How on earth did he only get 26 caps for Scotland, his defending wouldn’t look out of place now he was so cultured.

Awful news for his family, always came across like a decent bloke who liked the craic, God willing he pulls through, very difficult for family seeing a loved one unwell, so sad

What a rolls royce of a player..

If you look at those 1978 and 1982 world cup squads that Scotland Had, excluding the goalkeepers, I would argue that they were every bit as strong as Englands. Wonderful, talented players in those squads. Proper scottish talent.

Alan Hansen deserves his place right at the heart of it as one of their best ever players.

That 1982 team…if they put Steve Archibald in as rush goalie they might have won everything.

Alex Ferguson left him out of the 86 World Cup Scotland squad which seems absolutely mental.

Can't believe it's been 10 years since he retired from the BBC. He was one of the best pundits.

Funny story I read from his auto biography that he once fell out with Richard Keys back in the early days when Sky were showing Italian football before the Premier League came along. Hansen had said something about the Serie A game they just been watching, being one of the most boring game's he'd ever sat through. Apparently Keys didn't like his lack of enthusiasm for for job.

Willie Miller and Alex McLeish played together over 50 times for Scotland, won 3 Scottish Premier Leagues, and a load of cups together at Aberdeen, so you can see the point of having them play together for the national side. I think there was also a perception that Hansen wasn't fully committed to Scotland and prioritised Liverpool when it came to availability. Bit like Giggs with Man Utd and Wales withdrawals.

Hansen was pure class, though. I hope he's soon on the mend.

Fulham FC: It's the taking part that counts

But he should have still made the squad for 1986.A very strange decision indeed.

Ferguson talking about leaving Hansen out of the Mexico 86 squad. Looking back, it's a very Ferguson-like thing to do - pis s him off and you don't tend to get a second chance. Richard Gough and David Narey had both done really well for a strong Dundee Utd side, so Scotland weren't doing too badly for CBs who also played alongside each other at club level.

Scottish football was in really decent shape then - depressing to see how much it's been dominated by the Old Firm since then.

For the old boys on here, i noticed Rangers Winger Davie cooper missing from those squads. He was a brazil style player in a blue jersey. Very skilful.

I always rememberas a kid sitting in me nans east ham prefab house (late 1970's!) and cooper scoring wonder goals for rangers every saturday night on the scottish portion of 'match of the day', introduced by the bloke who looked like a ginger Klingon crossed with Arthur scargill, Archie Mcpherson.

Theres something i love about those old skool radge scottish wingers, John robertson , willie jonstone, cooper etc

John Robertson didn’t look anything like a professional athlete. Even with the ball at his feet, he never used to run more than ten paces at a time. What a magician though.

Although not Scottish, Kevin Mouse was a great winger when he started playing for Princes too. Dovetailed well with Hamish Balfour.

Apologies if it's already been said, but I read once that he had some kind of knee tendon deformity that meant he wasn't able to pass a ball more than 20 yards, which fortunately he never had to.

Gary Newbon: John Robertson

Brian Clough: Yeah, a very talented, highly skilled, UNBELIEVABLE outside left, he'll turn him inside out!

Hope he pulls through. He always looked a picture of health.
I think he was “protected “ by Liverpool in the same way Giggs was for Man Utd.
On the other end of the caps spectrum .
Phil Neville got forty plus caps for England.Another one of life’s mysteries.
