Yes, he really played on the front foot which we lacked at times tonight. He always looked to attack them.

He really lifted us when he came on. Apart from the goal we hadn’t given Luton anything to worry about and suddenly we were getting around them.

We cannot do half a season with just two strikers. A major injury leaves is with one forward in the squad. People say what about Kolli and Lloyd but they are not strikers, have very little experience and have never scored a league goal between them yet.

We need a third forward to be signed this week and I’m certain Cifuentes is of the same opinion.

I've just pointed out that last season we did just that.

And even after we signed Frey, he made just four starts and five sub appearances.

Leaving aside players who were no more adequate or experienced than Lloyd and Kolli, over the last five years or so we've hardly ever had cover in this position.

If I was Cifuentes I'd be bloody worried about it too, but it's not actually a new situation and if you accept that we sold Dykes for not much because we needed to clear his wages off the accounts then I think it's unlikely one's incoming.

Barrow at home please?

Actually Barrow away would be interesting. One of the few grounds I’ve never been to.

(Sell Chair to Leeds and it's a different situation. And I wouldn't be surprised if we did just that for exactly that reason. It sucks, but as Ive said, I'm not denying the issue of only having two strikers, I'm just saying it's a long-term problem with no easy answers.)

Small point but relevant still given we play them next- was anyone else incensed the kid who scored stayed on when he pulled back one of ours about halfway through the second half? On a yellow and commits what looked the most textbook cynical yellow you can have.

We’ve done a fair few seasons lately without a single striker worthy of the description at all

In Nourry and Marti we trust

And how have those seasons gone?
Generally if you don’t score goals then you don’t get points and 16th is the very best you can hope for.
I also think Cifuentes won’t hang around too long if he’s not backed property by the board: he’s clearly not happy about Dykes leaving judging by his recent interviews.

Joe Walsh - fcuking hell!

This is not your normal No.1 / back up goalie situation.

Looks like they'll be pushing each other all season.

He made some stunning saves and is looking increasingly comfortable every time he plays. He can't be far behind Nardi now.

Surprised its not been mentioned more. Blatant 2nd yellow. Poor ref most of the night. Morris getting free kicks any time he went down. Celar clattered several times but wasn't getting anything.

Smells like a trout farm in here

Liam Morrisson reminded me a lot of one of our ex players, promotion specialist Matthew Connolly.

I didn’t realise how much I missed him.

Went with my Forest supporting mate who was loving Walsh and Colback. Overall we held our own against a strong Luton side with two absolute units up top (hoping Adebeyo out for fri). A word on the new/fringe players:

Walsh - genuine competition for No.1 and why not, great saves and that pen down low oooh

Morrison - quietly went about his job, good on the ball and unfazed, reliable cover / future starter at CB

Santos - good in parts, pacy, thrown into the deep at RB against Doherty towards the end. I see him more of an attacking RB when chasing a game as not quite a RW and needs work positionally though great clearance at the back stick

EDB - i like the fella and his forward thinking passing but didn't really take his chance at 10 though played part in the goal

Saito - some nice touches but quiet against a physical Luton. Replaced by Lloyd who was well up for it, positively taking his man on and often successful. Looking forward to see how he develops this season as he looks hungry for it, love to see it

Celar - Often isolated against two cb's with a hopeful ball to chase, not his game. Showed some nice touches but just needs more game time and experience in this environment + his first goal, lets back our front man to come good!

Dembele - Such a difference when you have a central attacker who can beat his man and break lines, opens up so much space with defenders backtracking and runners either side. I feel this will be a good source of goals this season as well as wicked set-pieces

Pleased with many of the reserves tonight. Some looked like they might be out their depth early on but improved as the game went on.

Morrison excellent throughout as was the keeper.
Varane is going to get targeted physically a lot but despite a poor start got his act together slowly against a physical side.
Much better from Lloyd, he has to attack full backs as he did today.
Santos seems to have an engine and improved dramatically after his goal. I wouldn’t fancy him playing RB too often though.
The Japanese lad might struggle, mind doesn’t seemed tuned into Championship football.
Madson is a strange one. Can play, can pass but boy can he disappear! Somehow he can go 20 minutes without touching the ball yet still seem like he might be having an impact. Can’t get my head round what’s going on there.
Dixon Bonner was disappointing. Too static, easy to mark. It seems the same old, same old when I watch him.

The usual walk from Liverpool st worked again tonight.Although we rode our luck a bit at times, neither keeper had much to do except try and save one of the penalties, which only one managed to do.

Seems to be a lot of posts seemingly wanting Colback to be booked. The BS on Facebook about him is embarrassing.
He kicked the ball straight to a Luton player: hardly a bookable offence.

Nobody wants Colback to be booked and miss games but he asks referees to make a disciplinary decision far more often than he should, that is the point we are making.

Whilst I bow to your Match Thread expertise, surely Connell should just do the Cup run Threads?

I'm waiting for the Xmas period and end of season (just in case).

I couldn't watch the first half... but what was the deal with Saito guys? was his first game a one-trick pony or have the other players already sussed him?

Apologies if this has been talked about already but I thought it was great to see Chair in the huddle with the players before the penalties and walking round on the pitch with the players afterwards too. I know there is an argument to sell , but he’s our player and we are better with him in the team .

probably because he passed it directly to a luton player, so wasn't kicking it away at all.

Bare bones.

I don't want him to be booked but he kicked the ball away from where the bloke was about to take a quick free kick, it was stupid and he got lucky

it didn't look like that on tv. Defender was walking upto take it and he kicked it past him towards the keeper, looked like he knew what he was doing. He was very unlucky with the booking he got though as seemed to win the ball
