I’m trying to get excited about this World Cup, but to no avail :-((.
I’ve just watched Sky Sports World Cup preview with Gary Neville, Jamie Redknapp, Jamie Carragher & Karen Carney. Utterly depressing viewing. Same old, same old. Picking players for the starting XI not playing for their clubs, or totally off form.
I’m hoping this thread can get the juices flowing.
Do any of you think England have a chance?

Think commentator just said there was only one in the last World Cup. The big stand out for me in the early games as I said above is the low quality and quantity of centre forwards. There's some properly basic strikers first choice for some of the teams we've seen so far - Denmark quite a good example, great team topped off by Martin Braithwaite and somebody who was fcking crap for Cardiff. One Kane or Giroud type seems to make a colossal difference.

Kind of what I'm saying. He's 34 years old, and still the whole hope of that team is on him. Giroud, 36 - obviously France have Mbappe as well but they're still starting a 36 year old who despite his record most people in this country seem to bizarrely underrate.

The game has really moved on from the time of the likes of Clive Allen and Lineker. My own theory is that trajectory began when transfer fee values for strikers became too stretched and clubs turned to developing attacking midfielders as an alternative. Now squads are stuffed with attacking midfielders and there are very few pure strikers left in the game.

Loads and loads of factors to it. When I was playing junior football everybody wanted to play up front. You speak to people involved in our academy now they tell you "everybody wants to be 'a ten'".

If I had a son or daughter, I would try to turn them into a defensive midfielder, on the basis that I have never been in an organising the team situation before a game where one of the players has said: "Tell you what, I'll be happy to play as the holding midfielder". Actually, I tell a lie, it did happen once...and that person was me .
I'm sure coaches would be over the moon to come across a kid who can mark, tackle and pass who is actually happy to hang back and shield the defence.
Does anyone know a kid who *wants* to play as a defensive midfielder? I'm fascinated to know.

My son (8) wants to be an out-and-out striker Not interested in any of this false 9 etc. malarky
Top scorer last season with 22 in 12 games and top scorer so far this season with 8 in 8 despite now being played further back for segments of each games compared to last season.

When I was involved in coaching my son's team a few years back, they alll wanted to be ACM.
