Mansion Tax 19:40 - Mar 28 with 9962 viewsunion_jack

Not sure how much sympathy i will get here, but Labour's proposal of a mansion tax is a cheap shot IMO.

Have they not heard of 'asset rich, cash poor?'

Indeed there are such people and I hope they are dealt with sympathetically. Unlike the the asset poor and cash poor who have been hammered by the Tories.

That's the point. There'll be no sympathy. To keep administration costs down it will be applied universally.

I get what you are saying about the other group.

Sounds like something a bunch of earnest sixth formers would come up with after a few cans of 'Bow and some skunk.

Votes for 16 year olds is another cracker. F*ck me gently.

Let's be honest, it's a vote catcher. Appeal to the porer by shoeing they are fleecing the 'rich'. However, those with valuable property are not necessarily rich. In fact, quite the opposite outside of London - and even then!

What immediately struck me as unfair about the proposal is that people have little control over the value of their home. Take for instance an elderly couple who have lived in the same house for sixty years that just happens to be in a part of east London undergoing a process of gentrification. Chances are their house value will have sky-rocketed and could land them with monthly bills they are ill-prepared to meet.

It's Students Union politics with jealousy and bitterness at the root of it.

It's Socialist politics. Jealousy and bitterness are essential factors.

As opposed to Tory policies where demonising the less fortunate and trite cliches about socialism are all the rage? Most of the bitterness in British politics lies on the right who remain convinced that everyone on benefits is taking the piss.

The mansion tax is fine by me. It's symbolic and will affect few. I'm not about to shed tears for the asset rich/cash poor. As Private Partz has already pointed out, no ne has given a sh*t about the cash poor/asset poor over this past five years. So I'm not about to shed any tears for anyone who may be eligible to pay this gimmicky tax

I'd also extend the franchise to 16 year olds. If you want up engage kids in their own futures, let them have a say.

Sixteen's too young, Clase. Most at that age haven't experienced the working world, haven't seen enough of life to attain informed opinion.

...of course the same could be said of some far older, I suppose.

As opposed to the Socialist policies whereby 'anyone earning more than me is a theiving b@stard and must be taxed to the hilt so they can pay for everyone elses shortcomings'.

The mansion tax willl affect more than a few.

And most 16 yr olds cant even tie their own shoelaces. Give them a vote? Theyll think Simon fcking Cowell is up for election.

Your first sentence says more about your world view than it does about modern "socialism". Such as it is these days.

I doubt it. Socialism is and always has been about fair distribution of wealth. I doubt you object to that principle. Modern socialism for me at least is trying to raise that principle above the low denomimator that is modern political discourse.

I don't object to that principle in the slightest, Clase. In fact I'm prepared to bet I've probably got more of the classic tracts of Distributism sat here on my bookshelves than the rest of the board put together but that, to my and countless other minds, isn't what Socialism is about. It has never been about social justice or any of the other wishfully thought claims made on its behalf. It's a totalitarian ideology that seeks to replace freedom of thought, conscience and action with the drudgery of ant-heap collectivism.

I doubt you'd have enjoyed life very much behind the old iron curtain. You like arguing too much. The People's Commissars would have taken a dim view of that, Comrade...

Sorry A I think that's a slightly biased view, bitterness comes from both end s of the political spectrum. Also 16yr olds deciding on the future? Some will be switched on but many ( I think most) will either not vote or just follow the views of parents

There is no such thing as a bedroom tax. There is however an end to people receiving a rent subsidy for a larger property than they need.

Happy to clear that up for you.
