Swansea City & Richard Montague : So many links but the answer still evades us …
Friday, 7th Feb 2025 08:00 by Liam Walters & Keith Haynes

With a lot of speculation flying around regards the new director of football / director or whatever the appointment will be we decided with one of our researchers to grab the bull by the horns and ask some direct questions.

It isn’t hard to dial a number and ask a question, but when a certain question is asked and the initial reply is ‘I don’t know’ we will call you back then a slight nudge in the back is felt. We posted on our Twitter (X) feed the fact we had called the PA at Notts County and posed a question. That question was ‘Can you assist with the rumour that your football director, Richard Montague (again whatever his exact term is, he has several) is joining Swansea in March” ?

Where we got March from who can say ?

The response was ‘I don’t know’ we will call you back. We were quite open about who we were and the club seemed accommodating. When we next had dialogue the response was a clear ‘No’. We pointed out the amount of social media and internet comment that was building and suggested maybe for the benefit of fans of birth clubs a form of announcement should be made ? There was what could only be described as an ‘oh’ We will get back to you. Yes, of course as some have suggested if a club did that they would be denying things most days. However, this wasn’t the tactic, it was of course to get Richard Montague aware of the increased speculation regards his position at Notts County. At no point did we expect that to happen, but maybe …

It could force his hand, possibly either to say yes or no, with the pressure on and people asking questions he is well aware he has to tread carefully. If this link was incorrect and you were dedicated to a role at your workplace, what would you do ?

Here’s something from the Notts County forum, Footy Mad. Quite astute.

All this depended on the validity of this link with Montague. What we do know is he is active and to an extent has his admirers in a position the Swans are screaming out for. Some say he is just an employee of the owners of Notts County, and he has no money to invest. Others are a bit wiser. The reason why we say ‘Invest’ is he is in an executive position and knows Andrew Coleman. We don’t believe it’s a joint thing, but just asked the question, but you know what Twitter is like. Assumes everything even if you don’t say it …

Interestingly Notts County make their financial declarations in March 2025, so it could be he is finishing up or it’s just a coincidence. What we do know is Richard Montague has been in Swansea recently on a few occasions. Could be for anything. Meeting up with Luke Williams, offering a new analytical tool called Football Radar, it really could be as simple as that. People see things and make assumptions, but then if you saw Richard Montague how would you know it was him ? We do use tactics which often lead to the answers we all crave, that’s well proven, sometimes these tactics are a bit ruthless. But that’s only when we aren’t being source led, their anonymity is crucial. However, on this occasion we saw nothing wrong in saying, want to know something ? Then make a phone call ! Sometimes journalism is as easy as that.

But we are sneaky mind. So be careful, identification, research and then utilising sources is our is our strongest tool. Montague has a bachelors first class degree in American studies (oooh hang on) and also works for Football Radar (as mentioned above) utilising his analytical skills which also assists him in his role at Notts County. Employed by Danish brothers Christoffer and Alexander Reedtz who appointed him at the Magpies in 2019, around the time they took charge of Notts County. They also own Football Radar. See, it’s all coming round full circle.

Maybe.

We have the links and there are many, Andrew Coleman has known Montague for around sixteen months and quite obviously did a lot of work on recruiting Luke Williams to Swansea. It’s all coincidental, and no we don’t believe Montague brings exceptional investment to the Swans. He has to compete in the many millions to do that and we are assured he doesn’t have that type of cash. So, as an employee of the Reedtz brothers at Notts County and at Football Radar the move is far simpler, you would think. This March thing keeps cropping up and whether or not it’s Montague the evidence to link him is there and there’s a lot of it.

Could we throw something in the mix ? Andrew Coleman needs Luke Williams at the club for this to go through surely ? But … it can’t be the reason why Luke is still in a job as the Swans fall further down the league ? That wouldn’t happen, would it ? We’ve asked you our readers a lot of questions this morning, and we can use the balance of probability to suggest Richard Montague is Andrew Coleman’s man. We don’t have a definitive answer, but then nobody does. There are people who clearly know though. After this recent transfer window we all know you can get a person to Swansea, and you can be a fingertip away from securing their services, but of course that’s just half of the story.

Nobody has the monopoly on good ideas, we thought the move by our new researcher yesterday was pretty good. And as is our motto, and always will be. ‘You can only live your life forward and understand it in reverse’
