Expectations on Russell Martin this season on 16:26 - Jul 18 by grabsplatter
We absolutely have to move the ball quicker, it was painfully slow last year. We had the same issue (although not as extreme) at times under Potter. The Naughton/Fisher goal kick nonsense has to go too!
The tetris tactic is a frustrating one although I am comfortable with it and understand it, it needs to be adapted on and I think it will be......movement in the middle and final third needs to be highlighted and worked on to make it a success.
The Naughton/Keeper thing isn't going anywhere. He explained it in the forum. Basic concept to create a spare man as they will send one to press who can be taken out of the game straight away. In theory you can then work it to have a spare man through the entire move. It will be Darling this season rather than Naughts. Ball speed was the biggest issue with this but we had some games later on where we seemed to nail it....Milwall away was really good. But Martin will live or die on this hill.

And to stop pfaffing about with it in our own box and playing suicide passes across the face of the penalty area....
I think we have a better suad this season already. If we can bring in the 1 or 2 more we need we should be aiming for 6-10 as a minimum.
The pressure is on Martin now, lets see how he responds.
I agree and im hoping thats something we have learned. There are times to play and there are times it has to go, we got a little stuck on that at times last season. There will always be an error or two, but hopefully not to the extent of last year.
Ignoring the positions above, i would like to think a top 8 finish should be very achievable. Hopefully in the playoffs.

Not a chance, he's had his season of grace as was promised, improvements this year or he will be under serious pressure from above. As he should be. I'm still quietly confident if the squad stay in place we are in for an excellent season.
this is correct...ge has had 46 games two full transfer windows n which he has been backed not forgetting he was backed last summer with Downes and Pato..his choices and Ntgam. He has had a full preseason so we need to come out of the blocks flying unless we lose Piroe of course

I'm sure there's a theory behind it but in the real world it's 1 of the most irritating tactics I've ever seen from a Swans team

If you understand it and are comfortable with it, then why does he need to change it?
Or is that your way of recognising it doesn’t work without ceding too much territory to those who told you just that?

The theory behind the goal kick thing is fair enough, but nobody presses. They wised up to that about halfway through the season.
Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

As a matter of interest Vetch are you optimistic or pessimistic for the season, if we manage to keep our main players and tweak the fringe players. You know I am a half full supporter and really looking forward to how it pans out, how about you.

And that is why it needs to be adapted, I understand trying it at the start of the game. When it works, it works well from what I have witnessed but if there is no press or just a lazy step or 2 forward from the opposition forward......we need to adapt it, likely with a short kick out with 2 defenders dropping to dangle that extra carrot to create the space.
As I said, I am comfortable with it and certainly know the rewards it can bring when it works......i think a quicker striding centre half in Darling will certainly make it an extra tool for us this coming season.

I am looking forward to seeing the benefits the new restart coach brings, I would expect improvements from goal kicks as well as corners.

Don't answer it Vetch. It's a trap. We are full on not half full

How often does this tactic create anything. We still end up in our own half after a dozen passes and quite often pass back to the keeper for him to lump it forward. It's farcical really.

THIS id the most aposite post Ive seen regarding our "tactics" which to me look as if we want to look good even if it means losing a then we get the mantra that we are ,work in progress /changing for the better/being brave. All utter crepe. That so many have been taken in is the single most bizarre facet that Ive witnessed in 60 years plus of supporting/following the club. We have not witnessed a coach before basically telling us HE will change it all and make us a proper club. His words. Stats mean nothing as do passing averages etc.

We don't deserve this,none of us .
I’ve seen no quotes from Martin stating ‘ He will change it all and make us a proper club’
A great believer in taking anything you like to wherever you want to.

Well WR I have an open mind....we have a good squad...lets hope we can keep Piroe...then its down to Martin..has he learnt?
I look forward to the season as I do every season as I have said elsewhere on here we need to see where we are after 10 games though the first 5 should be an indicator.
Like you hsave said no more excuses, but I cant wait for the season to start as I always do and if we are doing well I will be happy

Thanks for the reply, I think broadly we are thinking along the same lines.

That is the problem with sticking rigidly to one plan, it becomes entirely predictable. And it did becoe entirely predictable.
If we stick with that plan all season we will continue to ship silly goals. Lets hope Martin has an answer.
Reading on here suggest we all support Stoke or Cardiff city. we follow Swansea city AFC. This means the players can pass move and receive passes in tight situations and prevail. Passing out from the back should be in the cub DNA. Many many Europe clubs d this and youth teams of sophisticated football countries as well.
Cardiff fans often say they wish they could play like Swansea but cannot because they had Flint Morrison and Nelson.
Its bizarre Swansea fans are saying the same things. "we do not have the players to play like this". It supports the path of mediocrity. Swansea must endeavour to play like elite teams with sub elite players. Britton Gower Rangel and Taylor for example.

the problem is trying to play the Martin way which is unique. we have played from the back since Martinez...this why he moved Keon from the wing to be the outlet for our centre backs....We continued under Brendan but we got caught at times remember Arsenal away and the mistake between Fab and Rangel....and despite peoples beliefs we played out from the back under Cooper...its why we went one down up at Stoke. the issue under Martin is we push everyone else up and we left the keeper and Naughton ( Darling this season probably)without other supporting players . Its tue way Matin tries to play out from the back that is the issue.. we have players capable of playing the ball but eeven Man City players would have the same issues trying to play the Martin way

The mistake you are making is thinking Martin’s way is the Swansea way.
It’s not, nothing even remotely similar.
Martin’s system is further away from that DNA you talk about than the likes of Stoke or Cardiff. We have never played anything remotely like Martin’s style before and will likely never see it again after he has left.
It’s ludicrous. Surely you look further than the possession stats? - (Which ironically is also not remotely similar to our history, we never went for 75% possession).
So in short, I don’t know what you are looking at in order to think it’s the same?

It seems more doom mongers are popping up doubting Russy plans. This can only be a good thing.
Now, look at what DR P has posted and argue rationally against it. Yiu can’t. He has defined exactly what we are right now. No faux Martin loyalty,no long term plan,no proper club aspirations,no trust in Russ . It is a sham and many are seeing it.

No amount of personal abuse changes this either

That s a fair point . It’s hard to be objective and I really try but ,like most,I probably fail. I ll tell you something ,keep it to yourself, when fixtur list announced I look and plan what games I feel I should go to. This is the first time in 35 years I have simply not bothered. I have changed family dos, holidays and social gatherings to fit in a game. Martin has single-handedly killed my enthusiasm.
Winston is right in that I am never happy, content, hate every manager etc .We all do eventually.
