Oldham Athletic 1 v 0 Salford City Papa John's Trophy Tuesday, 31st August 2021 Kick-off 19:00 |
PhilT added 17:20 - Jan 6 Great game and the best “Ellerslie Rd shut†game I think I’ve been to. I was expecting to see Cameron shepherding Masterson through the game but within minutes he was pointing where Geoff should be, he looks a prospect. Chair was quality and I’m sure a few goals are coming his way - feelinging in me that says normal service will be resumed but, a great week to follow The Rangers codge added 17:17 - Jan 11 Fantastic result and well deserved, what a difference from the last time we played them and this result was just as good to put to bed there 9-0 nothing doing this on there ground.Only negative is the balls we passed to the other side especially Hojbjerg and Redmond but this was a big win for Saints, was not expected by the media.Coys. codge added 17:18 - Jan 11 Fantastic result and well deserved, what a difference from the last time we played them and this result was just as good to put to bed there 9-0 nothing doing this on there ground.Only negative is the balls we passed to the other side especially Hojbjerg and Redmond but this was a big win for Saints, was not expected by the media.Coys. I_would added 17:31 - Jan 11 Great win. Armstrong really makes the difference instead of Romeu. PEH absolutely rubbish and a liability. Redmond pointless pass it or fook off. Ward Prowse not one dead ball exactly where needed and another failed free kick. I know Leicester were poor but we kept them under the cosh, Stephens is getting better and did a good long ball. NewburySaint added 17:36 - Jan 11 Surely all 10 out of 10, even the subs-what a result & performance, especially after going 1 down-we smashed ‘em. Also fair play to ref Mason as well who is surely 1 of the most hated refs around-if I was marking him at half time I’d have given him 1 out of 10 just for turning up but he was a lot better in the 2nd. & finally a word for our “friends†from Leicester-what a bunch of w@&*ers they’ve turned into-I was quick enough to praise their support during their seasons when they avoided relegation & then won the league but they’ve gone completely the other way-well done to my fellow Saints fans their today in not rising to the provocation. SaintPaulVW added 17:54 - Jan 11 Played really well right from the start. Ings should have had a hat trick ...but don't want to be greedy. What a change in defence. Really functioning well as a unit now. Everyone is working hard, not sure I can really fault anyone. Full credit to Ralph. Shane ran his socks off and Adams makes another great assist. Things are looking up. TimSaint added 18:31 - Jan 11 Quality performance from the start to the finish. Everyone really put a shift in and did fantastically well to restrict the current 2nd best team in the country to only 5 shots all game. With a bit more luck, we could have had 4 or 5. OK Armstrong's goal had a deflection, but Ings was so unlucky to hit the bar twice in a minute at the end of the first half. That 2nd shot was a real belter. He should have also had another after putting us in front, but Schmichael saved well. VAR did it's best to spoil the game, but I guess if Long was marginally offside, then Evans was too and Ihianacho was miles off. Great to keep that VARdy quiet and Ings outgunned him - but Maddison still up for continued diving. There were a few wayward passes - hopefully MOTD2 will show Bednarek on 2Good 2Bad tomorrow night, it was THAT BAD !! :-) Superb result though - everyone deserves high praise. Here's hoping for a similar result next week, then the week after as well, as we become the first team to beat the Scousers this season ? (they are winning at Spurs as I write this) Sandyman added 20:12 - Jan 11 Never a ref as bad as Andy Haines recently, who could be, but today's official let Bolton get away with lots of pulling pushing and tugging whilst punishing Dale for similar offences. Inconsistent. Obviously not as biased towards Bolton as Radio Manchester, who could be, but he was poor. deanosfc8 added 21:09 - Jan 11 Just a shame the club only released 1200 tickets for this game, would have been so much sweeter for the players and fans with a full allocation. Geoff78 added 23:34 - Jan 11 The first half is too painful to mention and although the second was much better I'm not sure it told us anything much, except that Masterson looks ready to play regularly. Certainly better than Cameron as CB, although did face much less pressure. I wanted to say something about Wells and Hugill. Wells is much more mobile, has some pace and when the team is playing well he looks great. But he is too casual and inclined to make big mistakes. They don't get the attention of Lumley's mistakes as they usually (with one awful recent exception) lead to a missed opportunity rather than a goal conceded. Hugill can be lumbering, but battles hard and his height and strength means he can hold the ball up or provide flick ons. His height is also useful in defending corners. Wells defending cost us the first goal today. Overall Wells is probably the better player, but a front 4 off Wells, Samuel, Chair + Eze is too light weight unless we can overrun teams. Today all of our front 4 were poor except for the odd flash. Who's worried about facing Leeds? Depends entirely which team turns up - smooth, fluid, quick passing and creative team who smashed Cardiff and Swansea. Or the feeble bunch who couldn't lay a glove on Brentford for most of the first half? Why so inconsistent?
