FIFA World Cup thread. 12:02 - Nov 15 with 133168 viewsSnipper

I’m trying to get excited about this World Cup, but to no avail :-((.

I’ve just watched Sky Sports World Cup preview with Gary Neville, Jamie Redknapp, Jamie Carragher & Karen Carney. Utterly depressing viewing. Same old, same old. Picking players for the starting XI not playing for their clubs, or totally off form.

I’m hoping this thread can get the juices flowing.

Do any of you think England have a chance?

That first half was proper 'lull them into a false sense of security' stuff. Looked Brigg Town standard.

shows you how well England did yesterday, these games can be very awkward in the group stage

That second goal for Saudi was incredible though

Looking forward to the Souness v keane scrap at the end

Whoever the Saudis have in their defence, sign the bloody lot of them up.

I think Argentina have been good enough. Very creative in the first half, and keeping the tempo up despite two sucker-punches.

Saudi have been brilliant at defending their lead, though.

Allahu Akbar! Still possible for Argentina to pull themselves together against Poland and Mexico though.

I thought Argentina were good in the first half but lacked composure hence three goals ruled out for offside. Too many delayed passes or runs made too early. I did wonder at half time if they’d live to regret it but only briefly.

As soon as Saudi Arabia got the second, Argentina looked panicked and lacking in imagination. They were getting joy down the right but kept trying to find Messi through the middle which was too congested.

Argentina face an uphill task now as Poland and Mexico are no mugs.

I'll never learn - at half-time I was wondering if I'd gone low with my 3-0 prediction!

A freak result, today, though Saudi Arabia really did defend that lead well.
I think Argentina showed enough to suggest they'll be fine.

Well, well, well, so how's everyone doing negotiating this moral maze?! If you nailed your colours to the mast - as apparently 45% of you did - and said you weren't going to watch, have you reneged?? Have you had a sneaky peek? Come on, I guarantee some of you have, and to be honest, why not?

There are no absolutes, it's not black and white, and I personally have no problem with my apparent hypocrisy in not just watching, but seriously enjoying this feast of football; the game that's just finished being a case in point, how good was that?! Love it that the Saudis stuffed the Argies, this is what football, in its purest essence, is all about - never mind the infinite, myraid overlays that are being applied; at the end of the day, each of us makes our own choices, moral, ethical or otherwise, and mainstream orthodoxy is just that, it's not actual reality, is it? It's a complex set of cultural concepts at this moment in time, in the bizarre unfolding of whatever this existence is. Are you a bad person for enjoying your football? You most certainly are not.

For those of you who are taking the boycott position, well fair play to you, if that's what you want to do, but boy, you're missing some great football! I mean the England game was some match and Wales v USA was fascinating.

Peace and love!

Don't the Argies always start competitions badly? I thought this WC might be their time.

I went for 3-O too. Buggered my Sky Super 6 predictions lol.

No sure about Argentina after that display though. Poland and Mexico will make it very tough for them and I'm sure will get right in their faces.

Second best Scottish stadium to be fair. Cowdenbeath is the best.

Nice one.

East Stirling's old stadium had the wall of a shop very close to one of the goal lines, making taking goal kicks tricky due to the lack of run-up.

It became known as "The World of Leather Wall".

We digress, however

"Things had started becoming increasingly desperate at Loftus Road but QPR have been handed a massive lifeline and the place has absolutely erupted. it's carnage. It's bedlam. It's 1-1."

Yeh we basically had him when Wigan went into admin. Had the piece written up for that one and ready to go, done the medical etc. Cardiff came in last second and blew us out of the water on wages.

I see our hirsute Carthaginian adversary Hannibal is playing. Nearly gave away a penalty!
