New Energy Policy 16:50 - Apr 7 with 4289 views | Dr_Winston | Thoughts? New nuclear reactors = Good. No other currently existing technology comes even close to providing the regular, reliable power supply needed if we're going to hit decarbonisation targets. The mini-reactors especially are an exciting technology. Offshore wind farms = Also good. There is a wealth of experience and capability in the UK for maintaining offshore installations gleaned from 40+ years of North Sea oil. Not a single wind farm should be opened on land until the possibilities of offshoring them have been exhausted. Hydrogen = on the face of it it's slightly insane that so little progress has been made Globally in fully harnessing the potential of the most abundant substance in the Universe. Big room for improvement here. In general the move towards becoming largely self sufficient with the fossil fuels we're still going to need to use is also a good idea, but I do forsee issues with the oil companies. They're not going to want to sell expensively discovered and extracted oil and gas at a discount. Disappointing not to see a requirement for all new housing and buildings to have at least some solar generating capacity though. The technology is proven and not that expensive. That and moves towards improvements in insulation.

Sure I read somewhere that it was a RR design.

New Energy Policy on 17:27 - Apr 7 with 2695 views | Professor | Nuclear is clearly the best option in the short to medium term to reduce fossil fuel use which will allow more time for renewables to increase efficiency and offshore is sensible (more reliable coastal breeze). Incorporation of solar into new builds would have been sensible as would looking at tidal power RR have plenty of experience in small reactors of course from the submarine fleet. Just a shame the decision was so late. Hydrogen is a bit more challenging to get right than it first seems-but again needs investment. Some pretty big offshore set ups here.

They're starting a trial in Cornwall mixing 20% Hydrogen with gas, a lot of new Boilers are Hydrogen ready, problem is at the moment gas gives off a residue when it burns and todays Boilers have burners and other elements in their make up that cope with the residue, Hydrogen is clean so doesn't need those elements. The use 100% Hydrogen is someway off yet.

Given the potential of it you'd think we'd be a lot further down the road though. Like with cars. I can't help thinking that Hydrogen Fuel Cell technology would have been a better option than electric battery. As quick and convenient as current liquid fuels.

I agree. Really this policy should have been in place a decade ago. The most significant omission for me is the lack of efficiencies in new builds and retro fitting to existing housing. All buildings could be power stations to some degree and most could exist on less energy than they currently use. Tidal power is likely to be back on the news in Swansea pretty soon.

Unfortunately to split water into Hydrogen and Water takes more electricity than the resulting power generated when you burn Hydrogen to power vehicles.

At least one poster who has some idea about scientific/engineering efficiency. It is just as bad if it is reformed form natural gas, you end up with far less energy than you start with and release CO2 in the bargain. [Post edited 8 Apr 2022 13:44]

It's not radioactive. There's nothing to worry about.

That's basically anti nuclear propaganda on a Welsh nationalist website. All independent scientific tests and models (4 since 2013 I believe) demonstrate the radiation levels are so low it isn't considered radioactive.

The Welsh Government should announce its building a nuclear power plant on London docks. Fair is fair.

New Energy Policy on 15:44 - Apr 8 with 2510 views | Kilkennyjack | No nuclear energy needed in Wales. We can be 100 per cent renewable energy in a decade. Wind, tidal, and water turbines. Nuclear accidents will happen and i dont want that in Wales or the UK. Nuclear power stations will be a war target.

No we can't. And if we could what would we do for the next decade?

Plus they're dumping it off Cardiff so who cares anyway?

New Energy Policy on 16:29 - Apr 8 with 2493 views | 73__73 | They should have been building new nuclear power stations 20 years ago. Remember, they started to build hinkley point C in 2010 and is still year away from completion. Time to stop talking and start building. Sizewell C, Wylfa etc

Accept of course any day the wind does not blow where will Wales get its power? From gas power stations or nuclear power stations in the rest of the UK or France.

When was the last time a nuclear power station was attacked in a war ? Can’t wait for your answer

A nuclear war you dope. It would be a prime target. Even a terrorist would see it as a target as well.
