Chadli confirms Swansea snub 09:47 - Feb 14 with 3263 viewsParlay

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Nacer Chadli has confirmed that he snubbed the opportunity to join Swansea City on loan in January.

Sky Sports revealed on deadline day that the Swans had made an approach for the Belgian winger.

They believed there was a deal to be done as Chadli had struggled to settle at White Hart Lane following a summer switch from FC Twente, and had World Cup participation to think about.

The 24-year-old admits he considered taking in a spell elsewhere, following a frustrating time in north London, but ultimately decided to stay put and prove his worth to new boss Tim Sherwood.

Chadli said in the Daily Mirror: "It was a possibility, but it is in the past.

"I had to make a decision and my decision was to stay. Everything was not clear so I wanted to stay at Tottenham and play for my club. I have signed for five years and I'm happy.

"When I came to Spurs, I knew I wasn't going to play in every game as we have 60 matches in a season.

"I came and got injured, played, got injured again and so I haven't played as much as I have wanted, but we have a big squad with a lot of good players and we have to compete with each other. I have to work hard in training and show it when I play."

Chadli was among the goals on Wednesday as Tottenham hammered Newcastle United 4-0 at St James' Park.

That result has kept them just three points adrift of the UEFA Champions League places and seven off top spot.

On Spurs' ambitions, Chadli added: "We have to keep playing like we did at Newcastle and keep going in every game for 100 per cent to get the three points. With five games to go, we will see where we are.

"We are not looking to go above Chelsea. We are looking at Liverpool, who are directly above us and we have to go there in a few weeks, so that will be a big examination.

"We are within touching distance of the top. We have had a good week, but in one week everything can happen, everything can change.

"We can be up or we can be down, so we have to stay alert and play our game like we did at Newcastle, although I would say everything is possible this season.

"It is a very different league this season, because a lot of teams are taking points off each other and are playing at around the same level."

No complaints. Would only ever want players playing for the team unless they wanted too.

Why do they always call it a snub, the guy wanted to stick with his side.

If he had said "Swansea City, you must be joking aint going to that shit hole" now that would be a snub.,

At least it confirms Emnes wasn't our only/first choice in January.

We now know for sure that the club attempted to sign Tom Ince and Nacer Chadli. Ince was obviously playing the field and got more money out of Crystal Palace, while Chadli turned us down.

Was it also confirmed that we were after Pilkington? Makes a mockery of claims that we showed no ambition in the transfer window.

You know, Hobbes, some days even my lucky rocket ship underpants don't help.

This seems to me to be compatible with what the agent said on deadline day. It is incompatible with the story leaked to Sky at the Liberty, on the day after Laudrup's sacking, about his refusal to meet Ince and initial unwillingness to sign Chadli and Holtby when deals were offered. I have always doubted the Chadli and Ince stories, and wonder if we will ever find out about Holtby.

Who is the insider in the club who kept telling porkies about Laudrup? Is it possible that the same person could undermine the new management team in future?

It's far from incompatible with the comments after Laudrup's sacking. All he says was that it wasn't clear. That would seem to imply he was being mucked around a little.

I think the headline and story would have been a lot different if Laudrup had "snubbed" Chadli by refusing to talk to him...

I think I posted this but the best one I read somewhere was a fella saying how disgusting it was that Laudrup had refused to meet Ince especially after he'd driven down and put a deposit on a house.

Innit.

Ince pictured going to look at a club flat in the Marina as temporary accomodation for 14 weeks = putting a deposit on a house.

In the two hours he was down here he proposed marriage to a local girl as well. She's devastated. Obviously.

I thought that Laudrup "dithered" over the signing of Holtby and Chadli and that's why we missed out on them.

That would tie in with "things were not clear so I decided to stay at Tottenham."

"Snub"?! Bloke decides to stay with current employer to prove his worth to new manager. A very light news day at Sky!

Or "no one would guarantee that I'd play whenever I wanted". Who knows, who cares. Now he's actually scored a goal, the press will have him down as a world beater anyway and so will be interested in the drivel he spouts for a week or so.

Personally, I've not seen anything from him in the games I've seen him play apart from that one shot that convinces me he'd suit us better than what we have, and he wouldn't sit on the bench happily. so maybe, just maybe, by 'not making things clear' it was Swansea that 'snubbed' him.

Quite. Rather obvious I thought.

If the rumours that Chadli would only come here if playing more central, then not sure we could have accommodated him anyway.

I don't buy Uxbridge's argument about the meaning of 'not clear'. The Sky story of last week was that Laudrup had been offered Chadli and Holtby, but initially turned them down and then a few days later changed his mind by which time they were no longer available. If that meant anything it implied that the players were actually available in the sense that they were willing to come to Swansea. Nothing in the story about the agent's comments on deadline day or in the OP story here makes me think that is true. If the 'offer' declined by Laudrup was simply to explore whether Chadli might be interested after Spurs said this was a possibility, then that story is much less damaging to our ex-manager than the idea that he torpedoed a de facto deal that just needed his approval. The Sky story was leaked for a purpose and, just as the bit about Ince was dishonest, I think that almost certainly also applied to the claim about Chadli's availability.
