Signings & The DOF 21:41 - Oct 5 with 13517 views | 1JD | I didn’t rate Les as a DOF, but some of the squads and business he put together look next level compared to the squad assembled this summer. From what I am witnessing, the squad, and certain individual players who cost a lot of money, look woefully undercooked for the level. I guess the question is, Is this a result of exclusively using data to scout players in tier 2 and tier 3 European leagues. Ie. You might look a superstar in THAT league, but does it translate to THIS league? Or do you simply stand out and look good in stats, BECAUSE the level is bang average? The lack of ball control of some of these players, and the constant turning over of possession, let alone the complete absence of any kind of athleticism and physicality is not solved through game time in my eyes. These are basic tenets of the level. And we are nowhere near the level. Once again, as it was under Les, especially in the earlier years, it seems we are under the leadership of a DOF “learning on the job”. I hope we sort ourselves out, but I’m now seriously concerned this is a going to be a mistake too far. [Post edited 5 Oct 22:37]

Even from the Fans Forum, it came across as a joint decision with Belk, Cifuentes (+ Calm?) and Nourry. Possibly a couple of others. The intention to reduce the age profile by recruiting from the cheaper European market was sound enough. No club gets all recruitment decisions correct. Sure, we can read all sorts into it and the reaction is down to poor performances. Add JCS, Colback and Chair the whole team looks stronger. Hopefully, results follow. Then this type of discussion fades away.

Signings & The DOF on 09:59 - Oct 7 by Padulas_Shampoo | It's actually what we've clambered for on the whole for some time... The opposite to 'what the manager wants, the manager gets' that leaves you with Leon Balogun playing for Gareth Ainsworth 6 months later. Without wanting to witch hunt though, as I'm sure the data-driven approach to recruitment has a lot of nuance... The one constant in that approach to recruitment has been Andy Belk and his model appears to have identified the likes of Ariel Borysiuk, Yeni Ngbakoto, Pawel Wszolek, David Wheeler, Idrissa Sylla, Seb Polter, George Thomas, Toni Leistner, Andre Dozzell, Charlie Kelman, Taylor Richards, Ziyad Larkeche, Reggie Cannon and now Varane, Madsen and Celar. At what point do you chalk this up to the right idea but poor execution? We're getting even further into bed with this model, even going so far as to completely build our strategy around it? If so, our ability to identify good investments that offer a good product and a financial return is completely paramount. In fairness it's also presumably brought us Dickie, Dembele, Chery, BOS, Willock, Field, Paal and Nardi but that strike rate, along with quite how wide some of the misses on that list were is very worrying. If we'd have handed over the keys to Belk 4/5 years ago and not signed the gap-filling - presumably manager-led - signings such as Barbet, Begovic, Andersen, Colback, Cook, Johansen, Austin etc. not to mention the Eze and Chair lightning strikes we surely would have been relegated by now. |
always a balance to these things, we go from one extreme to the other with the same results. I do think more attention should be on Andy Belk, he's made some horrific signings over the years [Post edited 7 Oct 14:50]

It’s always a joint decision when that person is the only one rolled out in front of the cameras isn’t it? Take Nourry with a very big pinch of salt. Same goes for all leaders for the simple reason it’s only their version of truth that you will hear. For a more accurate representation of events, it’s wise to canvas opinion of a wider audience

You could well be right that it’s a joint decision. But what doesn’t make sense to me is MC accepting that physicality and experience was what was going to keep us up last season, reacted by moving Dunne to right back and signing Hayden Andersen and Frey and tightening up those defensive areas ……..and then come the summer he would chuck that all in the bin and demand small or light weight or both , type footballers with no experience at all at this level. That does just doesn’t make sense. There is zero continuity there which is baffling ..unless …he didn’t have much of a say . If he did , then he’s lost the plot . Which I don’t believe . He looks annoyed and angry and has done since the summer in my opinion. Something ,and I have no idea what,is not right . And with the club telling us nothing about nothing, these ideas and connotations will only fester and grow .

MC looks angry and annoyed because we are not playing well and keep losing! I'd be more worried if he looked happy and laughing after some of these performances.
Signings & The DOF on 07:19 - Oct 8 with 1460 views | dmm | I'm late to this thread, and have just read through it. There are both worrying theories and sensible explanations made on why we're having a crap season so far. What's going on behind the scenes will remain a mystery for a good while yet. But I get the thinking behind most comments yet I can't help wonder if the problems we're seeing on the pitch are essentially down to Marti not getting it right. He said this in his post match interview: We’ve signed a profile of player to play a certain style of football and we need to be better at playing it - when games get more physical, we need to be better at getting the ball on the ground and finding solutions. We need to play the football that we want to. Of course, what he says in these interviews will not be the full truth but still, Marti strikes me as a football purist at heart. The above comment underlines that. He became more of a pragmatist last season and may have to do so again. So far this season his philosophy is being beaten up by Championship football.

Signings & The DOF on 11:01 - Oct 7 by BrianMcCarthy | I'm not hostile to Nourry, and it's too early to know whether he'll fail or not. I am wary, though. He has no experience. None. Thanks for the article, I like that phrase 'dance for space'. I didn't use it, but I will! |
My pleasure. If 'idiotic', 'deceitful' and whatever else aren't 'hostile', though, I'd hate to see how you treat your enemies. Let's call it (super) 'wary' if you prefer.

Let's not forget 'insulting' as one of the possibilities I mentioned. I can think any of those things as possiblilites without being hostile, and that's where I stand right now. I may change my mind, and Nourry may go on to be a tremendous success and hopefully he does. I'm happy with super wary in the meantime, though.

A tricoteuse was one of (many) women who gathered at the guillotines in Paris during the French Revolution and were infamous for knitting as the aristos in their carts were brought to their decapitation.
