The 32-year-old sustained a hamstring injury while bowling in Australia's final one-day international against India last Saturday.

What might have happened if England had gone Down Under earlier and acclimatised? In the Good Old Days didn't they used to go months in advance and play games against provincial sides,Clare Balding XI and stuff? Now they're just off the plane and straight into 45 degrees of fly paper sheeit.

Agreed. We have played poorly this series but we are not helping ourselves as you say with our preparation by virtually going straight off the plane from 5-10 degrees in England into 30 plus, playing three games, none of them against the state teams and only two of them four days, before three weeks later the important stuff begins.

Between the first and the fifth test there is only a two day knockabout. Who the bloody hell agrees to these itineraries FFS?? No wonder we are finding new ways to embarrass ourselves. Having said that, Cook's lack of captaincy skills are being found out big time.

We're going to need to find some more bails to burn by the end of this.......... can't believe I went to bed last night and then got up this morning with hope in my heart and looked at the cricket score!

This could be turning into the worst sporting Christmas ever!

England choked with the ball again trying to get the last man out and surprise surprise, threw away all ten wickets within one day...again...including a 5fer for the least intimidating Aussie spinner in decades. It can only get better but after doin a right good job of completely hashing this match up and throwing away the best chance at winning a match yet

Having panesar and Anderson in the team means you're effectively batting with nine players, broad will get nothing the majority of the time, and Bresnan doesn't look like he can cope with pace either.
Is Bairstow really better than prior?
If the top order don't do their job there's no one to bail them out.
Collapses like this could be the norm from now on.

I was watching the start of play yesterday, I was watching James Anderson trying to bowl Nathan Lyon's head off and I'm thinking why don't you try aiming for his stumps you thick cnt?
Nathan Lyons went on to make an unbeaten and massive 18 runs, that's more runs than Bell, Bresnan, Broad, Anderson and Panesar made put together in fact its 17 more runs than those dick heads managed.
At the start of the England innings the commentators were talking about England building a huge lead, I thought 'oh no-don't say that and went to bed.
Nailed on 5-0 embarrassing defeat.
Cringe worthy.

Agree, Ted.

The bowling last night was rubbish. It was pure arrogant rubbish. It seemed they'd decided they were going to come out and be all "yeah, let's get stuck in to the no. 11, rough in up a bit, show him who's boss, etc, etc". All ego, no brains. Just bowl at the fegging stumps you morons.

Cook must have had a say in that tactic and he'd all night to think about it. If that's the best he can do I really worry. I know he's a very nice bloke, but I'm beginning to think he's a bit "Tim nice but dim". People thought that about Strauss but Strauss was actually an extremely intelligent bloke who was able to stay calm, make decisions (albeit conservative) and get the best out of his players. I think Cook's mind is scrambled.

In terms of the batting, England have again got themselves into a pickle of their own devising. Carberry is a cavalier county player. He's aggressive, hits it hard and goes after bowlers. It looks like someone's been in his ear and told him to leave everything. Well guess what, do that and you don't score runs, allow pressure to build and when you eventually do start to force the pace you can't.

Root should not be batting at 3 (or opening). He simply isn't good enough, whatever anyone says. He should stay at 6 (5 in Trott's absence) and learn his game for a few years there. Bairstow is not good enough for Test cricket. Was pleasantly surprised by his keeping but he doesn't have the technique for Test cricket. Why he's getting so so many chances when Compton got such a short run is beyond me.

Bresnan is passed it with bat and ball. He's bowling 10-15mph slower than their two openers. He's gone. He also can't score a run to save life at the minute.

England to a bit of an overhaul. They need to go back to being aggressive on both sides of the ball. They need pace in the bowling regardless of how expensive it is. They need better technical players in the batting.

I'd keep Carberry in as opener but slowly blood Sam Robson. This kid is class and has now had 3 full county seasons and is scoring buckets of runs for the Lions.

I'd dump Bairstow and look at Buttler. I think he's shown for Somerset and England in T20 cricket that he's got the gonads to play top level cricket. He scores important runs. He made need this season at Lancs to hone his keeping but he then needs to come in.

I'd dump Bresnan. Good bowler, great trier, good career..."thanks very much, Tim". But we need fire power. Get Finn in, tell Saker to steer clear (all Finn's problems stems from Saker's meddling. Every time he returns to Middx for a while we get him firing again and then he goes back to England and Saker starts fannying around with his action : shorter run ups, don't hit the stumps, etc, etc.). Finn is a confidence player. Just tell the bloke to run in and bowl as fast as he can. Sod how many runs he does for. Bowl quick and take wickets. They need to back him properly and just say his place his safe, now bowl quick!

I'd keep Stokes. He seems the right sort.

Most importantly Flower needs to get the team playing aggressive, "front foot" cricket. All this "bowl dry" sh*t and this black and white "leave it or slog it" batting needs to stop.

See how that team goes.

Gooch has to go as batting coach. Yes the players out there must take the blame, but when was the last time we posted a decent score, even during last summer. What is Gooch being employed to do if it's not batting coach?

I think this tour has shown cook isn't captain material. That's no crime, Flintoff was never a capt either. Just let cook open the batting and we'll find another( although I have no idea who). I'm still extremely disappointed in Swann. He should have stuck it out. He's never really had a rough time in the England team. As soon as its got tough he's bailed.

What a pitiful bunch they've become!
One day, that's all we've won in all this series that's become the worst in living history.
I don't think this Aussie team is as bad as some will have you believe, but they're average at best by their usual standards yet its the worst beating i can ever remember.
I've no idea why we've been this bad but its a clear sign the team needs breaking up and re-building starting with a new captain as the current one can't even win a bloody toss.
How embarrassed must the fans be that have followed them over there?
I feel for them.

Agree with this 100%. Would love to see Sam Robson eased into the side.Perhaps Ollie Raynor as well.Thought Malan Had a chance but had a poor season in the ccc.Toby roland jones may develope into a glenn mcgrath type bowler,if we keep the the bowling coach saker away from him.
Id have Angus Fraser to take over from him.
There's Overton down at somerset , FK knows what happend to Rankin on the tour,he must have been caught felching Grahames Gooch.

With Finn,Rankin and Overton we do have genuine strike bowlers to work with.
Would be nice if the selectors could tear their fat arses away from headingly and to a lesser extent ,Old Trafford and look at players from less fashionable counties.

It's been obvious to me for the last few years I'm afraid. As a bowling attack, we simply cannot bowl teams out unless we have the perfect conditions for our bowlers. And even then we often change our bowling approach once we get to the tailenders; after adopting successful tactics to get the top six out for some reason we always start bowling short against the tail which is why teams lower orders always seem to score enough to get them out of trouble after we get into a good position. So at home we will always have a chance because we can get teams out - but even there the batting is fallible and usually the bowlers have to win the match for us. We've now been found out and the Aussies made damn sure we never had favourable conditions for our bowlers.
In short, we're really not that good - when we were top of the international cricket league that was an entirely false position but a lot of our players were believing the hype. Too many of the players are simply not good, or mentally tough, enough for international cricket. The fact that Bresnan - a journeyman county cricketer - gets regular games tells you all you need to know about the lack of talent we have in county cricket in this country. 30 years ago a player like him would have been nowhere near the England side. Batsmen such as Cook and Bell have done it at the top level but are too inconsistent, Trott has been found out as has Swann, Pietersen is a one day slogger who doesn't have the concentration for Test cricket and only wants to play one day games because that's where the money is. Root isn't good enough and the jury is out on the rest of them. Of the bowlers I suspect Anderson is now coming to the end, Panesar is a spinner who barely spins the ball and the rest are flaky at best at the top level. Only Broad looks a top quality bowler, but he starts bowling short once the tail come in. Lots of problems I'm afraid.

good post. Monty bowls the same ball all the time. I think now Anderson is finished. I actually quite like bresnan but he's played here when he's clearly not ready. I cant believe how Finn has gone from the greatest thing since sliced bread to not even being able to get in this side. This team needs a massive overhaul.

We should have picked Finn and told him to just run in and bowl as fast as he can. His results are good, I don't know who is coaching him but that coach is in the wrong job. I wish that coach would fck right off. Nothing to lose in Sydney, we might as well try and give them a dose of their own medicine, speed.
