to their strengths. That’s management.
I am wondering at what point the collective penny will drop that we cannot continue to play this way UNTIL we have the squad capable to do it. The Championship is too strong a league to be doing that, last time we got to this level we were a slick, well oiled machine with players capable of playing Premier League football in Dyer, Williams, Rangel and Britton. That spine would go on to win the League Cup, finish top half in the Premier League and perform well in Europe…. A championship spine it was not.
We had the players with ability leagues above the level they were playing at meaning we could afford to take some risks with regards to playing style. A nearing prime Leon Britton in league 1 seems a bit laughable now doesn’t it? That’s because it was.
The situation sadly is not the same today. We need to play to our strengths, get some points on the board, get the players in that we need and slowly incorporate the system you want. People talk of long term plans… and then change a system overnight?! We will get slaughtered at this level.
How about that actually becomes the longer term plan touted about and we slowly implement it while protecting our Championship status? Too mad an idea?
We do not want to lose our league position and drop down to league 1 as I see some people now happily stating they wouldn’t mind. I find that sad to read and extremely naive.
Relegation won’t mean us having an easy season to test this style against, we will lose even more players, have less income to replace them and the spiral continues. It’s an arrogant point of view to think relegation can be handled easily by the club.
Relegation is not a positive option and the fact we have gone from play offs to the Premier League to accepting the realities and the weighing up of pros and cons of League 1 football in such a short space of time should tell you something ain’t right.
I like Russell Martin, I think he has a good future in the game, my issue is not with him and I hope he stays for a long time to build something. My issue is with the attitude surrounding everything at the moment that we must play a certain way immediately, regardless of the damage it will cause.

I have a question, given everything said in the OP and given that Martin seems incapable of or unwilling to change his style/tactics/strategy/way of thinking, how can you think he has a good future in the game?
Nottingham Forest fans weren't initially keen on having Cooper, maybe after reading our forums and watching how we played the last few months but they love him now...a lot. Cooper made changes, he didn't go there and try to force the same style (or styles) on them that he used here. he used what he had to his best advantage. That does make him a good manager.
If Martin persists with his flawed plan, refuses to change and gets another job after us and carries on the same, he won't have any future.
Maybe his time here will teach him a few things, maybe our club will suffer but he will learn. It's not something I'll be happy about though, I want and need him to learn now! |

The next 15 games are vital for him and the club, not so much in terms of league position, as I feel we are safe, but in terms of getting the fans back behind him.
Currently the bad feeling towards him is growing.

Because as far as I and 99% of my Swans mates are concerned, we’ve got about as much chance of old pence coming back, than Martin has of changing from his PLAN A
You wouldn’t call him stupid, after all he owns 2 successful Vegetarian businesses, talked his way into an ex-Premiership set up after finishing 19th & 13th in league 1, and said he’s learning from his mistakes, and admitted so after the Sheffield game. (I think he blamed himself in another game as well)
You could call him stubborn, because the players are trying to stick to his plan, albeit half of them lack the skills to play it, yet he still persists in playing it, then throws them under the bus for various questionable reasons IE. fitness, not carrying out his instructions, not being physical enough ect

It’s why I see Russ as dangerous He is smart and obviously ambitious .
I’ve interviewed God Knows how many on my lifetime and Russ would have been a compelling interview . He sells himself well,so much so ,ordinary folk are taken in through their basic honesty or that which they perceive in a chap they only hear and see on telly.
In going to a job interview in a recent Premier League club as we were would or should have taken some planning . At most interviews,much drivel is spouted without much real prominence . Our Winter has swallowed it whole ,without doubt .
Potter was equally smart ,considered but more circumspect and he couldn’t wait to join the massive and famous Brighton and Hove Albion eschewing the fantastic city and people of Swansea .
