Rangers have been locked in talks with the Argentine club over a deal for the highly-rated Colombian striker.
West Ham had previously struck a deal before pulling out earlier this summer, while other clubs from around Europe such as Italians Napoli and Sassuolo, French side Evian and Spaniards Atletico Madrid have all shown an interest in recent weeks.
However, Rangers have now managed to broker a deal for Zapata worth $10million (£6.4million).
Zapata is now due to arrive in England over the weekend to finalise personal terms and undergo a medical.
The 22-year-old, who is expected to be part of Colombia's squad for next year's World Cup finals, will then need a work-permit - which will have to go to appeal.
QPR are hopeful that Zapata will be granted the move under the 'special talent' ruling.

Because there isn't an U21 Colombian national team. Around here, we only have U20s. And he was part of the setup for that team (he scored 1 goal in 3 matches at the Youth World Cup). And he also played (and won) the Toulon Youth Championship in 2011.
The only reason he is not a full Colombian international is this:
Radamel Falcao Teo Gutierrez Jackson Martinez Carlos Bacca Luis Muriel Dorlan Pabon Carlos Quintero
Not to mention other attacking options from midfield such as James Rodriguez, Juan Fernando Quintero, Macnelly Torres or even Giovani Moreno.
Competition for places in Colombia right now is BRUTAL.
Don't know if that can be used as an explanation ahead of whoever decides whether he deserves a work permit or not, but in my opinion, that's the only reason standing between Duvan and regular international football.
Yeah, but apart from that??????????????
Dont know why we bother. .... but we do!

Such cynicism. The thing is that those teams don't often need to trawl around the bargain basement of unknown talent that is just bubbling under. They can pretty much afford to buy whoever they want, usually full internationals from reasonably high ranked countries. So the sort of questions we need to respond to are probably less relevant to them.
Never knowingly understood

Surely it could be possible to get a permit if ManUre managed one for the young Uruguayan fullback Varela (unless he has some tenuous European connection somehow). Maybe Harry should ask for some help from ManUre getting the permit in return for us improving Fabio so much last year

Here's what one of my sources close to Estudiantes tells me (and I'm not Sky Sports. I really have sources there! haha!)
After the West Ham possibility died down (some say it was because of a work permit, some say it was because they weren't paying up front, truth is it never got to a point in which a medical happened), QPR have been in pole position. Offer accepted, deal sorted, medical passed, the whole lot.
Sassuolo were interested, but again, paying in several installments, so Estudiantes chose QPR.
A few days later (because this Duvan-to-QPR has been doing the rounds for a solid 10-15 days around here but only hit the UK media 5-7 days after), Napoli made an offer. QPR had the offer accepted at 8M (I think it was 8M USD, not pounds, but I may have that figure wrong), whilst Napoli only bid 5.
Estudiantes said: "Give me 6 and he's yours." in a bid to have a Plan B in case Duvan's WP fails. Napoli said "OK", but Estudiantes then may have heard things were fine with Duvan and QPR so they played hard ball with Napoli and told them: "Now we want 8M". To which Napoli (and rightly so) told them to "va fanculo".
But today, with Estudiantes' president in Rome (Argentina play Italy tomorrow there), a contact with Napoli was renewed and there were meeting there.
My source tells me: "If they reach an agreement, they fly him from London to Napoli in a heart-beat and he's off to play over there. Make no mistake".
I guess we will have to wait and see if they do reach a deal with Napoli and then Napoli with Duvan. And then, if that doesn't happen, see if the WP is granted.
I always had my doubts on this deal actually happening, but I was stupid enough to get my hopes really high that I'll be devastated if it doesn't happen.
Several names were thrown on the table after they signed Higuain. They mentioned there was a move to get Eto'o (who is now linked with Chelsea) and there is also another Colombian striker (Jackson Martinez) from Porto.
But if those two don't join them, I'm afraid they'll go in for Duvan.

Following from where I left (Napoli and Estudiantes meeting in Rome), my source now tells me:
- Estudiantes asked for Napoli to improve their offer and Duvan was theirs.
- Estudiantes then went with the news to Duvan's agent and the man told him he's not moving Duvan from London because he wants him to play for QPR.
- Napoli can't believe this.
- Estudiantes and Napoli will now wait to see what happens with the work permit application.
It all depends on that, it seems.
I think the fact that Napoli would probably be looking to register him 50-50% with another Italian club and possibly sent him out on loan, could be having an impact in Duvan's agent's mind. That and a possible interesting fee to the agent we are not so famous for paying!
I'm starting to lose sleep over this.

Chaos Zapata! Positive summit Estudiantes-Naples, but the agent wants QPR. It appears a pre-contract Sassuolo ... 14/08/2013 12:30 Drafting All Napoli.net Twitter: @ tuttonapoli article read 6875 times
A story of the market to say the least intricate destined to stay with us for a few days. A real South American telenovela-style, which starts from Colombia and arrives to Argentina where there is Estudiantes club that holds the tag Duvan Zapata, target market club blue.
Also thanks to Argentine sources we try to reconstruct a story more and more tangled. We start from the meeting, that there was between Maurizio Micheli and Oscar Cassata, vice-president of the Argentine club. The meeting was positive, the Estudiantes asked eight million dollars (six million dollars) to give the player. The agreement can be reached, but at this time we must rely with different variables.
First the QPR, the club with which he has been training these days Duvan Zapata. The player at the moment is in London with his agent Fernando Schena, who is pushing for an agreement with the English club and is a total break with intermediaries which, however, are also working on the slopes Italian. By Friday will arrive on the response of the British Federation work permit. The feelings are negative, but sources close to the footballer are sure that eventually the permission will come.
Within 48 hours, then, you will know something more. In the meantime - as if that were not enough chaos that it has created - is (re) popped out even Sassuolo, the first Italian clubs interested in the player. The company neroverde came back strongly in the course with a pre-contract signed by the player himself and calls Emilian Zapata accept the destination if it does not get a work permit to play for QPR.
For Zapata are decisive days. The negotiations are moving forward in full South American style. Are not excluded new twists ...

Why? TF et al can push the fact they could dominate the league with zapata as a featured striker. At Napoli he would ride pine. Ditto for Scotty Parker he wont play at Fulham. In fact I doubt Adel does much. Fullham's midfield is staunch.

Filed: Wednesday, 14th August 2013 By: Staff Writer West Ham co-owner David Sullivan has revealed why West Ham pulled out of the hunt to sign Columbian forward Duvan Zapata.
West Ham had hoped to sign the 22-year-old Estudiantes forward last month but the deal collapsed after it was revealed that Zapata was unlikely to gain to gain a work permit as a result of never having played international football.
Sullivan, speaking exclusively to KUMB.com ahead of the new season said: "We nearly signed a striker who may end up at Queens Park Rangers, but we didn't think we could get a work permit.
"He's not played a single international and our problem is that we couldn't wait a month so see if we could get a work permit, as we need players now.
"There is a small chance he could get a work permit, but it's very difficult for a 22-year-old. He's not 18, he's 22 without a single full international and it's hard to see how you could bring him under the special talent rule.
"There's two fantastic players ahead of him [in the national team]. But it all just went on too long and Sam wanted to use the money elsewhere."
Sullivan, who was talking to KUMB.com in an exclusive Q&A - more of which we'll bring you later - also revealed that West Ham are unlikely to make any further new signings until some players have been sold due to the wage cap imposed by the new FFP rules.

A Radio Crc, during the program "It swells the network" has intervened Venerable Cyrus, RAI journalist and expert on transfers
"Napoli take Matri. By now the phones between the two teams are hot. The official will come in the next few days. The deal is done at 99%. Zapata, however, by tomorrow it will be a player in the QPR. The story Cannavaro depends very much that we will encounter in the next few days between Naples and his attorney. The parties will sit down and try to heal the bitterness, and I think that in the end an agreement will be found without too much trouble. For the defense complicated I see the arrival of Branches: De Laurentiis does not buy players who have already refused Naples once. I believe more in the track Astori. Donadel, Dossena, Calaiò Novothny leave Naples, Gamberini instead waits for Genoa, but it is a deal that could be done only after mid-August. If Alexander wants to stay, Benitez if he keeps it, otherwise you will find a solution. "

Zapata, nothing more QPR. And the Naples ... Article published Wednesday, August 14, 2013 at 15:19 - International Soccer, Football, Naples. duvan
Between London and Italy. The future of Duvan Zapata is to be deciphered. The Colombian striker has been training with QPR in London, but the English club had decided to give up his purchase not only for reasons related to work permit (the decision is expected by tomorrow) but because the player did not like it very Redknapp. Nor Estudiantes is convinced to transfer it to QPR. It can then skip everything. The Napoli was informed of this back and no positive impact of the player, it remains to be seen whether Bigon insist the same for him. Duvan Zapata awaits.
