Queens Park Rangers have agreed a deal with Estudiantes for striker Duvan Zapata, Sky Sports understands.
Rangers have been locked in talks with the Argentine club over a deal for the highly-rated Colombian striker.
West Ham had previously struck a deal before pulling out earlier this summer, while other clubs from around Europe such as Italians Napoli and Sassuolo, French side Evian and Spaniards Atletico Madrid have all shown an interest in recent weeks.
However, Rangers have now managed to broker a deal for Zapata worth $10million (£6.4million).
Zapata is now due to arrive in England over the weekend to finalise personal terms and undergo a medical.
The 22-year-old, who is expected to be part of Colombia's squad for next year's World Cup finals, will then need a work-permit - which will have to go to appeal.
QPR are hopeful that Zapata will be granted the move under the 'special talent' ruling.

How do we know it was just HR. He may have said to the board that he was nowhere near the finished article and it was difficult to see if he would make the grade over here, but leave it to you Philip... they may have then decided that it wasnt a sensible signing?
Alternatively, HR may have been told that, knowing that QPR had been unsuccessful in getting a WP?
It is hard to believe though, that would have been the case. Wonder who got him over here in the first place

If it was left in the hands of Phil Beard then I'm surprised we didnt actually give him a suitcase with £500k in it and tell him to give it to Napoli as an inducement to get the deal done.

If it was due to work permit, why would Redknapp say he was not interested. The safest way to play it would have been to say he wasn't getting a work permit. There wouldn't have been anything to do if that was the case and we wouldn't be thinking it was down to him as he himself said it.
We have let Redknapp manage and we got a relegation to show for. We've seen our team play worse and worse each week. No team cohesion. Key players, loved by most, sent on loan last season when they were needed here and sent on loan now to local rivals, when not sold to division rivals.
Easy to say he's letting the wrong ones leave, but who was the one keeping them and playing them week in, week out while we were going down?

This may sound stupid but how is he supposed to join Napoli if he can't obtain a WP here in England?
If you ask me, Zapata would have been a great signing and I am gutted that we couldn't get him. I also think it is bizarre that Redknapp said "he's one we will look at in 1 or 2 years time" by which point his price tag would have raised massively and we would never be able to get him especially off teams like Napoli.
However I do think people need to cut some slack on Redknapp. We have signed people like Charlie Austin who I was delighted to sign and he has wheeled and dealed brilliantly with Christopher Samba to Anzhi for 12 million after how poor he was last season. I mean, there is strong rumours that we are going to get Andros back who I would be over the moon with. I 100% agree that we need 1 more striker and I would be happy getting Defoe as a short-term signing. He would breeze through the Championship and him and Austin would be lethal. As long as Zamora don't play I am happy. But defiantly not Crouch as much as I like him he is past it now. Obviously players like Richard Dunne and Gary O'neil are nothing to shout about but we have nothing to lose with those players who are on simple 1 year contracts. I also think Danny Simpson was an excellent signing on a free. Will be a really good player for us this season.
In terms of performances I think we have got off to a great start. I was at the Huddersfield game and despite the draw I think are performance was very promising. We looked like the home team all game and we should have won the game but the fact that we were bossing the game so comfortably in itself gave me a lot of encouragement. I don't think many managers last year could have sorted that mess out and I think we just need to get behind the manager and the players. I really think we can get a top 2 finish. |  | | |

Everything seemed to be going fine and the Estudiantes big boss was seemingly delighted in having a bid wad of cash heading in his club's direction.
Then he had meetings with Napoli at the Argentina Italy game and somehow Juventus got invited to the party, potentially in some joint venture and I think Mr Big Boss started to get VERY excited (I don't want to generalise too much but The Italians haven't been squeaky clean in recent times and so who knows what was on offer at that meeting?).

Ok, as a brief recap on the work permit. Each country in the EU operates its own rules when it comes down to work permits, including for footballers. Those in the Schengen Agreement group of countries (not the uk) operate to a similar set of visa rules. We have been clear on operating our own immigration rules and tend to have different and often more restrictive rules than most other EU countries. As the Daily Fail and others ratchet up their usual xenophobia and politics shifted to the right over the past 10 years those rules have become even tighter, using points based systems.
For this guy to get a wp we would need to establish he is a special talent (usually playing at international level in high ranked country). He would have to show he has money. He would have to speak English to high level (post A level). We may get part 1, but its not a given. He will get part 2 , but currently fails on part 3 I think.
Now in other countries like Spain and Italy the barrier is set very differently and the evidence required for footballers is much lower. So why does he qualify in Italy? Simple answer is because their rules are different to ours. |  |

No. You only have to visit Greece and be black or Syrian at the moment to see all the fun of the impact of Xenophobia that New Dawn fascist party is creating. Or see what the Freedom Party has achieved in Denmark in the past 10 years. There has been a notable shift in many countries increased intolerance of foreign looking people. Now in the case of what other nations do with footballer visas, who are we to judge. Ultimately our immigration policy is determined by the historical links that we have countries from time of empire and commonwealth. For Spain and Portugal there is something similar in South America and Brazil. Italy also has some close with some countries in that part of the world, most notably Argentina, so likewise may be more favourably inclined than we might be for historical reasons. | |

Our offer was the best one. Always has been. Even after Napoli entered the conversations (Juve never in it).
What ended up happening was that Estudiantes needed cover in case the WP didn't succeed. Napoli were always happy to pay 6M USD and were asked by Estudiantes to match our bid, which they refused to.
But then they heard about Harry not wanting Zapata and now they know they are in a pole position and the leverage is all theirs: I won't give you any more than 6M USD (Estudiantes were getting more from us).
Having taken the best player out of their squad in the middle of the season (2 weeks in, Duvan scored on opening week to give them a 1-0 win), the Estudiantes president can't bring him back to Argentina and say: "Well...things didn't work out. I'm sorry that I took our best guy for a trial in a 2nd division team in England and now we don't have the money we were hoping to get and we were unable to pick him for 2 league matches and a cup tie in which we were eliminated when we would have probably reach the semifinals had we played our best striker".
Can he?

HR obviously had faith in Hitchcock.
Why take a punt for big money on this fella ? It's an unknown.
You don't know if the lad turned up for training with the wrong attitude or if the agent demanded more money. Maybe in training the attitude wasn't right for this league. The issue becomes not of HR but Beard and scouting.
