The Squad 2022-2023 02:05 - Jul 25 with 8449 viewsKerouac

Not looking too clever is it? A bit of a dog's breakfast...

- Crap keeper (without decent competition?)

- Rubbish Wing-backs

- Full-backs? Manning can play Left-back, Lati doesn't seem up to RB and Naughton is too old to deal with pacey wingers.
PLUS - Naughton, Lati and Manning have been playing their football at CB under Martin.
Sorinola up to it? He'd better be.

- CB? Wood looks decent, could partner Cabango and Darling? Darling had better be up to it given the outlay. Worrying signs in pre-season though, hope he comes good.
If we play 3 centre-backs we have lots of options and cover...but you can only play that way with decent wing-backs. We don't seem to have any.

- DM/CM
Should be fine with Joey and Fulton (who has never let us down but by the sounds of it is out of the door). I guess Harvey White is the specialist on Loan to replace Fulton as back up. With Grimes partnering Allen. Walsh seems to be a waste of space (nice little passer, but never fit). I prefer Ntcham at attacking midfield but hopefully he'll be able to do a job at CM if needed...don't like him in the tackle though

Wingers
- We don't have any except Garrick...although I'm convinced Joseph could do a good job there...unfortunately it seems that neither of them, nor Whittaker, will be given any game time there.

Attacking Midfield
- We have 3 players who can do a good job there...I guess Patterson is going to be used wider, he doesn't look comfortable there though. No pace.

Striker
- We have two top strikers for this division. I will be amazed if Piroe is not gone by September though. If Piroe goes presumably we'll have money to replace him but I don't think we'll be fortunate to pick up a similar player to Piroe's quality though...odds are against it. More likely to pick up somebody who used to play for MK Dons.
Joseph could step up and Whittaker has the raw talent.
Cullen, unfortunately, looks like he could use a move to Newport and build up from there...still not writing the boy off altogether though.

All in all, my assessment is that we are weaker this year than last year. The manager has not addressed the squad's weaknesses and there does not seem to be much of what you'd call a coherent plan...please prove me wrong, I've bought 2 season tickets, I would like to watch my club play competitive games throughout the season and not be near the relegation end...but honestly, this squad looks like they belong down the bottom (once Piroe goes)

Agree with both the above. We are stronger this season than last.

Brought in two solid CB’s, brought back Joe Allen and only lost Downes.

A striker force that is the envy of the division.

Spent more in the last 12 months than any other 12 months period in our football league history.

I am the OP and I am holding Martin responsible for not addressing weak areas of the squad, he has had a whole season, we are in his third window.

He is not developing youngsters, he puts players in positions they are unsuited to...I am all for adapting the squads by asking players to learn new positions (for example, Naughton could do a good job as a DM, Joseph could be a decent RWB, Wood might be able to help us at LWB)...but this is not what Martin is doing.
His 'plan' is incoherent, much like his defenders.

What Dr. P says is also true, on paper in key areas, he has quality that is not available to other managers in this division...the fact that he produces a team and a squad that is more likely to struggle than gain promotion is squarely on his shoulders.
He is meant to play to the squad's strengths and hide/work on the weaknesses, he is meant to shape the squad so we have options.

...and I should also add, that after the defence of Martin put up here last season, the one where we were told results weren't important, "he is building for next season"...then yes, he has to deliver.

Unfortunately the financial restrictions have and are having a big part to play here, no room for manoeuvre, we need players off the wage bill before we can get new ones in.

We all know what we needed, the back 3 has been addressed, Downes replacement but we now have to look into the wing back situation and the creative 10, we really need to get platers out before anything can be done to address this.

I don't really get where you are going with this K, is the squad a dogs dinner as you say or are you now saying that Martin is at fault for how the squad is managed and is infact not a dogs dinner.
Its becoming a confusing read.

The situation is, we need players out before we can get any on. Unfortunately we need players who are not up to speed shipped out and players brought in to cover these key areas, we need to create our own funds and free up wage space, sorry to repeat myself but these are the realities that need to understood.

If the above is not done then we will have to carry on playing players out of position, you even suggested that by stating we consider Naughton and Joseph in other positions.....its exactly the same regardless of how its twisted.

It may all be confusing but sometimes the mind creates the confusion away from the reality. It needs to be understood, without the understanding of the whole picture then silly estimations are made that are totally unrealistic.

What do you mean by financial restrictions?

There are financial restrictions every season. Those restrictions usually far greater than we have seen this season.

We have spent more in the last 12 months than any other 12 month period in our football league history.

This is probably in our top 4 or 5 biggest budget seasons in our non Premier League history, both in terms of wage budget and transfer budget.

Again - the experts, bookmakers and data scientists suggest Swansea should be in the top 8. Nothing unrealistic there. They would think you were being overly unrealistic - as I predicted you would be months ago.

Facts.

I think you maybe getting confused

Players who are "not up to speed" need to be shipped out, Im sure what you mean is "expensively paid" such as Bennet and Fulton, we all should now be aware of the issues surrounding Bennett as being contractual not football as it is only since game 49 did he fall off the radar.

We have always had squads which had some weak areas especially in depth even during the PL years ....

We do need to get the wage bill down but it makes you wonder why Martin doesnt want to persist with Ogebeta is he really useless?

Sorry Vetch, I should have included the expensive players as well as the ones not up to speed.

I couldn't tell you regards Ogbeta, I only saw a few glimpses but want really enough to judge. Only thing that is clear, there doesn't appear to be many if any championship clubs lining up for him.
We have Manning and Sorinola covering the left so seem well stocked in that department, Manning clearly is seen as more valuable than Ogbeta.

When you said we had financial restrictions, did you realise this season is in the top 5 budgets we have had in our football league history? And record 12 month transfer spend in our football league history?

Not as great as the last 4 years, prior to that, we were in the football league in 2011.......10years ago! The play off final was a 60M pound game that day, today its classed as the 150M game!

Another way of looking at it, it's the lowest budget we have had in 5 years.
As for transfer spend, we could have easily spent more on transfers in the last few seasons but instead opted to use it on wages, we have to be aware of FFP, it was a choice..... Transfer fees or wages.

Im happy to take inflation into it if you like.

It will still be in our top 5 biggest football league budgets in our history and will be the envy of a lot of teams in the division who won’t even get near our budget.

The play off game in 2011 was not a £60m game, it was a £90m game.

We have the 8th biggest salary budget in the league, that’s including the three recently relegated Premier League teams.

Salary league table for 2022/23

1. Watford £33.36m
2. Norwich £26.37m
…………………………………
3. Burnley £24.25m
4. West Brom £18.86m
5. Stoke £12.40m
6. Bristol City £11.74m
…………………………………
7. Sheff Utd £10.33m
8. Swansea £9.83m
9. Birmingham £9.64m
10. Cardiff £8.98m
11. Boro £8.85m
12. Reading £8.07m
13. QPR £7.85m
14. Huddersfield £7.12m
15. Preston £6.67m
16. Blackburn £5.94m
17. Millwall £5.54m
18. Wigan £5.42m
19. Luton £5.24m
20. Blackpool £4.50m
21. Coventry £4.41m
………………………………..
22. Sunderland £4.09m
23. Hull £3.53m
24. Rotherham £2.12m

So like I said, top 8 bare minimum…

which is in line with our budget compared with the rest of the league, in line with the bookmakers, the data scientists and the experts.

We could also look at squad value which also has us around that mark. All this with us having a stable manager (here for a year) and a whole season of gearing up for this coming one. We ironically have the 8th longest serving manager in the Championship.

1. Paul Warne (Rotherham) 5 years 233 days
2. Mark Robins (Coventry) 5 years 135 days
3. Gary Rowett (Millwall) 2 years 271 days
4. Michael O’Neil (Stoke) 2 years 253 days
5. Nathan Jones (Luton) 2 years 52 days
6. Liam Richardson (Wigan) 1 year 248 days
7. Nigel Pearson (Bristol City) 1 year 147 days
8. Russell Martin (Swansea City) 352 days

No getting away from it, whichever way you want to spin it - reality points to a top 8 being bare minimum.

And this is why we are trying to get appx 2.4M of Bennett and Fultons wages off that bill, likely with only around 50-60% then used to go towards the wages of 3 players.

Would then knock us down to 12th in that table if we can manage it 🤞

In reality, that is not a wage budget that we can realistically progress with financially......its the reality.

And I’m sure other teams will want to get their wage budget down too, we aren’t the only team with a player or two the club would like off the books.

Whether we can sustain it or not is irrelevant. In terms of budgets we have the 8th biggest one in the league this season.

Also your maths are off (again). Fulton and Bennett on a combined £29,000 a week. £29,000 x 52 = £1,508,000.

60% of £1,508,00 is £904,000. Meaning you are expecting to save £604,000 p/a. by their departure.

That takes us from 8th to 9th (£9.8m to £9.2m)… and that is assuming we are the only club to wage trim, which is unlikely.

i could be wrong but i thought Bennett was on roughly £23k a week, thought Fulton would have been on at least £12/13k after his last contract extension. I know it's splitting hairs in all reality although i believe both could still do a job for us.
I've found it crazy that Bennett has been isolated through no fault of his own and treated with such a lack of class, he should have been training with the first team, no reason to have excluded him, he could have been getting minutes with u21's

You are confusing yourself.
I have made myself clear.
The squad is a dogs dinner, despite us having the 8th highest budget in the league, because the manager has not used his resources wisely and has constructed a squad heavy in some areas and light in others.

E.G.
He cannot let Bidwell go, for nothing, then not give Ogbeta (£350k - 6 months ago) a sniff forcing him out, then purchase Sorinola for approx. £350k (a player he has worked with before) ...and then claim the fact that we are weak up the left someone else's fault.

He can't, sell Connor Roberts for peanuts, loan in Laird (a player he has worked with before) who totally under performs, than watch Laird walk away from us a few months in (Is he not a good judge of character, does he not inspire loyalty?), replace him with an experienced Championship quality right-back (Christie), then watch him walk away and join another club a few months later without making that position a top priority when the Summer window opened.
If he is not going to find solutions from within, Garrick, Joseph...then he had better have a quality RWB lined up, he has had a season to think about it.

You say we need a creative 10...
We have Patterson, Ntcham & Congreve. He has also played Piroe there for half of last season.

Why is he not interested in bringing in any wingers?

Why, if nobody will take Bennett on those wages has he not used him and saved on Wood's wage (Wood might be excellent, we are talking about management of resources)...I know what people will say to that, 'because that would mean Bennett having his contract extended'. Yes?
So why then has he not found a club willing to loan Bennett and pay a portion of his wage?
Why has he not sought to re-negotiate Bennett's contract? (You could pay him more now but with the contract extension taken out...so Bennett doesn't lose out. At least then he could be used this season!)

Allen replaces Downes yes? (at least for a season or two)
He has let Korey Smith go and Dhanda...where is a young centre-midfielder from League 1 to come in and replace those two? Or if there is nobody he fancies in League 1, how about a free signing? There are probably a number of midfielders on the continent that are available on a free this summer.

If Latibeaudiere is to be replaced as a centre-back then shouldn't Martin have worked out he's not much cop as a right-back before making that decision?
If he likes Lati, perhaps he shouldn't have signed Wood.

Why has he got rid of our young keeper who is a potential Premier League keeper and our cheap, experienced back-up keeper Hamer...and spent £400k on Fisher (a player, once again, he has worked with before).

A good manager, blessed with a strike force like we have, Allen and Grimes in midfield, Cabango, Naughton and Darling at the back, Ntcham and Patterson and Congreve as 10s....would have done something about the wide areas and the keeper and had us challenging at the top end.
Martin might prove me wrong yet.
Enough of the excuses for the man.

i could be wrong but i thought Bennett was on roughly £23k a week, thought Fulton would have been on at least £12/13k after his last contract extension. I know it's splitting hairs in all reality although i believe both could still do a job for us.
I've found it crazy that Bennett has been isolated through no fault of his own and treated with such a lack of class, he should have been training with the first team, no reason to have excluded him, he could have been getting minutes with u21's

Both are confirmed with the green tick. ✅

£29,000 between them. But if it makes any difference, even if we took your figures it still wouldn’t move us down any further.

£10.5k a week for Andy Fisher, you've got to be kidding me.

He came from League 1...this is the highest he has ever played....yet people get upset at Fulton's wage (who has played in the Prem and proved solid in the Championship!

Might i ask what they grey tick is for? Estimate wage?

If Ntcham is on anywhere near that amount it is ridiculous.

Squad numbers have just been released.

No shirt for Ryan Bennett.
What a way to treat a first team player.

Shows a total lack of class from Martin and the club.

We can't afford to pay him, he is the highest paid player at the club at 25k a week.

Last summer a weekly wage cap was brought in at 10k max, no player will sign on at more than that, it's been brought in to bring sustainability to the finances.

Unfortunately for Bennett, his age and going forward as a club, we need him off the payroll or atleast a certain percentage at best.
