It may well have increased by 60%, but the problems run much deeper and go back a lot further than Khan’s tenure in post and it’s not just a policing side.

Police Officer numbers have tumbled since 2009 and policing has experienced huge cuts, while numbers are now increasing after Boris has pumped more money in they are still below where they were in 2009. The new cops will all be green and need years to get up to speed. The Home Office dictate what happens in policing the same as they do with sentencing in criminal courts, judges and magistrates apply the guidelines they are given, if you want to incarcerate more people you need more places in jails. Stop and Search is controversial, cops using it run the risk of being demonised as racist.

This is not just a policing issue, it’s an issue for society. Lots of this is gang related, kids are growing up in sinkhole estates, underachieve in school, don’t have a stable family environment, don’t have role models to guide the, font have a prospect of a job, won’t get on the housing ladder and to top that they are surrounded by mass consumerism when there is pressure for branded products etc which they will never be able to afford.

Sadly, I suspect it’s going to get a lot worse before it gets better, if you have money London is great, if you don’t it can be unpleasant.

It's not a case of having extra police, it's about not cutting their numbers in the first place.

Guess who's the Mayor today and has been for the past 6 years , Police numbers in London had dropped and continued to do so from the start of Khans tenure and guess who's responsible for providing the funds .
The Mayor of London sets the budget and is responsible for making London a better place for everyone who visits, lives or works in the city.

The people who commit these offences must be held responsible for their actions and they need to be made examples of, but you are right blaming it on someone else is the default position in our society, hardly anyone - particularly politicians will accept responsibility and they are quick enough to apportion blame elsewhere or avoid the issue completely.

A couple of errors in your post, Khan’s been mayor since 2016 which is 5 years and not 6. Police numbers in England and Wales started dropping in 2010 and by 2019 there were 20,600 less, the numbers have increased by about 6,000 since then on account of Boris initiative, but it’s still about 10,000 less than when Cameron came in to power.

Khan sets the budget, but the bulk of police funding in England and Wales comes from central government, it’s something like 75% -80% Home Office funded and the rest is raised from the local policing precept. If the government cut the central grants (which they had been doing) police numbers have to be cut.

Times have changed and society is different. When I was a kid we hardly ever saw the police, we’d play football in the park and apart from a bit of hedge hoping and ringing a doorbell and running off we’d keep our heads down, there’d be a scrap or two, but no knives etc. If we saw the village bobby, we’d stay out of his way.

Dealing with the knife crime problem isn’t going to be easy for some of reasons I outlined earlier - if it was simple it’d would have been already. There has to be a political will to do it and support for the police which will invariably have to use the very “controversial” stop and search powers. To do that the police need to have staff on the ground pro actively targeting these offenders, by using specialist teams of staff and also using community officers to build up intelligence pictures. Part of the issue with stop search is that too many innocent people are being searched so to avoid that it needs to be more targeted. If the police haven’t got the staff to deal with calls from the public etc then it’s unlikely they’re going to have the time to drive around just looking for people who could be carrying knives search. Knife crime is a priority, but so is locking up terrorists, internet child porn sex offenders, rapists etc and when numbers are falling something would have to give.

There are government departments who would love to see the suggestions.

The streets are a different place. Hell, they were hugely different in London compared to Swansea back in the early 80's.

Who knows if the governments since 1980 have been part of the problem with the policies or if it would be like this anyway.
