Is this what leavers voted for?

"EU citizens living in this country will have their rights fully protected, and the same goes for British citizens living in the EU.
"British people will still be able to go and work in the EU; to live; to travel; to study; to buy homes and to settle down. As the German equivalent of the CBI - the BDI - has very sensibly reminded us, there will continue to be free trade, and access to the single market.
"The only change - and it will not come in any great rush - is that the UK will extricate itself from the EU's extraordinary and opaque system of legislation: the vast and growing corpus of law enacted by a European Court of Justice from which there can be no appeal."

Not sure why that's a bonus - we had already negotiated that right.

As for overall negotiation - Oliver Letwin apparently. Good news for everyone that wants a fairer system

Ah no - I didn't remember it.

I can't believe anyone would put Letwin in charge of negotiating the purchase of apples from the market, but there we go.

He's undoubtedly a 'brain' but has the social conscience of an alleycat.

If Britain can negotiate that why not, that would be the aim as far as I am concerned.

Prior to joining, European people worked and lived in other European Countries including British, European Countries currently outside the EU also have the same opportunity now, people outside Europe have the opportunity to work in Europe.

The only question is what can be negotiated and for that we need someone strong to do the negotiation.

The bonus would be that Britain can remove someone who is not contributing. The same goes for the EU countries, if someone is taking and not contributing Britain should have the ability to remove that person.

Well, it may make you thick

I don't get the whole "immigrants coming over here and bleeding the state dry" argument. Study after study shows that , AFAIK, every single group of foreign nationals that come to the UK contribute positively to the economy. The myth that there are armies of people coming over here just to seek benefits is just that. Clearly this was the decisive argument (well, that and Muslims) in the referendum, and it is to the eternal shame of the Remain camp that they failed to make the Positive case for the free trade and freedom of movement within the EU.

To be honest he has flown so low under the radar in recent years you could forgive most of us for supposing he'd moved on from politics to pastures new.

We're in an awful, awful mess.

He does a lot of the strategy work for the Conservative party behind the scenes. Most of the extreme right wing policies that are hated and withdrawn are Letwin.

Doesn't believe in the NHS, utter belief in the free market, no social conscience, my suggestion over the past weeks that we are about to lurch to the right was potentially understated.

Still, at least those gits at the Polish Cultural Centre round the corner from me got what was coming to them eh?

There's a big difference between movement of people within the EU/Schengen area and from outside. What happened before we joined is largely irrelevant as the political landscape has changed so much. Non-EU citizens have a right faff working here - expensive, restrictive visas, strict rules on whether and how family can join, etc. There's been quite a shift in policy under this government that is splitting families and making it more difficult, restricting numbers of foreign students (vitally needed as the Uni sector is underfunded), etc.

What Boris doesn't say is how easy or difficult any of this will be. He's just using generalist statements that give him a lot of wiggle room down the line.

Besides the EU have said no negotiations until we officially give notice to leave. If we leave and then go back and arrange a Norway style deal to allow free movement and access to the single market, we've just given away all our influence for no reduction in contribution or reduction in immigration. So a lot of people who voted out will be very, very unhappy. It could turn nasty.

Sorry but that is nonsense.

It was the UK that stopped the EU from raising tariffs on Chinese steel anyway.
