The truth is that the Maidan revolution happened ater the corrupt President Yanukovych walked away from a deal with the EU to sign up with Putin.

A lot will depend on how the allies support for Ukraine pans out of the coming months, if the Republicans win in the US elections and decide to cut Ukraine adrift, then Putin will no doubt finish the job. The US have to tread a careful path, China will be watching and if Putin is successful the Chinese may try it on with Taiwan.
China is a massive industrial powerhouse and its influence is expanding. The US, for so long the biggest economy is coming under pressure from China who seek to rival them.
