Energy bills 23:01 - Aug 24 with 48302 viewsHayesender

Watching the news earlier, they were talking about the impact these energy bill rises will have on small businesses.

It got me thinking (dangerous I know) about the potential effect it could have on our club, and other clubs of similar and smaller size?

Not only the day to day running costs and matchday costs, but also the affect its gonna have on attendances.

Obviously when it comes down to heating, eating, mortgage, rent etc, days out with mates and family watching football, or any sporting event, are gonna have to take a back seat for many people.

Unless the government (lol) take action now, its gonna be a bleak winter for many people and businesses, and I fear for people's mental well being

Glenn,

I believe that regarding your direct debit payments that you are in control of them regarding your energy bills. As long as you are paying monthly, ie not defaulting, you should be ok. Surely, they cannot enforce an increased payment?

I mentioned earlier on this thread that my energy company whacked my d/d up by a fortune. I told them that I wasn’t having it, but would pay an agreed increase that I could afford, which they agreed to.

Feck them.

I did similar, they sent me an email telling me that it was going to rise but I was able to log into my account and lower it to something more reasonable without even needing to call them.

I'm with Shell Energy and they seemed to be overestimating to cover future rises that haven't happened yet (is it Feb the cap was due to rise again?) which takes the p a bit.

Same with me. I’m with OVO energy. Got an email about a month ago asking me to increase my DD. Kept it the same and asked them to justify it and have not heard anything from them since.

Similar here, Jim.

Put our d/d up.

We are currently in credit.

Government credit coming through in October. Told them politely via email to stick it on our financial terms. Feck all they can do. As I mentioned, we are lucky to be able to do so. Horrible times for those that can’t.

Did I ever mention that I was in Minder?

Yeah I doubt they could justify it. I have a suspicion that they try it on in the expectation that most will agree to a rise somewhere in between nearer the actual increase. Some, possibly less aware or with other more pressing issues to deal with, will probably end up paying more than they should.

It's the same with insurance renewals, always go up then if you do a comparison they'll match a lower price but enough people auto-renew and they get a nice healthy profit off them. It annoys me because it takes advantage of people who assume their loyalty is being rewarded or have other things going on.

Energy bills are not easy to read or understand. Even the new Energy Secretary Rees-Mogg does not understand the difference between a megawatt and a megawatt hour.

Gas bills are especially difficult because meters read in cubic metres or cubic feet and you have to apply the calorific value of the gas (which varies) in order to calculate how much you are paying per kWh or "unit".

Add in the daily "standing charge" and most consumers don't have a clue how their gas and electricity suppliers are charging them.

Fortunately, I began paying more than my gas d/d required decades ago. Last time I looked I think I owned the company

I have been having a row with EON over their attempts to hike my monthly direct debit from £200 to £345. My account is in credit and it's not even cold yet. They said I could log in to my account and adjust it down, but of course they'll only let you do it by £10 or something. And, remarkably, the DD was then magicked UP to £371.

So - long story short - and I could only do this by protracted email correspondence - I told them I was refusing to lend EON money at zero interest, and they've put me on something called a variable payment schedule, which means I pay in arrears for what I've used. In other words, the same system that we all used to pay by in the days before privatisation.

This means I can keep my money in a savings account, earning interest, until I pay my energy bill, rather than lending it to EON interest-free. They assure me that I won't be punished by being taken off the DD tariff that I'm on, but I'll keep a lookout for that.

I appreciate this isn't for everyone, but it is available if you make enough of a fuss.

I got the obligatory email from mine a month or so back - to comply with our prices we're upping your DD from £130 to £230 a month. Also currently in credit. The got another email from them three days later saying I'd used less gas than they expected so they were refunding £30 to me account.

Racket.

If this is a question about wind energy, the problem has never come up. We have always had wind as a country with a maritime climate. Even the on our calmest days.

The problem with 100% wind is energy storage and high demand times.

That’s why we need to compliment wind with solar and tidal energy.

And yes, solar still works when it’s cloudy.

Hydrogen, maybe? Produced with spare electricity from wind and solar, and then used to run power stations to produce electricity on demand.

My energy company has introduced an additional factor to compensate for increases in excess of 9.3% offset against the energy price cap, calculated on a monthly basis but added on a weekly basis a fortnight in arrears.

I have no idea how these companies work out payments.

I was paying £266 and with the Energy Bills Support Scheme i get £66, however, EON have advised me my payment will be reduced to £240?

On top of that i'm also £634 in credit so haven't got a scooby what's going on.

My account was also in abnormally high credit so I got a refund, got a smart meter installed, and now pay the exact amount in arrears through the app. Seems fairer than the previous arrangement.

Gone up to £230 a month, just for leccy.
Bought some LPG bottles for today - £70 for the 46Kg hot water boiler and 2x £35 for the 18Kg ones which will do the cooker.Should last for most of a year.
We've been having a dispute with Scottish Power for compensation for 2 leccy posts which are devaluating property worth. We settled on a figure but they've been f*cking us about with legalese the last five years so we've told them unless they come up with the amount soon we're going to take a chainsaw to them and they can come and shove the remains up their arses - sideways.

My local council has published a small list of places where people who are struggling can stay during the day to keep warm in the coming months. My congratulations go to the government for keeping this country at the cutting edge.

I’ve got a smart meter at work that was installed by SSE in 2012. It hasn’t been able to send them readings in years. I had a bloke come round once from Morrisons Data Services who said he was installing a new battery that was supposed to fix it. I’m not sure if he actually did anything as it still doesn’t send them readings. I started submitting my own readings through their online business account portal after they overcharged me but I had a letter through the post from them last week saying that my latest report had not worked and that in future I have to send them my readings by email.

I mean they’re making all this money and they can’t have a working meter reading system? Either they’re completely incompetent or crooks. Both maybe.
