Rangers have been locked in talks with the Argentine club over a deal for the highly-rated Colombian striker.
West Ham had previously struck a deal before pulling out earlier this summer, while other clubs from around Europe such as Italians Napoli and Sassuolo, French side Evian and Spaniards Atletico Madrid have all shown an interest in recent weeks.
However, Rangers have now managed to broker a deal for Zapata worth $10million (£6.4million).
Zapata is now due to arrive in England over the weekend to finalise personal terms and undergo a medical.
The 22-year-old, who is expected to be part of Colombia's squad for next year's World Cup finals, will then need a work-permit - which will have to go to appeal.
QPR are hopeful that Zapata will be granted the move under the 'special talent' ruling.

Zapata, nothing more QPR. And the Naples ... Article published Wednesday, August 14, 2013 at 15:19 - International Soccer, Football, Naples. duvan
Between London and Italy. The future of Duvan Zapata is to be deciphered. The Colombian striker has been training with QPR in London, but the English club had decided to give up his purchase not only for reasons related to work permit (the decision is expected by tomorrow) but because the player did not like it very Redknapp. Nor Estudiantes is convinced to transfer it to QPR. It can then skip everything. The Napoli was informed of this back and no positive impact of the player, it remains to be seen whether Bigon insist the same for him. Duvan Zapata awaits.
"did not like it very Redknapp"
Like WatfordR then?

If what Di Marzio says is true (he's so connected inside Napoli that it was his father who broke the deal to bring a certain Diego Maradona in the 80s) and the Italian club have been informed that QPR are no longer interested in Duvan because he didn't impress Redknapp in his first training session/s, then we have hit rock-bottom when it comes to giving all the power to one man and one man only.
I know managers are supposed to be entitled to their decisions and they should be the ones judging player's ability and all that...
...but is a training session (or two), with a player just arriving from an overseas flight and under a lot of pressure because he's got no idea where he is going to play his professional football, enough indication on whether he is good enough or not?
Have he seen Duvan in action? If this were true, then it'd be absolutely mental. The man is a talent. And if bringing Defoe in is also part of the reason (as some suggest here), then I'd be appalled. Re-sale value, potential, wages...
We'll be making a HUGE mistake letting him go. Especially if it's on the basis of his first training session/s.

sounds like a certain paulo wanchope deemed not good enough after scoring a hat trick against the sum in the reserves as hes quote NOT the type of striker we are looking for.
then mike the ears sheron arrived the rest is history
not sure why this is a farce, we've looked at him in training and by the sound of it having seen him first hand he's not deemed right for the championship or possibly not suited to english football and lets be honest he might not get a work permit anyway. It could be a mistake or it could be a bigger one to spend 6 million on a fella we're not sure about.
All very well slating Redknapp but whats the point in having a football manager if he's not the one who decides who he wants in his squad. We went down the road of forcing players on managers under Flavio and Paladini and that didn't work out to well. It was only when we trusted a manager that things picked up.

Are we or they (the club) just taking the p*ss out of us? They just make loud noises about how we're in for this player or that player with absolutely no intention of the deal going through

Wouldn't it be better to continue to look at him and then see if the work permit is accepted anyway?
At least then they'd know if there was even a chance of signing him.
Or maybe they don't want to do Napoli's legal work for them?

Again, I suspect that a lot of this will be down to the work permit issue as much as anything else. He doesn't seem to meet the points required. Unless there are special or extenuating circumstances - which we as sponsors want to put forward- he seems unlikely to qualify. The club could have appealed if the decision had gone against them, but that usually is along the grounds of the rules being incorrectly applied or additional material evidence which should be considered. Looking. At the rules, even if he is argued to successfully to be a special talent because he previously played football at under 20 level a few years ago, and shows he meets the financial requirements he may well be scupper end by a requirement to eak English. Hope I am wrong and that we sign him, but don't really have a great deal of confidence that a WP application allows a caseworker a great deal/any discretion in making a decision. All part of he simpler and cheaper points based system brought in a few years ago.
Never knowingly understood

might be but could be any number of reasons for it falling through, wages demands might be an issue or the player might prefer Napoli as they are in the champions league, would be a no brainer if they are his two options

Pre social media and internet we would have had absolutely no idea any of this was going on. Presumably we checked out random foreigners all the time for decades (remember Massimo Mauro?), but we were blissfuly unaware as fans. Hardly the club's fault that everyone's got access to all this information from all over the world now.
And to be fair, unlike the Parker deal they've basically said nothing about any of this. It's all come from Seb's insider knowledge and some Italian bloke on Twitter.
Could have fallen through for lots of different reasons, it's all speculation.
