Tommy Smith 19:09 - Jul 13 with 3343 viewsbosh67

Must be one of the unluckiest players we've ever had. Been fairly shabbily treated and not going on the tour. Good player who's never let us down and scored some important goals. Feel sorry for him, he's one of the good guys and a useful squad player I thought.

Never knowingly right.

Agree he's never let us down but on the other hand he's never done much more over and above that. Is that enough to get a place in the 25 man squad bearing in mind the strikers we now have?
Not in my opinion

At his age and with his attitude he needs and deserves to be playing. He's never let us down and would do a great job for any Championship side.

If you saw the drum he lived in,trust me you wouldn't feel sorry.
I also like him for his honesty and effort but its no surprise considering he's been let go by every club he's been promoted with. He's a talented player but lacks the pace and power for the premiere league.

He never quite seemed to fit in for some reason. As you say, a good player, but I wonder if the problem has been that in the areas where he operates he is not first choice? Even in our Championship promotion season he was never an automatic starter.

I agree completely with your premise. He is a good player with a lot to offer but has tended to be overshadowed by very good and, more recently, great players that have come along that fulfil the same role as him in the team -- the free roaming offensive-minded midfielder. Just as he was establishing himself Adel came along and blew everyone away. Its not a negative reflection on him that he can't compete with Taarabt for a team place, there aren't many who can. So in that respect, you are spot on. Very unlucky.

Having said that, there is very little chance that he will get to play next year. Like SWP and Ephraim, there are simply too many people ahead of him in line now. I like the way he plays -- he can be a joy to watch. That goal against Wigan was just the latest example of what he can do. He needs a new team where he can demonstrate his talent and make the kind of impact he deserves.

I agree with the OP. Excellent player, very unlucky not to have had more starts for us. Personally responsible for at least two of the points that kept us up. Deserves better.

He's a decent player but he's not in the mould of the team Hughes is building and the type of player he wants for the style of play he wants to play i.e pace, power, or playmaker.

Another one of those players who probably would have faired better if he had stuck to being a 2nd striker rather than becoming a jack of all trades.

He's mostly done well for us when he's been called on, especially in the Championship. But he's also looked out of his depth quite a bit this season (Liverpool away for example).
But I'll remember him mostly for several vital goals, particularly the one away at Watford, the winner away at Everton and that cracker he scored this season v Wigan. Very surprised that goal didn't get more mentions in May when we were discussing best goals of the season.
Overall, it's thanks for the memories Tommy, hope you do well at a new club.

The last minute penalty at Pompey stands out for me, he had some bottle to take and score that.
We were bricking It behind the goal that night.

Adel "came along" long before Tommy Smith.

Looking at it another way, if Smith isn't part of the plans would he want to be stuck out in Malaysia for a week when he could be here talking to other clubs? I know for a fact his name has been circulated among Championship sides so presumably there are some talks in the offing somewhere.

Throughout his career he's proven to be a player that's a cut above most in the Championship, but not quite good enough for the Premiership. He's done a sound job for us, and would be handy to have around as cover, but for him it's probably right he moves on now.

Spot on Ted, taking that penalty took some nerve. Intelligent bloke and a clever player, very consistent as well. Very good in the Championship, not quite the pace for the PL. Will find another Club no problem, good luck to him and thanks for his important contributions last season.

Adel "came along" long before Tommy Smith.

When I said "came along and blew everyone else away" I meant established himself as the dominant player in the Division. In his first couple of spells with us on loan from Spurs, Adel was good, but not nearly as dominant. In the 2010 off-season, when Tommy was signed, it wasn't at all clear that Adel would be back. If you remember, Warnock pulled off the signing right at the end of the summer, Adel became captain, Warnock fashioned the side around Adel and he never looked back. It just never left much room for Tommy.

I've got a lot of time for Tommy but it's the correct decision. I'm afraid it's the story of his career. One of those select band of players who are too good for the championship but not quite good enough to feature regularly in the Premier League. I'll be very surprised if he doesn't get a few offers this summer.

Agree with the op and he has been v unlucky. I say unlucky because against everton he was superb but never got a looking after that. Before xmas imo the squad was pretty average and he was v unlucky not 2 be starting. A well spoken guy who also has a brain on the pitch as well as off it. Always made the right pass and did have more quality than given credit 4. We have moved on now but he really deserves a starting place in a top championship side like blackburn or bolton and my best wishes go out 2 the lad, top man

A bright, intelligent player who deserved more chances.

If for nothing else deserves to be remembered for clinching promotion at Watford.

I like him as a player, but have always been concerned by his lack of pace and sometimes mobility. But he's a clever player and he disguises his deficiencies well, so is useful in that sense and has always had the technical ability.

But I don't think he's actually ever really had a run in the side and made a position his own, and much like Akos Buzsaky, I think he needs to be playing regularly and he's not going to find that here.

Like Clive, I think his main problem is he's one of those players that's clearly a top Championship player but has never really been able to make the transition to the Premier League. I often wonder why that is, and a lot of the time, I think it's also because he never got a real chance or run in the side to show it.

He's another player who is going to leave with nothing but best wishes from every Rangers fan: the goal that won us the Championship, plus the goal that got our first away win in the Prem with a truly shite team, plus a cracking winner against Wigan that kept us up.

Never moaned, never let us down, and he'll be a fine signing for someone. A deceptively good finisher.

It's nice that we're waving goodbye to players like Kenny, Buzz and Smith with goodwill. For most of the past 10 years we've been chasing them out with pitchforks

His goal v Forest in the championship was a cracker and calmed a few nerves on that day.

Best of luck to him

Tommy Smith wasn't signed in the close season of 2010-11, he was signed right on the last knockings of the August transfer window.

If you remember, his registration wasn't quite secured by the deadline so we had to loan him from Portsmouth until we could finally sign him permanently in the January.
