How do you think people of my age managed, I was married had 2 children a mortgage and a wife who didn't work to fetch up the children. No child care in those days, at one time I was on strike for 13 weeks, no food banks in those days. It does amuse me how some of you on here think they were halcyon days | |

It’s worrying that some of the posters who aren’t yet at pensionable age can’t see their own future….a future where their own parents who worked many years to probably own their own property…their future inheritance….may have to sell it to fund what’s left of their future. Another interesting read among the thread is….and I’m guessing here….retired people today paid their parents pension…and it appears some of the youngsters are not in favour of paying for the triple loc increase . I can't disagree with much of that. We have too many politicians and the vast majority aren't up to the task. Unfortunately the higher up the political pole the less in touch they are with the public. Drakeford was a prime example of this. Totally and utterly out of touch with the people who voted for him. But then look at the circus around electing his successor. It's taken a change in speed limit to engage most people, and that's probably the least of his mess ups. His Draconian COVID rules saw him increase his vote! I've said before but unfortunately there are enough Labour activists and members in Wales to give them carte blanche to do what they want. The other, and more important, side of the coin is the 50+% of people who don't vote at all. Get them out to vote and things will change, but that's exactly why the politicians don't want them to. | | | |

There are 27 x two or more bedroom properties available in Swansea under £100k, only 12 are freehold properties, some are park homes (unmortgagable) and some are or will be cash only as they are not mortgageable etc because of the state their in - no kitchen etc etc or lots of remedial work which means lenders generally wont touch them. There are 13 leasehold properties, 6 are holiday chalets down Gower, some of the remaining properties have lengthy leases, but some have less than a 100 years left which means some lenders won’t lend against the property, they also demand higher deposits and interest rates are higher. It’s far from a rosy picture and it’s much harder for my kids to get on the property market than it was for me 35 years ago. | | | |

I bought my first house on Llangyfelach Road for £34000 in 2001. I was earning about £14k a year relatively fresh out of university. It was a total doer upper. That same house has just sold for £95000 after being trashed in the years since, by tennants I assume. It's a doer upper again. Sorry. It's £110k and still for sale. As night follows day, 100k was a rough example, are your kids in employment, are they married or in a relationship? I'm glad I was able to get you to do some research, nobody is saying it's easier, but people are far to choosier these days, and not willing to start at the bottom. I have to laugh at some people's reasoning. For example, those that argue for an increase in inheritance tax because older people have benefitted from house price inflation don't seem to realise it is the generation below that lose out not the dead person. | |

Both my kids are single and both work. One recently graduated from Uni and has loads of debt, the other is an apprentice and went straight in to work from school. My first house was a terraced house in Neath Port Talbot, bought it knowing it needed work but was naive and ended up gutting the place. Had to make do with second hand furniture and I was lucky my parents bought my living room and stair carpet. [Post edited 14 Dec 23:09]

My eldest has debts north of 50k, tuition fees were around £9k per year, then there’s living expenses for rent etc rtc. The eldest is quite tight when it comes to money and his lifestyle was frugal but he’s still got massive debts. I had just finished my apprenticeship when I bought my first house, oh and I did a bit of googling the house I bought for 40 k in 1988 works out at 134 k now, and that house is on the market now for 200k for a bit of context. | |
