Will be self-serving wordy pretentious drivel.

You must live in a very different world to me mate, HR is human resources, which took over from personell departments, two very very different animals. The old personell departments were very much 50/50 and on the fence help both sides people ( at least the ones I've been associated with ), who you could talk to about literally ANYTHING, home problems, work issues, union issues, health, anything. And they listened even if they couldn't always help.
I've found since it went to HR they have become cold, uncaring totally employer biased places.
The first two lines are so naive I can't even get my head round it. No offence meant, but I get the impression from previous posts you are not exactly shop-floor orientated, so are completely blinkered as to all the good unions do, which far outway the bad, which is all you hear about. Again, no offence, perhaps just differing experience and a different walk of life involved.

No offence taken. Always open to being educated, the basis of every debate.

I work for a manufacturer but nowhere near the shop floor.

Just had a quick read of the Bloom Box stuff and it appears that it isn't a new energy source, merely a new means of converting that source into electricity. It's key selling point is that it is somehow greener than conventional generation. I saw somehow because it is still essentially a fossil fuel burner that produces CO2.

Bloom Energy claim an efficiency of ~50%, which is less than the ~60% of a conventional gas turbine power plant. So it's major selling point appears to be it's green credentials.

Another thing that really pissed me off about her, she got Dennis awarded a hereditary knighthood. It's already been passed onto her son.

She really hated her working class roots and ensured the title is passed down the generations.

Bitch. .

Thanks for this. I read the Independent today & could not understand why they referred to Sir Mark Thatcher. I thought Jesus! when did I miss that bit if syncophancy? Now I know its because of the inheritance angle. Our country has a lot of issues to sort out & this is one of them. The reality is that the royal family are top of the tree and need to be got rid of as they are the top of a pyramid of class privilige.

At my age I should not be doing this!

As I said, it may not be that. My friend couldn't tell me much more than I posted. Let's be honest though, plenty of technology gets held back for various reasons.......and we are talking about the us. I don't think we will know if this technology exists for a very long time but I believe he was telling me what he thought was the truth.

Yeah I got sidetracked sorry. I'd slightly prefer nuclear to coal-fired was my gist hence do we need the coal if we go nuclear?

However both are better than thousands of propellers sitting off the coastline.

Nuclear power has one of the same failings as wind energy in that it is intermittent; nuclear power plants have to be taken offline for refuelling and maintenance and it takes some time to get them back up, unlike gas and coal plants. They can also end up being out of service for months, like San Onofre in the US (and at the same time that some UK daily rags were poking fun at a wind turbine which broke in a mega gale, a main supply cable to a UK nuclear power station broke, taking the whole plant offline). They are not flexible, you can't just turn up the wick, but then, wind energy on its own is not that flexible either. Another issue with nuclear is the huge lead time and the fact that globally, most projects are well behind schedule. I still think they have a role to play but there are some serious issues which many green bashers have conveniently overlooked (or perhaps are simply unaware of).

What you can do, and Cambridge Uni physics professor David Mackay explains it much better than me, is to pair intermittent renewables like solar and wind with storage technologies. In Spain, solar energy is stored in molten salt, for up to seven hours, so solar can generate energy round the clock. In the Canaries, wind turbines are being paired with pumped storage facilities - a pool above a pool basically - so excess wind power can be used to pump water uphill when the wind is blowing and the water can drive turbines when the wind isn't blowing.

We already have pumped storage in the UK, it's just we need more of it, as part of a mix of techologies (not just gas, gas, gas, George).

It's not as promising as it looks, my friend. There will be hellish planning issues in the UK because we have a much higher population density than the US; we will have those issues whether or not shale gas is fund to definitely cause earth tremors and pollute water sources

Then there's the fact that shale gas is still a fossil fuel, with all the attendant problems....

What would Maggie do (back on topic briefly :) )?

So fracking is a short term fix. It's either that or having the punters marching on Downing Street when the lights go out.I don't accept nuclear is sporadic - depends on what kind of reactor you use.And it'll be a fill - in until you humans finally decide to mine Helium3 on our nearest celestial body.

Maggie would have approved - more privately sourced wonga for the UK.

Ahhh so that explains the knighthood. I was reading the Standard earlier about how Mark and Carol had decisded to retrurn to the UK then it said that someone called Sir Mark was commenting on the funeral arrangements. Read it and read it three times before realising that Mark was now a "sir". FFS....

As for hating here working class roots that would explain the ridiculously affected way that she spoke.

I was also reminded today that she'd imposed the poll tax on Scotland first. The hate is returning in force.....

Thatcher did not have working class roots.

"Almost everything said of Thatcher's early years was untrue, partly through her own invention. She was the daughter of a prosperous civic leader who merely began life as a "grocer". She went to a fee-paying school and to Oxford at her father's expense, gliding easily into the upper echelons of student politics."

So she was right to close them then by that reasoning. No?

In some ways yes, as it was a cleaner and more efficient way to produce energy.
The downside is that, Power Stations need huge amounts of natural gas to sustain them and used up our resources very quickly.
It would have been far better to use that gas in homes etc., as would have lasted far longer.

Having read all this thread, one point has not been mentioned, under Thatcher the rich got richer and the poor got poorer. And being poor was demonized for the first time, it was a horrible, hateful time with people turning against each other in every section of society. All down to that spiteful woman and her wicked, nasty policies. I was 24 when she came to power and 11 years later when she left office my country was a nastier, greedier, more violent place to live.

Simon Jenkins' claims are difficult to corroborate. As he writes for about three different papers at once, that isn't so surprising.

I've dug out my old copy of Hugo Young's "One of Us", which can't be considered a hagiography. Young describes Alfred Roberts as the son of a Northampton shoemaker who left school at 13. He owned a grocery shop at the time of Margaret's birth, and bought another before the war (which started when she was 13). She was born and raised in a flat over the original shop.

As Young puts it, "She used to cite as evidence for the grinding poverty of her origins the lack of both a lavatory and running hot water in the house until after the war. Although this was the norm in her part of Grantham, it cannot have been due, in the Robert's case, to a straightforward lack of money...she was reared in spartan circumstances as much because of Alfred's belief in self-denial as because he started poor...what Margaret would frequently describe in later years as the disadvantaged background from which she sprang would in fact have been more accurately described as a home of aggressive thrift."

As for her education, she went to the local primary school, then to Kesteven & Grantham Girls Grammar School. "As a grant-aided grammar school, Kesteven normally required parents to pay half the fees, but Margaret secured a county scholarship."

Interestingly, the Roberts took in a young Jewish girl who was a refugee from the Anschluss in Austria for a while in 1938. It's not recorded if she enjoyed the experience.

Interesting. I was also reacting against another post right at the beginning of this thread, which seemed to imply she wasn't an Oxbridge politician:

'Unlike the Oxbridge educated career politicians of today who are spineless and couldn't give a f@ck about the country'.

It reminded me a bit of the Monty Python advert for 'Victoria Regina', 'the inspiring tale of the simple crofter's daughter who worked her way up to become Queen of England and Empress of the Greatest Empire television has ever seen'.

Simon Jenkins' book 'Accountable to None: The Tory Nationalization of Britain' got a very favourable review from Hugo Young:

'An important book, because it brings together, with an insider's authority and anecdotage, both a narrative of domestic Thatcherism and a polemic against its pretensions...an indispensable guide to the corruptions of power and language which have sustained the illusion that Thatcherism was an attack on "government".'

You only got the opportunity to own your own house if you were already living in a council house. Huge discounts given. Anyone else had to struggle for a mortgage with high interest rates, much the same as now. Although rates lower, prices hugely inflated since then. Big struggle for first time buyers now.
