Bristol City v Swansea City : Another departure and the very latest team news
Sunday, 9th Feb 2025 08:00 by Keith Haynes & Colin Thomas

Swansea City travel to Ashton Gate, Bristol City today for a Championship fixture and a following of over two thousand will accompany them. All the focus again will be on Luke Williams whose nine lives have reached ten this week.

The Swans go into this fixture with no wins in 2025 and in free-fall after a series of appalling results and effort as the second week of February greets us. Five losses and one draw is the story so far, three goals scored and seventeen conceded in the league and a 3-0 defeat to Southampton in the FA Cup as well. What we have seen since the Swans last victory at home to Luton Town at the end of December is a team that seems disinterred in playing for the club and players who as a collective are simply not good enough. The new football director is yet to be announced by the Swans with two men in the frame, Richard Montague and Gareth Jennings. We are very aware of course that the club have indicated that Jennings was out of the frame last month. Probably far too competent at his job, but that’s not what we are hearing now. Maybe it’s dawned on Swans Chairman, Andrew Coleman that competency is actually a good thing ?

Of course it’s common knowledge that head of recruitment, Ex Everton goalkeeper, Martin Hodge (below) potentially leaving the club, so that’s two football recruitment positions available. As it stands Richard Montague is in pole position for a director of football slot, and probably goes a long way to explaining Luke Williams continued involvement at Swansea City.

Background here ⚽️ Richard Montague

Today it seems that Luke Williams will give a debut to Lewis O’Brien, he has in other incarnations and will add steel to the Swans midfield. To get him to Swansea involved one key area, cash. Joe Allen (below) is out for a few weeks with an ankle issues. Ollie Cooper and Josh Ginnelly are available these two are being managed carefully since their lengthy injuries. The same applies to Sam Parker. This game is the last one Harry Darling will serve as a part of his three match suspension and he is available for selection come Wednesday evening v Sheffield Wednesday (7:45pm) at the Swansea.com.

The issues for the Swans are the loss of form for Eom and Ronald, the inability and ineffectiveness of Vipotnik and Bianchini in front of goal and the reliance on Liam Cullen whose goals have dried up of late - and that screams of urgent attention. The once lively ‘wing backs’ of last season, Josh Key and Josh Tymon are most certainly off the boil which pretty much leaves a team under performing and obviously in need of surgery. The transfer window that has just closed presented no real hope for this season. All the talk at the start slowly became obvious nonsense towards the end within a completely incompetent structure of employees devoid of professional responsibilities.

Let’s just say it how it is.

We covered Luke Williams press conference on Friday and didn’t pussy foot around when delving deeper into his claims. We have no agenda other than reporting to the many thousands who come here every day the facts. That’s our goal, nothing more. And we source our material from reliable sources, registered to us and very helpful.

Luke Williams ⚽️ Luke lashes out

Bristol City have two players suspended today after their red cards last weekend, Joe Williams and Ross McCrorie were both sent off leaving Robins boss, Liam Manning with a few headaches. Speaking on Williams departure Manning stated. "I've seen it back, a few years ago it's not being given because it's minimal contact, but he's off the ground so it's one of those. Ultimately, he half gives the referee the opportunity by being off of the ground but for me, it looked like minimal contact."

Whatever Manning believes he is two down on his selections today with his side looking to extend an unbeaten run. But there’s always room for complaints. "It's a tough week, the scheduling's horrific. When you look at it, I think it's terrible. We talk a lot about the integrity of the competition but when you look at the organisation and the timings to go Sunday, Wednesday night and early on a Saturday, it's just madness. It is what it is, it's one that we have to deal with and again you need the options, you need the depth and I think we've shown before, turning around quickly in games is a strength of ours. We can bounce from Sunday into Wednesday quite well. We'll need everybody to be fresh to be in a good spot and ready to contribute."

The Robins squad apart from the two dismissals have just one player, Cam Pring out for the game today. They have only lost one game this year away at Coventry in mid January. In fact one loss in their last nine games. A few draws in there but a return that does see them just three points off the play offs, and a win today will see them into sixth place in the promotion picture. Plenty of incentive there.

Some Swans fans will remember Korey Smith, he played for the Swans and Bristol City. Here he is scoring the winner against Manchester United for the Robins in 2017 in the League Cup.

Korey now thirty four is currently a first team regular at Cambridge United, the head coach there is one Garry Monk.

The game is a midday kick off and we will have Liam Walters at the stadium reporting on the game. LIVE coverage is on Sky Sports Main Event. Exclusive (licensed) pictures from Reuters, stats, teams and ratings will follow this afternoon. Thanks for supporting the Indy and the Brain Tumour Charity.
