It's pretty obvious really.

Lets see now, I'm rich enough to move abroad, I can choose a country with a better climate, better schools, better healthcare and better public services..... These are the people that spend a lot of time abroad anyway. Question, what would the legailyt be in exiling people who merely chose to live away from the UK when they have committed no crime?

We need to have a balance where the wealthy, who’ve made an enormous amount of cash over the last 14 years pay a fair amount as do the rest of the poolulation. We need to foster a climate where people can make money and become better off while still paying a reasonable return. In terms of the people moving abroad, we could tighten up some of the loop holes. Id start with the 90 day rule for UK citizens living abroad, currently a day is only counted if you’re in the country at midnight, so if someone fly’s in at 6am and flies out at 11pm that doesn’t count towards the 90 days. I’d change the rules so that people flying in to the uk from tax havens such as the IOM, Jersey on a regular basis were brought in to our tax system.
For those who think the rich should pay more tax on 10:27 - Oct 12 with 724 views | Dr_Winston | Someone earning £250,000 p.a. will, after tax and NI, be taking home approx £143k. A reduction of £107,000. Someone on the UK average salary of £35,000 p.a. will take home roughly £28k. A reduction of £7,000. So even though the person on the higher wage only earns roughly seven times the salary, they will pay approximately fifteen times more tax and NI. As this thread neatly demonstrates, the argument made by the Left has absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with fairness. High earners already pay considerably more than others do, at a higher rate. By no definition of the word is that "fair". It's a heady mix of envy and economic illiteracy. [Post edited 12 Oct 11:31]

Anyone with half a brain knows there's a balance to be struck that optimises tax income. Draconian tax policies change behaviour and reduce overall tax income for the Government. I'd say the politics of stupidity rather than envy.

That's fair. Wealth taxes have been tried elsewhere and failed miserably. Even The Grauniad is willing to report on cases. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/apr/10/super-rich-abandoning-norway-at-re

Nothing to do with Brexit just all to do with a socialist government over taxing the hard working and ambitious only to waste the money on benefits.. Did you read the latest trade figures. Imports from the EU down 1% in August and exports to EU up 10%

I'm more concerned with thr super rich and corporations, they manage to avoid a large amount of tax via loopholes and silly rules put in place by politicians for less than good reasons. People who are very well off but not really rich by modern standards pay a lot of tax but the super rich and corporations often don't.

The failure to agree common standards and rates between countries has given those large corporations and the super rich plenty of choice and ways around tax systems. I'm a bit wary of the headline profit figure on corporations, this has to be considered alongside overall turnover, the contribution to the whole system and the nature of the business. If a business is employing many, paying employer taxes and generating tax income through VAT etc. playing it's part in the country's economy and in a business that requires continual investment then the overall contribution needs to be considered.

Yeah, corprations register their head offices in low tax countries like the ROI and so avoid paying billions in tax on money earned in the UK. Sometimes a corporation has even gotten a tax rebate despite earning hundreds of millions. They know how to play the system. The system isn't fit for purpose is the real problem.

The ROI was very keen to not align corporation tax rates in Europe, some countries are happy to create the conditions for large corporations to play the game. Once one country does it others feel they have to offer something and so on it goes.

It never occurred to them they would move out of Wales to England. |
What you say is correct and in fact the reverse of this is also true. If the Welsh Government reduced taxes on any English based companies would relocate. The Irish are a very wealthy country as a result of this. It is not only Apple and other tech companies but food companies as well. A brief inspection of your larder will be full of boxes listing in the fine print companies based in Dublin.

No tax dodging loopholes, and the rich (over £100,000 ?) pay the share they can pay. The easily led Brexit voting working class still dont realise that avoiding taxes for the rich was a huge part of the unsaid but obvious Brexit ambition. Just think mun …. If you are a working class welsh person on here arguing not to tax the rich cos the rich might flee …. then the London media have done a job on you. Know your enemy. Its not other working class people that they tell you are work shy, its Mogg, Johnson, idiot Truss, and Farage. They know nothing of Wales and care even less. Many senior doctors in the NHS earn more than that and it is common in other public offices. Do you want to drive them all abroad. You could always increase their wages to keep them here but the ripple effect would come all the way down the wage scale, therfore defeating the objective you are suggesting.

Maybe its more than £100,000 but that seemed a lot to me. Maybe its £200,000 in todays world …? How much do you really need for a comfortable life ? Anyhow its about getting money into the public services, nobody wants to drive them abroad but thats up to them. Others will fill the gap if they run away. Keep in mind its only after a certain level is reached that a top tax rate would apply. Below that ,they pay the same rates as everyone else.

True you will always get others to fill the job, but if they were as good as the ones they would be replacing they would already have the job. Are suggesting that you don't care if the best move on, previously known as the brain drain, as long as it fits your thinking. There are probably several on here who are greatfull to a specialist who looked after them and are glad that they didn't have someone who just filled the gap.

The stats are out there for everyone to read. The tax take in this country is at a record high. The reason this country is strapped for cash is because of the stupid decisions made by various governments of all persuasions during the last four decades or so. We can keep taxing people til the pips squeak to King John levels but it will make absolutely no difference until governments stop spunking huge amounts of money away on stupid vanity projects, ideological nonsense and other pointless ventures.
