Dunne off? on 10:51 - Jan 31 by GaryBannister86 | You are of course right, Dave, but it is tough to take when he has been so important to us. But we have to put our big boy pants on, and realise that if in fact he did sign a new contract with us his form would soon disappear / leg explode etc. A real test of the club and the plan, this. |
A year ago we were desperatly trying to get him out the door so things do change quickly. I hope he stays but £2millon is daft money for a player out of contract this summer

Dunne off? on 11:17 - Jan 31 by loftus77 | Yes - this. I was getting my hopes up when Sheff Utd signed Harry Clarke - but even I underestimate the obscene advantage that parachute payments bring. If Jimmy does go, there is a sudden vacuum at the club - yes we have Steve Cook back, but Jimmy was particularly talismanic in recent times - from THAT Brum goal onwards. Hopefully, we absorb this - but the gap to 22nd place suddenly feels a lot more relevant than the admittedly smaller gap to 6th right now. |
".....the obscene advantage that parachute payments bring" ^ This. Baiscally those with parachute payments can throw money around like confetti (JD won't get anywhere near a Prem game if they get promoted, and it's even questionable that he'll play much for them in the Champ, so the reality is they're largely just chucking away £2m plus significant wages) whilst the rest beg, steal and borrow. The money ruined the top division long ago. It's now close to ruining division 2. [Post edited 31 Jan 12:00]

Dunne off? on 11:34 - Jan 31 by wombat | maybe this windows plan was loook to sell clark salter but that deal wasnt going to happen due to his long standing relationship with the treatment table so with no sales coming in dunne is the sellable option this window. |
Well he's out of contract, if somebody's offering £2m you probably have to do that. The question is was he always minded not to sign here. He's 27, running out of chances for a big move and big deal, we know our limitations, was he always eyeing this free transfer and there's not a lot we could do other than offer and hope? I.e. Ryan Manning situation. Or was he quite happy to stay, and would have signed at multiple points over the last few years, but we've pisballed about with it and are only now belatedly trying to get him to sign when he's in red hot form and getting interest from clubs that can offer a lot more than us? I.e. Bright Osayi-Samuel.
Dunne off? on 12:00 - Jan 31 with 3160 views | BklynRanger | As much as Jimmy would undoubtedly be missed, and we certainly can't turn down 2m at this point, I'd throw in a bit of speculation that I don't think Marti really wants to play with that sort of big physical converted CB at RB. It's been working great as part of the more pragmatic style, but he bought Santos to play in a certain, more mobile way, and then Ashby, and he's backing Ashby through a difficult period. Jimmy has been great but Marti might be quite keen to use the money to try again rather than commit to a new contract for Dunne - either by fixing Ashby and keeping him, or finding someone else.

For some reason I've always felt that Marti has never rated Dunne and was always looking to replace him so without any evidence or source I'm going for the latter !

Wilder's comments in the last week have said it all. After they lost to Hull on Friday he said in his Sky interview it was inevitable, been coming, should have happened in the previous two home games because "look at the team we're putting out, we're on the bones of our ars, desperately need reinforcements". They made a quadruple sub in the second half adding Tyrese Campbell, Jesurun Rak-Sakyi, Vinicius Silva and Rhian Brewster to their attack. We're going through a season with Michi Frey, Zan Celar and two kids as our forwards. Then this morning... But they are light at the back after losing loan star Harry Souttar to a season-ending Achilles’ injury, leaving Anel Ahmedhodzic and Jack Robinson as the Blades’ only fit and senior centre-halves. They have players who can cover in a crisis, including youngster Jamal Baptiste, Alfie Gilchrist and Rhys Norrington-Davies. That's Chelsea's Alfie Gilchrist there, stolen from our academy, described as a "youngster" who can "cover" in an emergency. Already signed Harry Clarke from Ipswich this week.

"he bought Santos..." Hmmmm. I think we only ended up with Ashby because Cifuentes took one look at Santos and said "da fck is this?".

They can spank even more millions on bringing in someone because they don't want more than 5 loans in their squad because someone might miss out. Prescient demonstration of the problem between the ex PL teams and the rest of us.

Well as I intimated in my earlier post, the evidence would seem to point to the latter. Someone posted on here an excellent interview with Jimmy from an Irish newspaper which (from memory) said no new contract had been agreed (or poss even discussed) but that Jimmy was incredibly happy, saw it as his club, no intention to leave etc. The narrative here seems to be that if someone offers 2m we have to accept. I get we must avoid a Bright/ Manning scenario at all costs. But if we could get him to re-sign, and he continues to play as he does, who is to say he wouldn't be worth more than £2m in the summer?

Agreed. If - IF - we could get him to re-sign, I wouldn't take £2m for him. Unless, of course, we've messed up the budget and FFP compliance is dependant on future sales.

Or the club have made other clubs aware Dunne is available and want to cash in, regardless of the contract situation. Brutally honest, this is a player that was a nervous wreck playing centre back under successive managers, Warburton onwards. He was not good. He didn't even play under MC until converted to a full back and we have had 12 months of Dunne playing at a decent level and that is down to Marti. Dunne isn't going to get any better than he is playing now so he should be sold. It's the coach I'm worried about losing!

Well you know.... football isn't it? Precocious talent, drop of the shoulder, the nutmeg, jiggery pokery, abracadbra I want to reach out and grab you, diamond formation, free expression of football - uncategorisable! Those Brazillians broke the mould. Marvellous.

Do you reckon he's bothered about dogsh!t or jumping from £10k a week to £20k, excluding any signing on fee and re-location costs? The only good player I recall being happy to see leave was Sir Les, who had more than done enough for QPR and deserved to go to the next level, maybe even a year earlier. If JD moved to Sheff, its not to progress as a player, its just for money, which makes him more like Manning in my book

Well that's just it isn't it. If we flog him to Sheff Utd for £2m then it's pretty clear he wasn't going to sign, otherwise we wouldn't do it.
Dunne off? on 13:21 - Jan 31 with 1804 views | stevec | I’d hate to see Jimmy go but I could understand if we push Sheffield hard on price as they’re desperate for a Soutar replacement and the difference in Sky money if they don’t go up is surely worth a few million of their present finances. I would think we’d persevere with Ashby at RB with the option of the Southampton lad playing in that position if needed. 8 points from relegation salvation or at least 34 points away from the play offs suggests muddling through for another 3 months is perfectly manageable.

obv if this deal was to go through then expect cook to have.a reaccurance of his recent injury and morrison to also break down , leaving us with no fit centre backs that we actually own till the end of the season .

Dunne off? on 13:46 - Jan 31 with 1433 views | QPRConor2000 | Got to bear in mind that weve only just let Santos. If we let Jimmy go then our only natural RB option for the rest of the season is Ashby and hes a loanee of course. I just dont see how we let Dunne go given its late in the day and also the fact that we might not be able to get a replacement sorted before the deadline.
