It's also the Premier League. I dont think our fans are any different to others. The West Brom game gave us something to get excited about and our fans responded. Some of the atmospheres, home and away were great last season because it was fun winning games.
It was a serious question when fans were asked on many social media sites, would you rather stay in the Championship than go up. It's boring, isn't it keep losing and not getting anywhere. Wolves, Everton, Leicester, Ipswich, Saints are all in the same boat. The three promoted sides went down last season and they are all near the bottom this season. The clubs straggling financially Wolves, Everton, Palace will struggle in the league, we all know it. You can't get anywhere in this league unless you invest heavily. Everyone knows it and become numb to it. Man City, Arsenal, Newcastle, Liverpool lead the way. They are all the richest clubs. It's so predictable.
Yes Fulham, Brighton, Brentford have proved that it's possible to do reasonably well and they are clearly well run and managed but they won't win a thing. It must also be boring finishing midtable every year.
This is what it seems like to me as well. It seems quieter across the whole stadium, as there just isn't any interaction at all. It's just silent, as those near the away support don't bother with any interaction, they just sit there in silence too.
But the attendances are back up to 31,000 plus, so it's what the club wanted. No need to close sections near the away support, as those near the away support are the quiet ones who just sit there in silence with the louder ones in the Northam. Except they aren't that loud because there is nothing to cheer on the pitch and no away fans near them to wind up either. It's all very dull , calm and quiet. Everyone sat near me now seems very relaxed but it's just boring. A million miles away from that West Brom game and any game in the Championship last season.
Yes, agreed. Today played out how it did and up until the penalty miss it was good. The Ipswich and Bournemouth games are our bread and butter and will be the vital ones. Nonetheless, we will struggle I think because we don't have the required quality to compete in this league. We need a goal scorer and if we don't score , miss penalties, miss chances, we won't win games.
Very true, but when we go one down, it's silent apart from the away fans singing in the corner. Last year was different in that the away fans singing right next to our lively lot, got our lively lot aggravated and many times we then started singing in response, even when losing. The fans near the away fans now, just sit there in silence, and don't react to anything. The fans in the Northam are too far away to react to anything and it's like a morgue. Even at the beginning of the game, it doesn't seem loud.
Anyone else really disappointed with the atmosphere in the stadium? Even at nil nil, it seemed really quiet, yet we have 7 thousand fans behind the goal. The lack of interaction between the home and away support makes the atmosphere really dull and subdued. The interaction between the old Itchen North and Northam all stood up between a bunch of rowdy away fans made things entertaining in the stands if not on the pitch. The away fans now are right next to a load of quiet Saints fans, who just sit there. It's very calm, quiet and subdued in the stadium and it's certainly not impacting results.
Great to see this happen today. The whole ground stood to clap with a picture of Elijah on the screen. He would have been watching down with a smile I'm sure. One of the positives of the day. RIP.
I thought there was a lot less passing around the back today. We got the ball forward much quicker than normal, with Dibling and fernandes making lots of forward runs. We were playing some good stuff, then missed the penalty, and the team just got p!ssed off that a great opportunity was missed. United scored and it was game over.
The Ipswich game is a massive game now, lose that and we know that we are doomed and can't win games in this league. Win it and it will give us hope that we can at least win in this league against the lesser sides. Forest won at Liverpool today, Brentford are decent, so are Newcastle so it's been a tough start. Bournemouth away after Ipswich. We need at least 4 points from the next 2 games. It's going to be a struggle regardless.
We changed the formation, we changed the goalkeeper, changed the team with all the attacking players we were asking for, but nil points. If our players miss chances and can't defend, nothing will change. You need really good premier league players who don't miss penalties, don't make mistakes and can score. It will be a real struggle this year, regardless.
But everything was working. We were creating chances. Archer scores and it's a different game. It's Archers fault, he should have scored and then it's one nil Saints.
Yep. Everything working well. Tactics good, players giving their all, good chances. Then one of our players misses a penalty. The players get despondent and they go and score. We will struggle to score because they simply can't, against top defences and goalkeepers, they arnt good enough. That penalty sums it up really.
Exactly. Many said on here, get Ralph out and bring in Cooper. The grass is rarely greener. And the players of today on hundreds of millions a week.are big babies.
It's true that the board and our owners are getting jittery about going back down. New players on long contracts have been signed. They know the financial implications and feelings of panic will be being felt. They didn't sack Ralph until later on in the season, and they are probably thinking we can't afford to leave it too late this time.
I personally hope RM does it and beats United and sorts it out, proving everyone wrong. I do agree that he needs to adapt his style of play and get the ball up the pitch much quicker, but he deserves a bit of time. I have my doubts that other managers could do much more with what we have. We are playing such good teams, who have spent millions on the best players in the world and I don't think we match that. We bring in "players with potential" and "players that play in West Ham and Villa reserves". We arn't matching up to even clubs like Fulham who buy proven PL players for 30 million.
Ultimately, If we keep losing, the board will act. Let's hope that doesn't happen and we start winning against United.
Probably some of my favourite memories, involve Saints beating Man United. The 3-1 was a pulsating game, we just threw everything at them in the first half and we needed the points. The 6 - 3 involving Eyal Berkovich, Ostenstad, Le Tiss, had many of us dreaming of a great season ahead. I remember us having a terrible season from that point onwards and ended up losing to Dave Jones Stockport County in the same year. Souness was manager. Remember a great comeback against Newcastle twice at the Dell. From 2 nil down with only a couple of minutes left to 2 all - a Le Tissier beauty. The Dell was a special old place, that's for sure.
You're right about beating Man U 2 -1. I had a premonition that we will witness all the sad faces of all those Mancs and glory hunter tourists as they get beat by Russell's rampant Saints.
In all seriousness, I might be just reminiscing about the 6-3 and the grey shirts, but we usually give United a game don't we. I think we could beat that lot. They have looked a shambles in the games I have seen them. Russel needs to get them to get the ball up the pitch much more quickly, with aggression and go right at them. The Leeds game last season was a turning point and RM changed tactics. Whatever he says, I think he will change things and we will go at them. We need a win , to settle everyone down that's for sure.
And yes, Russel needs to be given more time. Not only does he deserve it after the joy of Wembley last season, but sacking the manager doesn't necessarily mean things will get betteras we found out when we sacked Ralph.
We have spent 25 million on a goalkeeper, which we were all pleased about, including me. But on reflection, and yes in hindsight after another defeat and after Ramsdale has conceded 3 goals, should we have spent 25 million on a striker? Just a thought.
More like he left us last summer for "bigger and better things and he doesn't want the "embarrassing" return to his old club.
He could hardly sneak back to his old club saying "I'm not as good as I thought. Im a failure. West Ham don't think I am good as they thought I was, they dont want me, so here I am with my tail between my legs, back where I started. Sorry I left." All rather embarrassing.
Who remembers this? He was a star for Burnley, then West Ham bought him, doubled his wages and banished him to the reserves. But he was once a great player.
