Someone told me a little story a week or so ago so I thought I'd go to Swansea library and and have a look in the archives and see for myself and get some print outs just in case i might ever need them like.
Whilst there I printed out a couple of other things.

I was there too. Managed to get into Kop end just before half time. Spoke to the policeman in charge of security of Vetch at that time. He said he'd spent some time in Liverpool earlier in his career. He said they weren't so much a police force as an army of occupation. There was never ever going to be a problem between Swans and Liverpool at that time.

Thank you Darren for the cuttings.... I was locked out for that one and what annoyed me and still annoys me to this day was? I and no doubt quite a few others whom were also locked out were extremely loyal die-hard supporters whom would go away with a vastly smaller away following whilst having to brave the utterly horrendous rival hooligan supporters of that day and age. I knew many whom went to that game and got in didn't even attend home games. Yet I and others would show up to watch SCFC v Maesteg Park in the Welsh Cup.

A few months latter I returned to Liverpool to watch Everton v SCFC and only a few coaches went to that one. And to Sunderland? 3-4 coaches only. Oh and that silly little hooligan book by SCFC hooligans? None of them were brave enough to navigate a nasty place like Everton/Stanley Park i.e. notorious for craft-knife slashings. None of them!

It was by far our largest away following for the (both seasons of) Div 1 years. I went to most of those away games. In those days Anfield was the place to go for all away supporters whereas I would say its Old Trafford for this day and age? SCFC takes away vastly greater numbers away today compared to what it used to. Maybe down to the decline of hooliganism, making it safer to do so?

I remember the Police on horses herding the fans against the wall, no need in their actions , and being pelted by kids aged about 9 throwing stones/bricks at the supporters buses/cars.

Because of the crush or just because they didn't like the look of you?

Ironically it was the ordinary non-hooligans supporters that used to brave the away experience of that day. You only had to go on the Grange Town End for a Cardiff v Swans away game to see hoards of unknown hooligan faces that were brave among a large away contingent of like minded '2-hoolie-games-a-season' yobs complete with the reassurance of a heavy police presence and escort.

The other away games? They'd disappear when it was away to nasty places with bigger clubs and equally nasty fans. Yeah travelling with only a few coaches mostly of official supporters and no police escort to places like Leeds United or Everton away spooked them didn't it. Where were they there? Any official away supporter of that day and age will tell you that!

Tracey N and AB? Did not see their faces at Everton for example and?............The KH's bus crowd seemed pretty conspicuous by their absence? Like I said as a card-carrying (yes we were issued with photo cards in those days) official supporter member I knew the hoolies from my fellow scarf and hat fans. The hoolies you tended to see at a high profile game like Cardiff at the Vetch or not at all..........that was my experience.

Some bitter/sweet memories for me there Darr.

On the football side I was very priveledged to have been at Anfield when we drew 2-2 in Div 1 even though Tosh wore his Liverpool shirt for Shanks' minute silence and we thought he was lining himself up for the Liverpool job and then the Kop all screamed 'You're gonna get your f*cking heads kicked in' when a Swans fan turned up late.
I was also at the Arsenal home game THAT great volley from Max Thomspon one of the best at the Vetch.
I went to PSG in Europe didn't go to Leipzig but just fantastic memories for me, ones which I never thought I'd see again in my lifetime but now thoroughly enjoying them second time around with my two sons !!
The only 'blot on the landscape' for me with this coverage is the Welsh Cup trophy theft from the Vetch. As a Sandfields boy I was a regular at St Phillips Community Centre and as a 16 year old kid, I was one of the more mature lads there.
With a bit of a football background, I was asked to organise a youth team to play in a local South Wales Police community competition.
I chose my squad and we trained well, the event was held at the Leisure Centre in Swansea and we progressed right through to the final stages whereupon the legend that is Terry Medwin approached me and complimented me on the quality of the squad we had.
Now for the down side .... 2 of 'my boys' in that team endured a night of unbelievable naivety and through extreme teenage high spirits made the most ridiculous decision to break into the Vetch.
The rest, as they say, is history, both served juvenile sentences but more pertinent to me personally, one lad has since passed away.
Yes they were extremely foolish to do what they did and paid the price but for one of them it was a price far too great for anyone to pay.

Too right that card made me feel important! I was privileged to have discounted travel that saved me sh#t loads of money i.e. going to nearly all those away games costs a lot over a season? Sunderland away was £6.50 I saved a Pound!

I've been to many away games that were disappointing, rain soaked, where we deserved to win, but didn't. Grounds were horrible with pillars for viewing, stewards who were over the top in their duty. I've been showered with golf balls, coins, and bricks.

But I would have to be dragged kicking and screaming to Anfield ever again.

Still don't know who decided to close half the away end before the kick off, and why did the police disregard the instructions from the SCSClub, informing them of the exact amount of fans that would be attending that match.

Half the supporters on the bus I was stewarding didn't get in, albeit with genuine tickets bought in
advance.( often pay on the gate games at that time) It was an away day disaster all round.

Thanks Darran for the press cuttings, shame you missed the SWEP full page when AC and Neil Robinson were fined by Toshack for the P### in the Parkgate scandal.
