Peterborough United : You probably knew this ?

Clubs like Peterborough United are the type of club that hides itself away from the glare of the world media, not that it means to, it just isn’t fashionable to report on them. Radio chatter Adrian Durham pipes up now and again about them. Some will recall Barry Fry who is the clubs director of football, at seventy six he has decades of posh links.

Did you know he was an apprentice at Manchester United ? Here’s some other stuff for your edification.

1. Peterborough United are nicknamed "The Posh", after Pat Tirrell, manager of Fletton United, was reported to say he was "Looking for posh players for a posh new team."

2. Victoria Beckham field a claim to the UK Patent Office over Peterborough’s nickname, The Posh, claiming the word ‘posh’ was ‘synonymous with her worldwide image.’

3. Striker Adil Nabi became the first British based player to be transferred to the Indian Premier League when West Bromwich Albion loaned him to Delhi Dynamos.

4. They won the EFL Trophy in 2014, beating Chesterfield 3-1 at Wembley.

5. In the 2010-11 season, Peterborough conceded 75 goals in their 46 matches, more than any other club in the division — but still finished 4th and gained promotion via the play-offs.

6. That same season, the Posh scored 106 goals, more than any other club in the top four divisions.

7. The £8m fee received for Britt Assombalonga in 2014 from Nottingham Forest is the highest they’ve ever received for a player.

8. The Posh spent seven seasons in the 3rd Division in 1960 before being relegated, being deducted 19 points for illegal payments to players, a record which stood until Luton lost 30 points in one season eight years ago

9. The Posh reached the quarter final of the FA Cup in 1965, beating Swansea and Arsenal on the way, before losing out to Chelsea.

10. Cambridge United are considered the clubs main rivals, but Northampton Town do claim to also be their rivals.

The posh have also received in the region of seventeen million pounds in recent times.

1. Ivan Toney 5.4 million. Brentford
2. Dwight Gayle. 5 million. Crystal Palace
3. Ryan Bennett 3.5 million. Norwich City
4. Jack Marriott 3.1 million. Derby County
5. Conor Washington 3 million. QPR

Other noticeable transfers are Matt Godden to Coventry and Siriki Dembele to AFC Bournemouth. Swans fan Simon Davies went to Spurs for a million way back in 2000, and some will remember Matthew Etherington going the same way around the same time. Tom Williams who once played for the swans went to Birmingham from Peterborough for half a million around 2002. The most bizarre transfer has to be goalkeeper Luke Steele who at sixteen years of age went to Manchester United for seven hundred thousand pounds. The initial fee was around half a million then appearances would kick in. He never did play for the Red Devil’s but went on to play for Bristol City, Panathinaikos, Barnsley, Forest ( no games ) Notts County Millwall and Coventry to name a few. Now thirty seven he has played seven games in the last five years. We understand he now plays for Deeping. Luke played 392 games in total in a twenty one year career.

Luke Steele once a teenage sensation at Manchester United

There we go, we hope you enjoyed that as much as we enjoyed utilising that good old great journalistic standard of research, investigation and general poking around.

The Swans fall to the usual mishaps, but it isn’t all bad
It wasn’t all bad at Bramall Lane tonight, like West Bromwich Albion the Swans rode their luck, and it was only two errors which lost the game. Unfortunately they were the same errors that continue to impact on games, and indeed give the game away due to a total lack of awareness and game management.

There is an adage that states every game in the Championship is a hard game. However, there are certain fixtures which look extremely difficult, and some would say borderline impossible. Sheffield United away in midweek ticks that box.
Swansea City put forward a project plan to play in the Welsh cup (part 2)
This evening the top story is Welsh clubs want to play in Europe via the Welsh League Cup ? There’s no cake and eating it here, is this another route to being rejected by the Football Association in England as it’s a yearly invite. Would the football league vote against this move, and ask for Welsh clubs to be expelled, if it is agreed ?
