Poll: Greatest Ever Dale Game

I was one of the few who gave a positive shout out for Perkins on the Portsmouth match thread.

In that i mentioned his worth when Dale are not in possession. I love Rathbone and Cannon for their endeavour when we are not in possesion, but Perkins is very good at reading the opposite and placing himself in order to prevent opponents trying penetrative passes and thus loosing momentum.

He has his faults but I do think his talents are under appreciated at the moment.

The fact we are discussing the strengths of numerous midfielders can only be a healthy for competition.

Our goals against is the joint highest of 2 in this division.

I cannot remember, but did Perkins play in our only home league win this season?

Camps has everything to move onto the next level - for whatever reason it's not happening. At this stage of his Dale career and looking at his talent he really should be running the game from midfield - he seems to be playing within himself? There are times in games you just want him take the game by the scruff of the neck and boss the midfield but apart from the odd run, wonder pass or goal he seems on the periphery of things.

He was last night

Perkins was better last night but was playing a different role to Saturday when he was deeper. It was a diamond against Bristol R, with MJW at the base and Perkins & Rathbone left and right, Inman ahead of them. That all changed with the Gillam injury and sending off, but he still wasn’t sitting in front of the back four as much as Saturday. The issue then was his insistence to try and get away from his man with a touch, even though it’s not 2008 anymore (and that’s said a lot) and he doesn’t have that burst of pace to do it now. He cut down on this last night and was better for it.

The passing thing has been a concern since pre-season when he spent the Hull game seemingly unable to complete the most basic balls at times. Some of this is indeed because he is progressive with his choice of pass, looking forward rather than the sideways of others, it’s just that he hasn’t got it right often enough so far. Again, that’s a trait from a decade ago as we always played that way, so maybe he needs to adapt to the changes too. Talking about the midfield as a whole, it’s very strange Cannon is not afforded a consistent run of games there as, up until his injury, he was proving to be our best player in that department.

The best signing we could make in January would be the sound of silence on incomings and a reduction in the players we have at our disposal.

There is no inconsistency. I've said before, but Camps could learn a heck of a lot from watching Perkins

Camps' "risk-taking" passes are more often than not balls chipped hopefully into the air, whereas Perkins almost invariably plays direct to feet, and the passes are weighted for the recipient to take advantage rather than having to chase the ball

Not saying Camps couldn't get to that standard, i hope he does

Another canard is that Perkins isn't as good as his previous spell at Dale. We remember his exploits but forget that he didn't always play well, he was still learning at that stage and he improved further after moving on to higher things. He's older, wiser but still full of enthusiasm. The thing that's disappointed me most about Camps recently is his seeming lethargy and lack of willingness to try and grab hold of the game

so now it's not Perkins risk-taking that you're praising but rather his consistent safe passing to feet; if you want to argue for Perkins over Camps on the basis of successful passes completed, that's an excellent measure - our Performance Analyst collects those stats every match (but neither of us will ever see them); or you could admit, as I already have, that I'm prejudiced in favour of Camps and against the Perkins signing and you hold the opposite prejudice. What doesn't work is shrouding that prejudice with the sheath of objectivity!

ps enthusiasm's important, but no substitute for pace, power and mobility

If we could sign one player in January I'd want Jamie back. We might actually have a chance of playing the type of football Hill wants to play. And even if we couldn't we'd have someone who could control the tempo of the game.

Obviously never going to happen.

I thought Tuesday night was better, without really managing to come to any conclusion as to why. Assume it was the presence of MJ? Not changed my views of Rathbone and Perkins from what I said after Portsmouth. Thought it telling that we sacrifice a defender - a particular defender! - when we go down to 10 men when conventional wisdom would have it you take a forward off.

Perhaps one reason is playing through the middle at pace without a 'target man'. MJ dropped into the back 4 so we didn't sacrifice a defender and moved from 4-3-3 to 4-4-1 which helped playing on the floor.

It wasn’t 4-3-3 before the sending off, it was a 4-4-2, with the midfield 4 a diamond.

my point (that we sacrificed an attacker rather than defender) still holds
