Energy bills 23:01 - Aug 24 with 48295 viewsHayesender

Watching the news earlier, they were talking about the impact these energy bill rises will have on small businesses.

It got me thinking (dangerous I know) about the potential effect it could have on our club, and other clubs of similar and smaller size?

Not only the day to day running costs and matchday costs, but also the affect its gonna have on attendances.

Obviously when it comes down to heating, eating, mortgage, rent etc, days out with mates and family watching football, or any sporting event, are gonna have to take a back seat for many people.

Unless the government (lol) take action now, its gonna be a bleak winter for many people and businesses, and I fear for people's mental well being

"I don't believe that green energy could have solved all this"

It would've been very difficult for green energy to avert all the problems* but if we had committed to it more, for example, making solar panels and even a battery, mandatory on all new buildings then it would certainly have helped.

Having a big push to improve insulation could have made a huge difference but that sort of thing is not fashionable, perhaps because it's not as glamorous and media friendly as a big, new shiny power station or windfarm.

I wish I had solar panels which produced electricity, mine only provide hot water, but I was able to switch the gas entirely last month and let the sun heat the entire hot water tank. I hope this doesn't sound smug, by the way, I am just trying to illustrate the practical benefits of this kit.

I'll hold my hands up and admit that the system can't heat the whole tank all year round but it can for the summer and will even make a contribution in the winter.

* If you can be bothered, see my earlier post on this thread, it mentions the fact that credible and detailed plans do exist for getting all of Britain's energy from sources other than fossil fuels.

Stafford University and Delaware University have both produced plans for doing this for the entire world.

Lots of things work well in theory but this is an extremely complex system

I hope you realise that your opinions is gambling with the lives of hundreds of millions of the worlds poorest who will starve to death over the next few years if fertiliser cannot be produced in the same quantities as it has been

Gas being the number one input into creation of phosphate and ammonium fertiliser.

If your papers are wrong and as many extremely credible people who unlike the uni professors have worked in heavy industry see the incredible Doomberg team (one of the most successful finance subscriptions on substack) who would dispute your cited papers

Just know that if you/ they are wrong hundreds of millions will literally starve to death.

I was for a brief time loosely involved in what was the Sirius minerals Potash project in Yorkshire. A fertiliser most commonly found in Russia and Belarus. A huge deposit there held up for many years by local Green and NIMBY protestors. The consequence of these selfish middle class ignorant fools is going to be felt as they have held that up

Those middle class NIMBY's won't starve to death. We in the west will outbid the developed world for the reduced food available as the effects on harvests are felt this decade

But they will starve to death.

By the way- who remembers when we were creating and borrowing money to give healthy people in their 20's and 30's £2,500 a month to sit at home and not work?

Remember the abuse people got for suggesting that wasn't a good idea and we might regret those consequences and want that money later from the problems it triggered

Feb 2022 inflation was 6.1% in the UK that was before Ukraine invasion

We also now have £2,300,000,000,000 (trillion) of debt. (And an additional £2.8 trillion of untuned public sector pensions)

Interest rates are going up so the cost of servicing it is going up. To borrow more money as those suggesting protests are presumably wanting means our currency is further devalued and we will as a direct consequence see more inflation regardless of our energy problems

We are a nation of entitled moaners and we haven't looked after our bank balance. An English person is no more automatically entitled to a free healthcare system or a pension you haven't actually saved for than your average Venezuelan or Zimbabwean.

We will find that out this decade unfortunately

Out of interest what has Martin Lewis said about addressing the supply problem?

As there is only a finite supply of energy if we distort the market by printing / borrowing money to artificially suppress the price for individuals then the demand will be higher than the supply and we will then see blackouts in this country (I expect this in Feb)

If he isn’t addressing the supply problem then although well intentioned then he is potentially doing more harm than good in the medium to long term

Show me where I have said we should not use gas for fertiliser.

I have only been talking about its use to produce energy.

I have only been writing about energy.

You have completely twisted what I wrote to suit some unrelated agenda of yours.

"Things had started becoming increasingly desperate at Loftus Road but QPR have been handed a massive lifeline and the place has absolutely erupted. it's carnage. It's bedlam. It's 1-1."

Saying "I have only been talking about its use to produce energy" is just a quite unbelievable statement and shows you are so far away from understanding what you're talking about.

Producing fertiliser like phosphate and ammonium is literally using gas to produce energy. It requires massive amounts of energy in this process.

Gas isn't as you seem to think it is just some food ingredient that you sprinkle on like your Paprika and Chilli pepper seasoning to your Jambalaya is that you add before one of these middle class dinner parties. You can't just sprinkle it on to create fertiliser

You can't just drizzle on your hexane to extract your edible seed oils.

You can’t say will have a little bit of fossil fuels for this but not for that. The places they are extracted from a large scale projects so you can’t just say I’ll have a smidgen for fertiliser use but hold the central heating please.

Gas is a fossil fuel. My first post where I pointed out the attitude of the Western politicians to the fossil fuel industry and future expansion is what has caused this issue. Now because they were discouraged from investing in new deposits the supply is less and so the prices are up because Renewables aren't ready or able yet to take up the slack (not enough lithium accessible to produce the batteries needed for storage i that scale, which also aren't good enough yet anyway)

You also said:

"credible and detailed plans do exist for getting all of Britain's energy from sources other than fossil fuels.

Stafford University and Delaware University have both produced plans for doing this for the entire world"

You hammer down the fossil fuel industry and naively think we can get by on renewables then you get issues like this article from yesterday:

'The UK’s last fertiliser plant is to halt production, sparking fears that it could lead to a sudden shortfall in carbon dioxide needed for the food and drink industry.
CF Fertilisers confirmed the move at its remaining UK ammonia plant at Billingham near Middlesbrough after soaring energy costs made production “uneconomical”. '

https://www.independent.co.uk/business/fears-of-new-co2-shortage-after-last-fert

This is also CO2 producer ultimately as well and "CO2 is used in a raft of sectors but particularly in food and drink, including in the slaughter of pigs and chickens, to add fizz to beer and soft drinks, and in packaging foods safely"

People moaning on here about poor businesses like pubs being forced to shut down. But it's because of the net zero policies they support that this is happening

Net zero and the push for renewables was an ambitious target when Europe could rely on Russian gas but now we can't the posts on here are just so scary as those opinions sound nice. And everyone nods and agrees with you at the pub or at a middle class dinner party but the reality is so far removed from what most on here seem to understand

Fertilisers trade on a global market and the US because of their investment in shale have gas available a fraction of what we have here in Europe. So will see in a few months whether your references to it being "absurd" hold up as mass unemployment hits Europe

Yours and the worlds global living standards are a direct consequence of how much energy we have to use of waste

As we have less fossil fuels, which you have made clear you support, we now have less fertiliser around the world. So crops will have less yield and millions of people will starve as the direct consequence of the green agenda you support

Simple as that

Quite the coincidence that he managed to organise his many holidays so that he could be in Ukraine for their independence day to try and cement his place in history as some kind of modern day Churchill. What a chancer and what a disgrace of a government we've ended up with.

Just a reminder that MPs will not be personally affected by the energy price hikes. They claim their gas and electricity bills (either for their London home or constituency home) on their expenses - ie all paid for by us, the taxpayers.

Very grim times ahead but I think November will see the real start of trouble on the streets in a large scale way but it's already begun in terms of general rising crime I think, this will grow and develop more and more in the coming months as businesses shut down and people get desperate.

Nationalise Public Utilities ✅
Invest in Renewables ✅
Retrofit Houses and Appliances ✅

‘How will we pay for this’ I hear you ask. I ask how we can afford not to.

What about the cost of doing nothing?

It was easy for the government to find literally billions to siphon into the pockets of their cronies for dodgy PPE equipment and Dido Harding’s lamentable test and trace scheme. The government literally creates money, that is one of its functions. It is only a question of whether the country has the resources to match. And seeing as, despite the self-harm of the last few years, the UK is one of the richest countries in the world and is a significant producer of energy, it almost certainly does.
