AWARDS NIGHT CANCELLED on 17:57 - Mar 21 by judd

We hadn't played Spurs in October, Jimmy.

It was obviously planned prior to the October meeting with the Trust.

I very much doubt the Gala dinner was intended as a one-off to mark whatever anniversaries.

The awards night is not the only target for change within the club in order to maximise revenue streams, in my opinion. By maximise revenue streams, I of course mean encouraging the spending of money on ale not in our own pub but off site altogether.

I wonder what other little gems the club have asked the trust to keep stum on ,i have to feel sorry for the trust bods because doing the perceived right thing for the club is giving them some serious grief.Their job to liaise with the club directors seems a poisoned chalice at the moment ,nobody knows what scheme is going to be drawn up.

The club has every right to issue a statement like that. They're trying to enhance the club's reputation by arranging a fantastic evening and the "working classes" throw their toys out of the pram and ruin it for people like me who were ready to attend.
Also perhaps some of us like having an evening where we can unwind without kids being there. They'd have got their family fin day with the reserves and a bouncy castle and maybe a spot of face painting with Desmond the Dragon so what's the problem?
The trust should do the right thing and help get this event back on

You’re proper shit at this, take it from an experienced pro. Feel free to PM if you need any tips.

Aye I know. What I meant was, had the Spurs situation not happened, I reckon there's a chance it would have long been scrapped. After all, wasn't it in part meant to be a celebration of us getting to Wembley or have I dreamt that?

I think the intention was that it would always go ahead even if we'd got beaten by Slough.

I think whoever thought of it badly underestimated the strength of feeling about how the change would be received by plebs such as I.

Because the club want to present an image of professionalism as oppose to an awards do in a working mans club setting like the Radcliffe. Like I said the club have done worst this season. Why didn’t the supporters trust issue a statement when Hill told fans not to bother turning up. It’s a few people in a clique who fear change and see themselves as something special when they aren’t. Why bring class into it? Total load of bollocks. Moaning about sixty five quid as though it’s a huge sum of money. I feel sorry for some of your kids, the poor feckers must be on beans and toast every night.

I don't see why a 'posher' event at the Town Hall couldn't have been arranged as well as the usual end of season awards. It could have been the week before the end of the season. Anyway that message and the whole approach from the club absolutely stinks and makes me very worried about the future of our club. Add that to the shocking performance last night and the 'untouchable' Keith Hill, I feel pretty miserable about everything Dale at the moment.

https://www.rochdaleafc.co.uk/news/2018/march/statement-gala-dinner_cancellation

We’ve been very disappointed with the negativity shown towards the Gala Dinner and Awards Night, which was announced earlier this week.

The decision to hold such an event was taken to allow us to operate in a professional manner, in line with other EFL clubs, and to continue our progression off the pitch.

With immediate effect, the event has been cancelled. Those who have already purchased tickets will be contacted in due course regarding a refund.

The statement of cancellation shows clearly that the club - or someone at the club - has not listened to or understood what has actually been said.

I am sure that no-one objects to the club operating in a professional manner, but the cack handed way they went about this - and how they responded to the rightly expressed concerns - show the club operating in anything but a professional manner.

To unilaterally dump the fans - ie, the paying customers - traditional end of season event, despite the wise words of caution expressed by the Supporters Trust who are there to represent the supporters of the club and who hold the best interest of the club close to their hearts, is not very professional. To mis-appropriate other people's property - ie the trophies - and deny their right of access to that property is not very professional.

To then dump the shiny new event and post a sulky message blaming everyone except themself / themselves is not very professional and shows a distinct lack of self awareness. I wouldn't/couldn't have gone this year, but wouldn't necessarily rule out going to a similar-ish event in the future.

The simple solution would have been to hold two events - the traditional post match with fans award - which I (perhaps naively) suspect takes very little in the way of organising; and a Gala Dinner with directors and sponsors awards - after all, anyone who can find a grands worth of loose change (+VAT, but the corporate sponsors would probably find a way to get that back) to sponsor a table can find another few quid for a trophy to hand over. Instead, in cancelling the event the way they have only winds everyone up again - not very professional - and more worryingly presents a very unprofessional appearance to the sponsors, some of whom might have been tempted to invest further in our club. So, the club have managed to achieve a lose - lose situation, upsetting their paying customers and possibly dissuading potential investors.

SMAC will shortly be retrieving our trophy, as we do every year, to take down to the engravers to have our 2017/18 POTS' name put on it. We will then present it ... hopefully at a traditional end of season event - if it happens. If it doesn't, we'll arrange something for ourselves.

Now all this has, hopefully, blown over, we can get down to serious business - the Trust's curry night and SMAC's forthcoming matchball sponsorship. And maybe a football match or two!

Up the Dale.

You also have to consider the waste of man or women hours that have been spunked on this. Arranging booking of hall, planning, arrangement re Geoff, time that could be used productivity.

I expect this has been done by a director and russ and the chairman has vetoed it without knowledge it was being launched, or I really hope so. I expect the message on the site is from russ, who will no doubt have put effort into arranging this on the day so of director and he is very irritated at wasting his time.

Can see a director and russ leaving at the end of the season. Don’t think half the cock ups of this season would have happened had Andrew Kelly still been on the board ( I believe he no longer is ).

Anyway great post above. Very well said

Why not have 2 events an awards night for the working class and children and a Gala dinner for the business men and women of this fine town.

Totally agree.

Pretty well summed it up Smaclad I can only add that among the lunacy of the on again off again Gala event and the cringe worthiness and petulance shown in the club statement in regards to its cancellation can you confirm, cause I'm struggling to believe it, that the Club had the neck to ask you for 1000 quid to sponsor and present your own trophy?

I’m from fook all me pal. I don’t do personal but if you want to go there let’s. I own a comfortable car, a comfortable home and I’ve got a decent job. But everything I’ve got I’ve earned and put work in to get where I am. So I’ll say it again sixty five quid isn’t that much considering its a three course meal and a night out. You would spend as much in an away trip to the likes of Bradford or Macc as you will see next season.

Statements weren't issued on the Hill incident because we weren't contacted by a significant number of members with regards to those. On this, we were, and many Trust members were contacted individually over and over again on Monday evening with regards to this.

We offered a statement earlier in the season when the club announced that the Pearl Street Stand was being closed for the Bromley game. I think I'm right in saying that from the Trust committee, all but one would have remained unaffected by this decision but having received complaints from members, it was acted upon.

Similarly, when we meet with the Directors, the questions aren't our questions (tho some are) and there's no filtering taking place, they are the questions from members.

As you probably know I dont get good favour from many on here for my forthright views , but on this matter I agree with the loyal fans . There could of been two events held and marketed in the correct manner , but Billy BIg Balls wants it his own way , he knows best stuff you lot.
I know from talking to many friends who are not on this forum , that the vast groundswell of opinion was totally against such a Gala event with the exclusion of kids , and increased price , but the arrogance to expect sponsorship of something they dont own was unbelievable.
