No more then 6 pints of beer of meek boys beer a week or 7 glasses of wine a week?

Hideous.

What would the French make of it?

I'm thinking that I'll be back on the booze Fri and Sat evenings, but try to be good (boring) during the week. I'm running faster already - apparently every ounce lost means a couple of seconds quicker per mile (or something like that)...

There was a Horizon doco last year, "Is Binge Drinking Really That Bad?", featuring identical twin doctors under different regimes of 21 units per month; one evenly spread, the other 'binged' over a week (i know, 21 units in a week is hardly a heavy week; I wouldn't even count it as a particularly heavy night!). They were monitored for negative effects and the supervisors were surprised to find even the 'moderate', within-previous-guidelines, 21 units evenly spaced, regime was showing damage. One of the supervising experts said he might consider reviewing the guidelines as a result. F*cking interfering BBC!

In case anyone is interested, I'm now alcohol-free since late May, from a previous not inconsiderable rate of consumption. I miss it as a drug, as a source of sensory pleasure and as a past-time. It has left a void in my life that is not yet filled. My excess weight, lack of fitness and mild depression haven't changed, though the worry of inducing alcohol-related disease is now a weight off my mind. I intend reviewing my drinking after 12 months, but I am concerned that moderation has never been one of my stronger traits.

Look out for me at the Edinburgh Marathon, Karl - by that time I should (technically) be weightless and will be looking to levitate my way around the course in about half an hour.

They say stress can cause cancer too and I find having a few drinks relaxes me greatly. Even watching the R's put in regular shambolic performances becomes far more bearable when feeling half cut.

Anyway,

Salt, sugar, red meat, alcohol, anti biotics, is there anything we can consume these days without the need to see a priest?

I am doing dry first three weeks of January as taking Mrs FB away for a short break then. Did the same last year.

I started off at 72.9kg on the 1st Jan and lost a bit every day until the 7th when I was down to 71.1. Had a very slight cold and had not been to the gym since 31st. On the 7th I did a 90 mins weight circuit and yesterday (8th) I was back up to 72.6!

I did lose a couple of kilos last year but gradually put it back as I resumed drinking. Must do better this year!

As for the government guidelines, better to know the information and then make your own decisions than be in ignorance.

I shall mainly be ignoring this latest "scare" headline. Personally speaking, everything in moderation. Then once in a while go utterly bat-shit crazy!

These doctors and " specialists' give me the right arse ache. It seems that so many of lifes pleasures aren't good for you. Meat, drinking, fags. So fcuking what. If you enjoy it , do it? Whats the the point of giving up all of your pleasures to prolong a life that you dont want to live because you have given up all of your pleasures!

I think i'm gonna give LFW a miss for a month as well. A bottle of wine and 4 Peroni's a night, chuck in a few magic mushrooms now and then and spending time talking to strangers seemed to make more sense.

The way things are now going in this Country, a good night out in this Nanny State will be popping into a Water and Lettuce Bar, in which all that is on offer is a large selection of mineral waters and plates of various leaves on the bar. Surrounded by Magnolia painted walls and background piped sounds of the rain forests or Whale Song. Okay yaaahh? Now! ....I need a beer!!!

I think it's possible you've mistaken 'guidelines' and 'recommendations' with a law of some kind.

Nobody is forcing this on anyone, just advising the risks. You're perfectly at liberty to ignore them.

Yep.tbf the government are probably trying anything to get the amount youngsters drink when out.Me and the Mrs was watching one of them shows with the kids fighting and the fat birds collapsed in the gutter with their arses on show and covered in puke. She looked at me and said Jeeze Me and my mates have never, never, ever been like that. I just burst out laughing.( picturing Lady Pommy of Cranford in the gutter with half a kebab stuck to her arse cheek)
She's right tho. Even in my wildest maddest sessions on the sleaziest booziest shitest ''party cruise'' in good old magaloof have the birds been as bad as some of the lovelies you get now..
''Bouncers'' was the name of the show I think...

If anyone wants to watch the Horizon doco "Is Binge Drinking Really That Bad?", they have just repeated it on SBS so it will be available for a while. I'm pretty sure you'll need to VPN an Aussie base.

Just celebrating my 43 sober day.

(That's not consecutive, that's a total over 52 years, but it was only Tuesday and it still feels like an achievement)

Grrr this subject really gets me going. You'd think by listening to the Health people that we're a nation steadily drinking ourselves to death. But that's the odd thing. We aren't. All statistics show that alcohol consumption has in fact dropped pretty dramatically, especially over the past decade. Mix of things like pubs closing, lack of disposable income, and the young deciding dope and an XBox is a better way of spending their evenings. How is it therefore that drinkers have become the new folk demons of our age, taking their place alongside asylum seekers, paedophiles, knife-wheeling hoodies etc etc as the great social threat. The problem is grossly over-stated and doesn't affect the vast majority of the population. I suspect it may have something to do with the 2007 indoor smoking ban, which seems to have given the neo-prohibitionists great encouragement, and all the health professionals who engineered it desperately wanted something else to do afterwards and so churn out statistics telling us how bad things are without of course giving us any figures for the beneficial contribution alcohol makes by keeping most people who drink it that bit happier than they would have been otherwise. Most of us don't drink to get drunk, we drink because in moderation it's basically good for you.

But how are the figures arrived at. Everyone lies to the doctor about how much they drink.
Serious liver problem ? How much do you drink a day ? Only a couple of pints doc.
Conclusion, two pints a day = liver damage and death.

Do you really really think doctors haven't worked that one out? That after years of seeing people file through their surgeries, they don't know anything about human nature? Do you think they also believe that there is a terrible problem with people falling onto protubing objects while their trousers happened to be down?

I'm due for a random health check next week or so, there's a form asking how much I drink. I mentioned it to an NHS nurse I know and said "I presume you know we all lie bit?" and she rolled her eyes as if I'd asked her if she had heard that the earth was round.

There are such things as controlled tests btw.

No-one says that you can't drink what you want. They are just reporting what they've found out, namely that you massively increase your risk of cancer if drinking goes above a really alarmingly low figure. Its your funeral.
