When's this Global Warming supposed to be happening? 20:43 - Jul 16 with 15405 views | GloryHunter | Weather's getting me down now. We were promised vineyards, sunflowers, siestas, the lot. I even had to turn the heating on last night - in July! And don't tell me it's all explained by the "man-made climate change" theory, because it bloody well isn't. The mad greenies told us 20 years ago we'd be frying by now, and they were WRONG. So how come we actually have a Government department of "Energy and CLIMATE CHANGE"? Has there ever before been a government department based on a complete myth - like the department for slaying dragons and unicorns, for example?

Well it's hardly fashionable any more but ironically, it is probably truer to say it is so next year. And the year after. And definitely the years from 2030 onwards. RFA

If you are a climate change refugee, like people in Alaska, Somalia and Bangladesh, you might well argue that the negatives most definitely outweigh the positives. In the case of an Alaskan settlement, the relocation cost was $380k. Per person. RFA

When's this Global Warming supposed to be happening? on 12:28 - Jul 17 by Spaghetti_Hoops | Global Warming threads just keep giving. That willful confusion of weather on a small island, extreme weather events and global climatic change. The misreputation of science and scientists harking back to mad professors in comic books. The regurgitation of all those denier theories long since disproved. All muddied by resentment about personal freedoms threatened and taxes imposed. Throw in some gung-ho attitudes on temperature and sea level rises just for the fun of it. Where's a doom-monger when you actually need one? |
Bullseye! Thank you! RFA

You could produce a cover version of the UB40 "One in ten" song but change the lyrics to "3 in 100". George Osborne could play Stylophone on it and his back bench mates could do harmony vocals. What's Pete Waterman's number? RFA

Relaxed and so cool I am glacial (groan), my friend Just doing a spot of mythbusting. This stuff is not trivial and it affects us all (example below: food prices up 20% between 1980-2008 as a result of global warming) so I try to help people see beyond the Daily Mail (recently busted on this very issue by the Press Complaints people, by the way) style posturing, obfuscation and bluster. http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2011/may/05/food-prices-global-warming RFA

As I said earlier, CC increases the likelihood of natural disasters. I have read the analysis and I have to be honest, climate scientists are saying it is not usually possible to say: "That disaster is due to CC". However, increasing the likelihood of a mega storm, as an example, is something we surely wish to avoid. RFA

Anyone who thinks the Vikings were reacting to rising sea levels knows absolutely eff all about the Vikings. There isn't the single tiniest whiff of evidence from the period to suggest they did anything of the sort but there's tons of evidence they were reacting to political changes in Scandinavia, including explicit statements to that affect by numerous Old Norse sources.

I know plenty about the Vikings as it goes but don't let that stop you yet again spouting venomous crap at every little point I and others make that you decide to disagree with. There is ample evidence to support rising sea levels and a loss of land but I have no intentions of even bothering discussing that with you as you apparently know everything, or so you believe. This was but one period I mentioned. I'm sure all of them were caused by carbon emissions, even the ones 125,000 years ago. Believe what you want and afford others the decency of doing the same. As for half wit. Go fcuk yourself. Predicted you'd get insulting back at the beginning of this thread. p.s. I've got an anti tiger stone outside my front door. Been there 2 years and I haven't seen a single tiger. It works then. Same logic. [Post edited 1 Jan 1970 1:00]

You can have your opinion on any subject you want. You can believe the world's flat for all I care. Don't expect me to give one for it unless you can justify it. There's not a single contemporary source that says Vikings even noticed rising sea levels and plenty of evidence of changes in the political composition of Scandinavian society. If you knew anything about Vikings you might quote me an original source or discuss, for example, Hedeager on Early Iron Age Societies. I spent three years at university reading this stuff but no doubt it was all a plot by warmists infiltrating the Scandinavian studies department As for your global warming arguments, if you don't understand how a chain of logic works I'm not going to teach you.
When's this Global Warming supposed to be happening? on 20:38 - Jul 17 with 979 views | Marshman | The time for debate about whether climate change is happening is long gone. Of course human emissions are changing the climate and of course lots of people are making a fortune out of it and have an interest in making it sound worse than it is. The fact people are exploiting it doesn't make it less true. At the risk of sounding gloomy however it's one of the lesser human caused global environmental catastrophes facing us. The eye wateringly rapid degredation of the worlds ecosystems and biodiversity loss in the last few decades will be a greater loss to the human race in the long term. I have sympathy with those with their heads in the sand over this stuff. It's to hideous to really take in properly and I try not to think about it too much myself. Anyway it's nothing a good signing won't put right. Any news on that other Korean?

When's this Global Warming supposed to be happening? on 22:24 - Jul 17 with 958 views | TW_R | Interesting debate. I think everyone agrees that the climate changes. Some believe it's cyclical and some believe it's man-made. What I do know is the compliance costs of the Kyoto protocol is conservatively estimated at $150 billion a year. In other words it costs roughly $100,000 to “prevent” just one-billionth of a degree of warming. So for just $100 trillion, the average global temperature could theoretically be lowered by 1 degree C. Both global warming skeptics and advocates agree that the potential amount of warming that hypothetically might be avoided through Kyoto Protocol implementation is roughly 0.07 degrees centigrade by the year 2050. So we could carry on spending billions of dollars a year to attempt to do something that may or may not change future temperatures by a very small amount or we could spend that money on removing 3rd world starvation, alleviating poverty, allowing every child in the world the education they deserve etc. In other words, fix what's wrong now, not what might hypothetically happen in 50 years time.

When's this Global Warming supposed to be happening? on 23:44 - Jul 17 with 940 views | TGRRRSSS | We're still technically coming out of the ice age I've been informed so presumably it was much much colder x number of thousand years ago which had nothing to do with us now or whats happened basically in the last 150 years or so. However I also am led to believe we've had far hotter weather patterns than currently,Australia (was 2,000 years ago) about on average 3c hotter than it gets now which made it even more amazing the aborigines survived as they did, I read that in Aus I think a few years ago when I was there.
When's this Global Warming supposed to be happening? on 00:24 - Jul 18 with 930 views | zicoshoops | Our Planet is currently in an Ice Age, and has been for the past 2.4 Million years. During this time, roughly every 10,000 years, there is a cycle whereby Ice spreads from the Poles then retreats again. During the last cycle, the Ice was at least a mile thick as far south as Hampstead. The issue is not so much what we are doing to damage the Planet, because ultimately it will survive regardless of what we do. The issue, is will we, as Human Beings create conditions whereby our species can survive. In the History of our Planet, time wise, we have been here for less than the blink of an eye. Yet we have done more damage than every species before us combined. The sooner our species becomes extinct, the better it will be for our Planet. Hopefully the next dominent species will show our Planet (and each other) much more respect than we have. While we may think we deserve our right to inhabit this Planet....... I doubt very much whether the Earth deserves us.
When's this Global Warming supposed to be happening? on 01:51 - Jul 18 with 916 views | John | The animals will tell you whats really going on, unlike us they are not insulated from the environment and have to respond if it changes. Over the last 30 years, from personal experience, and from records going back a century, everything that can walk, crawl, fly, hop or swim, is moving North, and North for a reason, its getting hotter. That fact is a done deal, why it might be happening, maybe there's a small amount of debate to be had. Climate change has always happened and is perfectly normal, it's the rate that concerns me, and puts me firmly in the anthropogenic camp. [Post edited 1 Jan 1970 1:00]

I can not be bothered to enter into a long debate with you because your mind is closed. You have gulped down every little spoonful that Greenpeace have fed you. Be as patronising as you like, it doesn't bother me one iota, fact is you are wrong. That's all. You can have this for free In AD 1000, the Earth was experiencing an episode of climate warming similar to that of the present day. Temperatures in many parts of the world seem to have risen by at least two or three degrees Fahrenheit. Although the scale of this "global warming" may seem small, its effects on human societies were profound. In Europe, several centuries of long hot summers led to an almost unbroken string of good harvests, and both urban and rural populations began to grow. These centuries are known as the Medieval Warm Period. One of the more dramatic consequences of the Medieval Warm Period was the expansion of Viking settlements in the North Atlantic. From their Icelandic base (established in AD 870), the Norse people began to move west and north to Greenland, Canada, and eventually above the Arctic Circle. http://rutgerspress.rutgers.edu/Author/Hoffecker_Prehistory/excerpt.html As for the rest of your "points", you can't justify a single one of them, they are all supposition backed by an agenda. Thanks for the offer of not teaching me by the way, that's actually very nice of you, at my stage of life I have no interest in being preached to by someone so limited. Edit: On further reflection let's just agree to disagree, I have no desire to have this turn into a slanging match. Our opinions differ wildly, let's leave it at that. Peace. The trouble is, dealing with the impact of CC/GC will inevitably involve taxation. Who pays for flood defences? We do. I don't have figures to hand for the UK but the cost of protecting the US coastline has been estimated at $155bn. Here, it has already been determined that some areas are at great risk of sea level rise (and the compounding effect of more powerful storms), for example the South Wales coast (with all its heavy industry). Well some of them will be statistical anomalies, you are right. The trouble is that if you increase the temperature of the sea, you add more energy to it. More energy means more violent storms. RFA
