Ashley Williams on 07:23 - Aug 4 by phact0rri | had a little peek over at the everton forums. apparently ITK over there say the initial bid was 8M +2M add ons, and they've tabled the second offer as of this evening with 10M + 2m add ons. Not sure if this is enough for our captain. Course its all heresay at the moment. For me, if we don't have a replacement ready to be hired (and sorry I don't know if I rate Amat at the level of Ash), I don't know if this feels like a good decision. |
He isn't as good as Ash at the moment, though in all fairness he never has a bad game when called upon and really hasn't been given the chance to develop with regular first team games. Was great alongside Fernandez at the end of last season. I'm in the same camp as you. Cashing in only seems a good idea if we reinvest wisely. Resale value gets less important every time the to money goes up. We would have no natural leaders at the back. Having said that, if FG thinks he can develop Amat into an equal or better player, you have to trust his judgement.

Ashley Williams on 07:35 - Aug 4 by Tummer_from_Texas | Y'all know what they got for Stones. And Ash and .750 net profit is a sound idea. For another bottom half club that fired its manager, only at the END of the season. This is baffling. [Post edited 4 Aug 2016 7:36]

It's irrelevant what they get for Stones - he probably has another 12 seasons in him and/or resale value and has tonnes of potential. You should be comparing Ash to any other 32 year old centre halves moving on.

I think where resale value is important is that if we sell Ash now then we have a good chance of replacing him for very little (net). If we don't, then he finishes his career here and we need to find all of the money to sign a replacement, at the expense of another position. What it boils down to is whether we think it's better keeping Ash for another season or two as a first teamer and then as a squad player (earning big money) or getting £10m for him. Most of those guys have a bunch of injuries and otherwise act 32. I'd agree if we were comparing apples to apples in terms of motivation. But Ash is worth a LOT to a club (maybe ours, for example) in 2016-2017. When we're already thin at Centre Back. And there's a tremendous present value factor that needs to prevail when you are ultimately trying to avoid relegation, if we're being honest. I'm just expecting us to be hard asses with our quickly becoming table-rivals Everton, for the sake of the club. If having Ash here next season costs us Amat, it'll be a lot easier replacing Jordi Amat if we're not in the Championship.

Things change. The time is right. It would be a mistake not to sell him now at that price.

The fact is that Ashley Williams is 32 whether you think he "acts" it or not. He's played a hell of a lot of games and they may catch up with him soon. He finished the season better than he started it but I saw no evidence of any leadership when we barely won a game for nearly a third of the season or in defending set pieces. For me, it's a goodbye, thank you very much and use that money to sign hopefully his long term successor.

Ashley Williams on 00:52 - Aug 4 by builthjack | Agree, we need him to stay, so tell Everton to get lost. |
This - for me it's all about having a straight conversation with Ash, making clear to him how important he is & that he is NOT for sale at any price, however if he really wants to give it a go at the toffees he needs to come out & confirm that (not overly fussed about the 'handing in a transfer request' bollux) at which point it's as much money as we can get. Don't get the whole if Stones is worth £50M Ash must be worth ...... (fill in any number you like) ..... They are two totally different negotiations, Stones is 10 years younger & it's Citeh who what him......... If we get anything around £12M (IF he goes) it is an exceptional amount for a 32 year old defender.

good grief no. If we're getting back to a passing game, using clever technical players, then he would be the anti-Swansea.

Good way to end up stuck with a player that handed in a transfer request. No way they pay £15m cash for a 32 year old. The Stones money - if that deal even happens - will trickle in over years.

Everyone knows they've just been taken over & have a tonne of cash. Squeezing another £5m out of them is nothing to do with any proposed Stones transfer..

We also have new owners, but it seems we are more prudent with our cash, historically Everton is a massive club compared to us.
