It drains senior management time and our cash. We need Sports Republic to be fully focused on Southampton, not least with Jason Wilcox not having been replaced. We are also signing players and then loaning them to Goztepe. There is not a cat in hell’s chance that Goztepe can afford their wages in full, so we are effectively paying out in the hope that these players are somehow going to improve playing in an inferior League. If we aren’t going to make use of Onuachu after he had a prolific season in Turkey, then what is the point of having any of our players in Turkey? It is clearly a schmuck League.

Are you for real? We signed a keeper that the Turkish club could never afford , then loan him to them for 3 years

Where does it drain cash, we got Lis on a free transfer, a then 25 year old his wages at his former club in Turkey would not have been high. We get him in loan him to Troyes for a season, possibly for a loan fee and they cover his wages, likewise we then loan him to Goztepe where he establishes himself and goes on loan again. In the meantime his value has risen to £2 million, next summer we will probably sell him for that sort of figure perhaps more. So the deal has cost us effectively nothing, on the other hand he might become a good back up keeper. This is the way many Premier League clubs do business these days, i suspect for accounting purposes. Goztepe are a reasonable sized club now back in the Turkish Super League, they can easily cover Lis's wages and more, plus no haggling. Onuachu succeeded in Turkey because they play to his strengths, he doesn't fit our style of play, its nothing to do with the standard of their league

As i said below Im not sure that you have done your research, Lis came on a free transfer from a Turkish club, we would not be doubling his wages when he came, he would be getting paid roughly the same as he was on perhaps less. Lis spent a season on loan at Troyes so is not doing 3 years at Goztepe,

Who the bothering heck is going to pay £2 million for Lis? Surely if that was his value, we would sell him now. He is never going to be worth more than that if he isn’t currently good enough to displace either McCarthy or Lumley. What about the Japanese player Matsuki and the Brazilian guy Juan? We are going to be subsidising their wages. They would never have signed for us if they were going to be paid the wages that Goztepe can afford to pay.

Even if he is on on the same as the club before we were losing £3000 a week last season as apparently Goztepe were giving him £4,900 so presumably we were making up the shortfall. Admittedly over a year that’s only £150k lost. I am only finding his value to be €1.6m up by €400k from when we signed him. I’m not sure how profitable exercise this is turning out to be. Seems like our club has not progressed since SR bought us (coming back up doesn’t count as we went down) but has allowed Goztepe to progress. Doesn’t seem to have harmed us too badly as admittedly the numbers are small but at the same time rather than having an owner that is allowing us to stagnate and then turn smaller group clubs into good investments using our books to get round FFP I would rather have an owner that wanted us to push on and was solely focussed on such. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Exactly! The figures are always so hypothetical, where are the people biting our hand off for Onuachu whom is valued at €13m.
Southampton Goalkeeper Loan Deal Agreed on 07:50 - Aug 9 with 1832 views | City_boy | At least the headline of this thread got my attention. I thought we had signed a new keeper and was hoping it was Ramsdale. I can only assume, now we have let Lis go, there must be somebody lined up. Saints always have a surprise when it comes to transfers, but the lack of talk (even rumours) about a new keeper is worrying. Every outfield player in Europe seems to be linked with us in all the rumour/speculation sites, but not a single goalkeeper (other than snippets about Ramsdale). Whilst I think the back line has been strengthened, McCarthy will be a liability in the Premiership, and we can not afford to gift teams goals with school-boy errors. [Post edited 9 Aug 7:52]

Ok 2 years at Goztepe not 3. If we cant flog him this summer we wont next year when hes moved into his final year of his contract. I have no idea what hes on but im sure we would of ended up subsidizing his wage. Goztepe had a turn over of less the €10mill. He would of also had a decent signing on fee/ agent fees/ etc. All of a sudden its probably a million pounds down the drain on a player that was never going to be good enough. Then he will leave on a free and get a nice loyalty bonus. This is the way Chelsea and Man city do business, not clubs like saints who shop in the bargain bin. Did you see a lot of Onuachu last season? I didnt but Goztepe got dicked by charlton in their presason warm ups. So hardly a great advert for the quality.

Firstly Lis is contracted to 2027, so next year he will have two years left, people seem to think he was on a massive wage, he was out of contract so i doubt that he got much of a signing on fee, neither would agents fees etc really be too much and I doubt whether we would have offered much in loyalty bonus's, when he signed he knew what the score was, he was being signed to develop him and see where it goes. You have to quantify what we are doing here, its a drop in the ocean, in essence its about moving forward a step from developing players at youth level, I am not sure why people are so negative about something that is a drop in the ocean financially, but may sometimes reap dividends. We got Him on a free, if we sell him for £1.5 million we will have covered costs, same as the Brazilians, in the past we signed promising youngsters and then saw them stagnate in the reserves etc, now it is a different strategy

God its even worse than i thought, a 5 year contract for a player that is never going to be good enough. Lis was a free agent so would have been in a strong negotiating position. If our Turkish sister club could of afforded him, why didnt they sign him, then when he was good enough sell him to Saints. thats what the likes of Brighton and Bournmouth do. Maybe that drop in the ocean, with all the other drop in the oceans, is the difference between us signing the Celtic midfielder?
