Following on from Ageds Horror thread..Gangster films..
I know there are some classics out there ..The Godfather's, Long Good Friday. But Carlto's Way is my favourite Gangster film .Could be the music, probably the acting( Penn and Pacino are outstanding) but for me it blows Goodfellows out of the water..
special mention for best name 'razors' in long good friday...he's real name was P.H.morriaty !!

2nd best in American Gangster films for me is the much forgotten Donnie Brasco, Again ,another one that blows Goodfellows out the water. No glamour ,Lefty is trying to smash open a parking meter FFS .Great film.
Any of those gangster movies based around 1920's/30's hoodlums. Angels With Dirty Faces an old black and white classic still works for me and if it classifies as a gangster film, The Sting, one of my all time favourite films. Never tire of watching that.
There aint half been some clever bastards.

Carlitos way, top film. "You think your big time?!!...your gonna die...big time!". Public enemy. Heat. lock stock 2 smoking barrels.
carlito's way,,"you said they were friends....but there aint no friends in this shit business"
layer cake was good
can we crow bar 'harry brown in" ??
'st georges day 'was an abomination
my all time number one...'sexy beast' must have seen it 50 times. know the script off by heart
lovejoy and ben kingsley were magnificent
"arses everywhere, spanking, wa nking, cocaine, camcorders...it was like ancient rome!"
and of course 'performance' with jagger, john bindon and edward fox....all done on heroin .utter madness.

Get Carter. Snatch and lockstock are good, obviously godfather, goodfellas, carlitos way but to name a few in the mafia gangster genre. New(ish) films American gangster, public enemies and only God forgives also need a shout.

Is the film noir genre classed as Gangster? I'd go for one of them if they are - Hang My Gallows High/Out of the Past if they are otherwise I'm left with Bugsy Malone or Bonnie and Clyde as the only ones I've watched

Loads of great gangster movies mentioned on this thread, the best overall is The Godfather but only because its a trilogy. For the best one off movie nothing touches Goodfellas. Here's one of over a dozen memorable scenes during the film
Ps great soundtrack to boot
