Energy bills 23:01 - Aug 24 with 48292 viewsHayesender

Watching the news earlier, they were talking about the impact these energy bill rises will have on small businesses.

It got me thinking (dangerous I know) about the potential effect it could have on our club, and other clubs of similar and smaller size?

Not only the day to day running costs and matchday costs, but also the affect its gonna have on attendances.

Obviously when it comes down to heating, eating, mortgage, rent etc, days out with mates and family watching football, or any sporting event, are gonna have to take a back seat for many people.

Unless the government (lol) take action now, its gonna be a bleak winter for many people and businesses, and I fear for people's mental well being

Ours helpfully lists warm spaces which also have foodbanks attached...

It's this sort of joined-up thinking that Rishi will no doubt be bringing to the job.

Don’t worry when Labour win the next GE fuel bills will plummet, food banks will be a thing of the past, interest rates will drop like a stone taking mortgage rates with them and we will all be happy ever after

Yep. Some people cannot grasp that the fuel crisis and cost of living crisis along with high inflation is a western thing and not a UK thing. Thanks mainly to Putin and also our own inability to have the storage facilities and also being too reliant on the Russians. But I would say that given that the big energy companies such as BP and She’ll are screaming at the government to empty their wallets a windfall tax has to happen as this will reduce government borrowing. In addition to this as HMRC ably proved that they can reverse payments during the pandemic then the U.K. government can surely target those who need the help most rather than have a blanket cap on energy costs. I’m ok, I’m lucky, I can afford to get through this fine, I don’t need help. But I do know some who are desperate.

Absolutely - the one thing an image of hungry people huddling together in a church for warmth says to me is how much worse things would have been with Corbyn.

In 2021 we only got 4% of our gas and 9% of our oil from Russia.

Storage facilities I'll give you. More should have been planned and built by both parties in the last 25 years but how stupid is that decision to close Rough, the largest storage facility, in 2017 (which as Chief Secretary to the Treasury Truss's fingerprints are all over) looking today? Short sighted doesn't cover it.

The main cause of increasing energy prices is due to every political party and almost every politician's blinkered rush to net zero. As you say, storage facilities closed, extraction of oil & gas reduced (although this would still be at market cost) and no new nuclear power stations built. Renewables on a good day count on average 15% of supply. Yet the renewable energy providers have no windfall placed on their profits despite wind and sun being 'free' meaning massive dividend payouts to their companies shareholders.
Green energy levies account for almost 25% of our electricity bills.

Time to green energy levies and VAT on energy bills, place a windfall tax on renewables and put net zero on hold until the world settles down

“In 2021 we only got 4% of our gas and 9% of our oil from Russia”.

What was Germany and Italys percentages? Because now they are bidding for the LNG that we were bidding for. So demand up, if that supply doesn’t increase to meet it then that’s why our prices rise even if we were buying much from Russia directly.

Also we are all buying Russia’s oil still anyway even when pretending otgherwise. A fact to prove that. China imported a record 1 million b/d of Malaysian crude in September. But that’s double their real output…

Also worth pointing out that storage is always and only meant to be a supplement to incoming supplies via pipelines. This is because there is a natural constraint due to the nature of storing gas on how much you can extract.

Where the problems will come when you consider the daily maximum you can draw from storage versus the daily maximum demand. So should we have a cold period this winter that’s when the risk of blackouts or business closures comes

I’ve got a smart meter at work that was installed by SSE in 2012. It hasn’t been able to send them readings in years. I had a bloke come round once from Morrisons Data Services who said he was installing a new battery that was supposed to fix it. I’m not sure if he actually did anything as it still doesn’t send them readings. I started submitting my own readings through their online business account portal after they overcharged me but I had a letter through the post from them last week saying that my latest report had not worked and that in future I have to send them my readings by email.

I mean they’re making all this money and they can’t have a working meter reading system? Either they’re completely incompetent or crooks. Both maybe.

Yeah, the flat I used to live in had a similar issue, for some reason smart meters simply couldn't work there. We had the little screen showing our use but it didn't send the readings. So I was a victim of this Direct debit BS as well for a long time, although admittedly I could have kept my readings more up to date.

Perhaps worth giving your supplier a call to see what they can do now. If they can't sort it, change to a supplier who can.

The main cause of increasing energy prices is due to every political party and almost every politician's blinkered rush to net zero.
>> It’s the rising price of gas which is causing it. "Energy bill increases are being driven by record-high wholesale gas prices - not green levies which represent a small fraction of bills," a UK government spokesperson told Sky News.
https://news.sky.com/story/green-levies-why-scrapping-them-wouldnt-lower-your-bi

>> In fact, David Cameron’s policies on renewables are likely to cost every household as much as £150 a year by the autumn:
https://www.theguardian.com/money/2022/mar/19/david-cameron-green-crap-energy-pr

As you say, storage facilities closed, extraction of oil & gas reduced (although this would still be at market cost) and no new nuclear power stations built.
>> Agreed re. the storage facilities, we need them because the UK is not ready to give up on fossil fuels yet, but even if you leave the climate change issue to one side, we have to move on from oil and gas because all the easily accessible reserves are already being exploited. That means the use of unconventional, less efficient, dirtier technologies like extraction from tar sands and fracking; with traditional oil fields, it takes about one barrel of oil to extract 25 barrels, with tar sands, the ratio is 1 to 5. We will run out of fossil fuels anyway, unconventional sources of oil are only adding about 7% to the world’s reserves.

>> I agree that we need nuclear power stations but bear in mind that they are incredibly expensive (the UK’s *current* nuclear clean-up bill is £131bn), intermittent power sources. The only power source which is genuinely not intermittent is tidal. Oh, and the Severn Barrage would generate more than Hinckley C, more cheaply, more cleanly, and over a much longer operating life.

Renewables on a good day count on average 15% of supply.
>> It’s much more than that, a quick web search revealed that, according to the National Grid, on some days, it is as much as 65% (1% hydro, 39% wind, 25% solar).

Yet the renewable energy providers have no windfall placed on their profits despite wind and sun being 'free' meaning massive dividend payouts to their companies shareholders.
>> The “fuel” might be free but the infrastructure certainly isn’t. I would still be in favour of a windfall tax but lower than for fossil fuel based energy sources because renewables help against climate change (reducing the need for, and cost of, flood defences etc) and do not harm people’s health, harm which has a monetary cost to the NHS.

Green energy levies account for almost 25% of our electricity bills.
>> That’s not true. Green levies make up 8% of energy - or "dual fuel" - bills, down from 12% last year (see link above).

Time to green energy levies and VAT on energy bills, place a windfall tax on renewables and put net zero on hold until the world settles down.
>> The world will “settle down” much more quickly if it adopts net zero. Dwindling and climate affecting fossil fuels are causing a lot of the world’s problems as countries battle to maintain their supply lines. Forget the climate issue for a moment, imagine what it would be like if the UK was completely energy independent. No need to worry about wars, pirates or natural disasters overseas holding up supplies of gas or oil.

"Things had started becoming increasingly desperate at Loftus Road but QPR have been handed a massive lifeline and the place has absolutely erupted. it's carnage. It's bedlam. It's 1-1."

Knew it was too good to be true, doesn't look like our "free" solar panels promised by the Welsh Assembly will be happening after all.I reckon they've overstretched themselves and gone skint.
"Maybe next year".Yeah right.
