The Unfair IMO Criticism Of Ki Sung Yueng 13:32 - Jan 19 with 11031 views | koreanswan | This is not a post to blindly defend a fellow Korean but I was quite disappointed last night to hear the Swans fans beginning to get onto Ki's back and then also the local press scoring him so low and commenting on how bad he was. I can see when Ki has a bad match. Against Sunderland with the team down to 10 men as an experienced international he should have helped hold the team together but he had a bad match and played his part (along with the ref and some other players) in a bad defeat. On the day he was very poor. The home game before this however he got the winning goal and then last night he set up the winning goal. Two huge contributions which could help keep the Swans in the Premier League. What I don't understand is why he is judged so harshly when other midfielders like Cork are not and Leon is lauded as world class? Last night I looked through various reports from Sky, Goal.com, Mirror and all had Ki with the same or better rating than Cork and most had him level with Britton yet on here and in local Swansea media he is being destroyed and his effort questioned? I know that Ki has played injured for Swansea and also played matches without much rest after long haul flights and does everything the coach and the backroom team ask for him. It is not his game to go into tackles which are 60/40 against him. it's his job to keep the ball and he's got the second highest pass % in the league this year (higher than Leon despite the fact Ki plays more dangerous passes). This is not trying to say he is better than Leon or Cork or anyone else. All three are different players with different attributes and make a good midfield. I just feel as the clubs player of the year in the clubs greatest ever season he deserves a little bit more respect from the fans and local media.
The Unfair IMO Criticism Of Ki Sung Yueng on 20:38 - Jan 19 with 1203 views | skacrazy | I have recently defended him but last night he seemed to be avoiding a lot of challenges and wasn't as good as we know he can be. His performance was almost Shelveyesque. With regard to Cork and Leon, the fans only ask that a player gives 100%. Leon very rarely gives anything less and Cork's performances since Curtis brought him back into the side after he was dropped by Monk have been very positive. Last night Ki's performance wasn't too good. At this point in time though we all need to be getting behind the team as much as we can.
The Unfair IMO Criticism Of Ki Sung Yueng on 20:39 - Jan 19 with 1203 views | dameedna | There were occasions when Leon Ash muscled their way into tackles and whether it us part of Ki s game or not everyone is expected to win a tackle they may not go in for at the start of the season. Cork is struggling to show the highest quality but has fought his way into the team. Ki is going to have to knuckle down next game he is a big lad and he needs another side to his game particularly as he matures. I think he could do well but he needs to start showing a committed side for his own good as he is going to get sussed out by our relegation battling foes.

Bordering on cowardice on the tackle and he got berated by Williams a few times for it.

Then surely you would understand that as Ki is playing in the British game it is our 'culture' to get involved in 'stupid' 50/50 tackles? Me thinks your on a wind up.

Yeah because that 's what the modern premier league is full of innit. Loads of British Tommy Smith types doing 10 plus studs up 50/50's every game. Tell me, where do you live? Is it the 1970's by any chance?

Don't be silly Brynnie, i get some of your points (sometimes) I really do, but if you think going for a 50/50 tackle equates to being a hatchet man, then your clearly watching the wrong sport. [Post edited 19 Jan 2016 21:13]

The Unfair IMO Criticism Of Ki Sung Yueng on 20:34 - Jan 19 by Brynmill_Jack | Dave, I do rate Siggy , precisely because his work rate demonstrates just how much he cares about the mess we're in. I slated him last season when he wasn't being more positive in possession but that was down to our poor manager . He did give the ball away quite needlessly last night too but he's above reproach . Ki was being called what a dog wouldn't lick last night and that's not on. |
Has Shelvey, who in my opinion was a disgrace, led to this overreaction against some players? Or is it the power of social media or the money the players earn? The sarcasm to Gomis' offside was exactly what the team didn't need at that stage in the game for example. It's one thing to air opinions on an Internet forum but to carry those opinions into the ground when you should be getting behind the team is just plain wrong I reckon.

100 % agree. The groaning of all things Ki began as a whisper and seemed to infect the majority. That's just what every player needs, their own fans groaning every time they touch the ball. And this is a player with a 93% pass success rate and the assist for the only (winning) goal. Says a lot about some of our "fans" dunnit

A 50/50 challenge in the current climate might get you a yellow or a red. Besides which is besides the point, that being that he ran his knackers off, passed to a 93% success rate and got the assist for the goal . He didn't deserve the sh*t he was getting. Who was our last real tough tackling hardman anyway, Martin Thomas? Circa 1999?

Agree completely. Especially when we are in the position we are in at the moment, we need to pamper our overpaid players and make them feel loved and wanted rather than mock them. I did pull excb on this in the match thread last night.

You don't need to be a "tough tackling hardman" to win 50/50 challenges (or 40/60 or even 30/70 for that matter. See Britton, Leon.

I didn't say he did deserve 'the shit'. I was replying to the poster and not giving my opinion on Ki's contribution. Yellow and reds cards are part of the game, and should not be used as an excuse not to make a fair challenge for a 50/50 ball however. Surely Brynnie, you should know that. Come on now, and get that silly head off.

Was more concerned by the lack of forward passes than the tackling, but he's not alone in that.
| Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back. |

For being an utter shithouse on several occasions leading us to being put under pressure? Yes, absolutely. There are times imo that players need to be made aware by the fans that their efforts are not good enough or acceptable. Ashley Williams clearly thought the same during the game.

I thought we were discussing Ki. Do you think his utter shithousery in the tackle last night was acceptable given that our captain berated him on several occasions for it?
The Unfair IMO Criticism Of Ki Sung Yueng on 22:06 - Jan 19 with 984 views | LeonisGod | First half I thought he was ok and covered a lot of ground. He was able to play his natural game as we bossed possession. Second he look lost when we started to play on the back foot and try to catch them on the break. It showed that he was in an unfamiliar position on the left of the diamond. He became an observer and contributed very little. Personally, I'd have taken him off with a good half hour to go and put Montero on, but it seems Jeff has pissed in Curt's tea or summin.

Nyom is really fast but rubbish going forward. The diamond was the right choice of setup. Montero would have accomplished nothing sitting on the touchline like he does. Would make Ki's contribution look blood and thunder. Barrow drifted about a lot and made himself a nuisance when he came on, really pleased for the lad (considering I slated him as a no-hoper earlier this season).

About sums it up for me. Ki is not someone I rate because he's far more bothered about making a pointless backwards or sideways pass than doing something incisive. Last year he looked sharp, was aggressive in a controlled manner and seemed hungry . He got in great positions, scored goals and sometimes dominated games. This season, whether it's his kid being born (see JJS also) but he's just not "there" mentally and is slow to react to situations.....unatheltic and cumbersome at times. If on top of this he's not gonna put his foot in when necessary....then not good. Let's see if he's up for the battle for the rest of the season because he seems to like to disappear back to Korea around April time with some unknown injury......

The Unfair IMO Criticism Of Ki Sung Yueng on 13:51 - Jan 19 by koreanswan | Yes he was more help to Watford than Swansea. He set up the only goal of the game? You see how ridiculous this post is and again leads me to wonder why so much hate? It's bizarre. |
He did well to set up the goal but what you don`t seem to see is that his all round play was poor, often losing the ball in possession and our resident midget Leon half Ki`s size still offers more aggression and bravery, Ki needs to toughen up simple as. We know he is one of the best passers in the side but in the last two games or so his play has become pedestrian and we could do without dribbles across our box and dribbles taking the ball back towards our goal. If you have not already noticed we are in a very difficult position in the league and need every player to show courage and determination and that includes Ki.
