Send A Birthday Greeting To Big Ron Wednesday, 25th May 2011 09:08
Send a birthday wish to Ron Davies
Described in his time by no less than Sir Matt Busby as the best centre forward in Europe, Ron Davies celebrates his 69th birthday today in his adopted home of America.
Its been well documented on Saints websites that Ron has not been in the best of health and luckily enough, rgular on this site Tim Mumford or Tijuana Tim as he is better known has worked tirelesly for Ron ove rthe past few years to help make life a little easier for him, when others have longlost interest given up the cause.
For those younger readers Ron was a product of the 1960's when footballers where treated as little better than cattle by football clubs who decided when they would be bought and sold, whilst Saints afforded Ron a good living, it has to be said that he could possibly have earned a lot more had he had the freedom to move clubs that players enjoyed today, but he stayed put and left Saints in April 1973 having played 277(4) games for Saints in seven seasons at the Dell scoring an amazing 153 goals, all in either the top flight or a major cup compitition including Europe.
How many strikers can say they have scored at Old Trafford let alone scored four in one game as Ron did back in August 1969 when Ron netted all the goals in a 4-1 win.
Ron leads a hard life over in the States as he reaches the golden age when he should be a lot more comfortable, whilst there are those who will perhaps say that as a footballer he enjoyed a lot more wealth than most, even back in the 60's, the fact is Ron Davies was a legend to Saints supporters and that being the case we should all do a little bit to bring a smile to his face.
If you leave a message in the comments section below Tim will read them out to him later today and hopefully it will remind Ron of the good times at the Dell and the high esteem he is held by suporters of a certain age

I remember as a very young nipper my Dad taking me to the last home game in the 1966/67 season against Aston Villa. If memory serves you bagged 4 that day Ron and Terry Paine even stepped aside to let you take a penalty! The most remarkable thing was had you been the regular spot kick taker that season you would have scored 50 odd goals. You still remain an absolute legend.
Ron can still see you in FRIDAYS night club in Southampton the early 80`s.Not old enough to remember your playing days im afraid, but from what im told a Saints Legend. Hope you feel well enough soon to "sup" a few more soon.
Happy Birthday. What a player. I think we even forgive you for turning out for "them down the road"! Best wishes and thank you for all you did for Saints - shame in a way you weren't English (I know there's nothing wrong with being Welsh!) but what a sight you and Terry Paine would have made turning out for England!
Happy birthday Ron, I count myself lucky enough to have seen you play for Saints from day 1. Always approachable and down to earth...not something you can say about a lot of modern players, especially those at the "top of the tree" as you were.
It's sad you live somewhere that knows little of your footballing achievements. I do hope you make it over here sometime soon...your presence would make headlines and be treated as a true Saints legend should.
If youngsters need a sample of your talents you can see them online on YouTube:
That MUFC game was the first football game I ever saw at a ground. My Dad whi was a rugby supporter took me along assuming we would be thumped given that Best, Charlton etc were all playing. Needless to say it backfired hugely and I have been a fan ever since. Best wishes Ron you are responsible for at least one lifelong Saints fan entering the fold.
Hi Ron You were my footballing hero from the time you joined Saints for I think around £50,000!!!! I wish you d come home to St Marys, cant believe club wouldnt look after you. But in the meantime have a really happy birthday!! Best wishes
Ron Davies was the reason I started supporting Saints back in the mid to late 60's. It would be amazing if it were ever possible for us to arrange for you to visit St Marys as a guest of honour. We've never forgotten you Ron! Sincere Best Wishes & Happy Birthday Ron!
