It was a Trump judge. he appointed him a while ago, so make of that what you will. It's an American thing to politically appoint judges, I don't think it happens in Europe, certainly not here

The uk Supreme Court is selected by politicians, specifically the Lord Chancellor. Whether they are politically motivated in their choices is open to interpretation. In other completely unrelated news Starmer has just given his barrister mate from his old chambers a peerage so he can become attorney general. Cronyism’s great innit?

That’s not entirely correct. The nomination is put forward by a commission which includes other judges to the Lord Chancellor. The Lord Chancellor can reject the nomination, but the selection commission can resubmit their original nomination should they choose to. If the commission decide to resubmit the initial name again, the Lord Chancellor cannot reject the nomination on this occasion but can ask for the panel to reconsider their decision. If the panel decide to resubmit the original name for the 3rd time, then the Lord Chancellor has no say and has to allow it to proceed to the Prime Minister who rubber stamps it for the king to approve. The Prime Minister cannot reject the nomination. In terms of Richard Hermer, he’s a very well respected lawyer. The Conservatives appointed their own MP’s to the role including Suella Braveran on 2 occasions!!!
