Illegal immigrants moved to Penally army camp on 19:34 - Sep 23 by Neath_Jack | Point of order, they are asylum seekers, not illegal immigrants. The slight difference in terminology, makes a huge difference. |
Accepted, they are asylum seekers. The rest stands.

I would have thought, if a person enters another country illegally, that would automatically make them "Illegal immigrants"

The Eastern Europeans.Probably a few others. The world is a small place now, so people will keep arriving, and people will depart our shores. So be it.

Officially they are asylum seekers, that's what the government are calling them. If they do a runner from this camp, then they'll be illegals!

No, they are and always will be illegal immigrants, many of whom have failed in seeking asylum in Europe

They’ve also used illegal means to get here, spending a lot of money funding the services of criminal gangs and international people smugglers.

Why not? After all they are dealing with a country that is threatening a 'no deal' arrangement with them. Two can play that game. No deal with France? "Pierre arrange the boats here come 5000 more." Migrants will become a political play thing. Give me the money or I open the gates. Its called the 'Erdogan gambit'.

So its safer to 'help' the boat travel 75% of the way than to turn them round and travel 25% of the journey. Maybe safer to get them off the boat and arrest the ones sailing it.

But we are always told that migration is fantastic, they are all doctors and neurosurgeons and they benefit the economy massively, so why aren’t France trying to do everything they can to hold on to their considerable skills themselves?

As they had already set off from France to England, and they were in France illegally too, i guess so. People seem to think these are the obligation of France, but France has no more obligation to them than we have. They come here to seek asylum , and it's perfectly legal to do so.If it's refused then they have to go back, but not to France as France doesn't want them either

Illegal immigrants are the ones who sneak into a Country and lives there without becoming official. Assylum seekers are people who get into a Country legally or illegally who imediately requests assylum. The assylum seekers are a mixture, its sorting these out as an issue. Some a genuine refugees escaping war and some are from a country where their beliefs make them targets and their lives are in danger, these ones need help assistance. The rest are economic migrants, escaping poor countries with little prospect. I'm sure we all understand their desire to improve themselves, Countries cannot take in endless economic migrants. Amongst all these are the odd undesirable elements, who will look to cause harm in the Country. A big issue for me with the refugees is that they have crossed numerous 'safe' countries and spent a lot of money to get to Britain. The issue is an international one and it should be handled internationally, the problem is the UN is useless. The refugees should not travel across Europe, there should be an organised method to handle them, to distribute them fairly to safe countries, with all countries taking part of the load.

I know all that but still, they are human beings and deserve fair and respectful treatment, until they don't!! If you catch my drift? My position has been that we should stop ripping these other countries apart and making it so that many young people give up and head west to the lands of milk and honey, which, all to often are nowhere near that misguided perception. Asylum seekers, illegal immigrants or refugess, their home country is usually in a crap state (for many reasons incuding western interference) so maybe it's time we learned our lessons? Otherwise millions of people will continue trying to find somewhere better to live, legally or otherwise!

Its going to take years and will be complex but I agree with what you say. The long term solution is to help their home countries improve enough so they won't want to leave or even return and do this without interfering with their sovereinty. Unfortunately most of the Western World are greedy and don;t do anything without a big financial benefit.

We only get a tiny proportion who come here compared to other countries in the middle east and in Europe. Why they come here i don't know. Our benefit system is no better than many in Europe. That's assuming they come here for benefits , when i fact they want to work and find new lives.I can only assume they have family or friends hear and speak English

Apparently the UK doesn't take in anywhere near its fair share (you might be interested to know apparently Canada takes in way more than its fair share).

Really well explained. If your personal definition strays from this one, then it's your definition not THE definition. As Trampie says, taking our fair share would see numbers rise and not fall.

The closer countries maybe dont have the funds to look after all the displaced. The richer nations could fix that.
