Hornets on Sunday 19:31 - Feb 24 with 297855 viewsEllDale

They’re tweeting that their “matchday operations” are being restricted for the home game against Barrow on Sunday for reasons that they don’t want to divulge at the moment.
The bottom line is that the crowd capacity is limited to 920 and there will be no cash admissions on the day.
Wonder what that’s all about?

‘Rochdale Hornets chose to launch a legal action’

A black day in the sporting history of this town.

Repesentatives of the two clubs (ones with no egos) should have been locked in a room, maybe with representatives of the council and the RFL) and not let out until a signed agreement was reached.

Surely this could have been orgaised in a way that both organisations could make money, the town would get international attention and the links with the Fijian community would have been strengthened.

Shameful outcome…..and I dont care about finger pointing.

The problem pioneer was 2021.

In April 2021 Rochdale Hornets seemingly announced without any document, safety certificate or contract to back up their claims.

Then the wind changed for Bottomley and Rawlinson and the old board was no more.

IF (and it is an if) Bottomley had documented a contract and the Board would have signed it then the game would have been played.

IF (and it is an if) Covid-19 had not intervened the fixture would have probably sailed under the radar in October 2021, just as Matt Southall and Morton House were arranging themselves to launch a High Court action.

IF (and it is an if) Rochdale Hornet had accepted the Heads of Terms the game would have been played. Instead they launched a legal action.

Like a lot of our issues, the seeds were sown in 2021 prior to the shareholders removing those who were not documenting things properly.

For England vs Fiji, it was also a secret manager contract extension and secret executive pay rises all of which came out later at Fans Forums or AGM's.

I prefer to look forward not back - and a fantastic opportunity has been missed.

We can go on for ever blaming previous boards and CEOs but that isnt going to do us any good. They are gone - its up to us the make the best of opportunities.

We, the current club, are missing the opportunity to host two of highest ranked teams in Rugby League playing at our stadium in front of a full house and the international media and reaffirming the towns long standing relationship with the Fijian community.

Clearly there are personalities involved so every effort should have been made to hammer out a deal between others from each side, calling on the council and RFL if necessary to help.

There might be plenty of Dale fans very happy with this outcome - but I am not one of them.

Again I am not finger pointing.

It would also be helpful to understand more about the safety certificate stuff. Clearly Dale are responsible for this. There are no restrictions for Dale games, there are restrictions for Hornets games but these can and have been changed between games. So is the certificate specific to individual games? Or is it Dale are responsible for stewarding and other safety aspects of games and so want to reduce the costs of fulfilling their obligations under the certificate for stewarding Hornets games expected to attract very low crowds?

Wouldn't that be specified in the lease? (rhetorical question of course) - it appears Hornets are not renting out spotland but are renting out a pitch, changing rooms and 920 seats in the main stand.

Finally there is an awful smell around the clause that allows Hornets to pull out of the lease at the end of the year - has that galvanised attitudes on both sides I wonder. On the face of it the memorobilia display stuff does seem to be a bit petty - but there may be more to that than meets the (or my) eye.

when hornets terminalogical inexactitudes catch up with them, as they are doing, think on this.

they've never managed to be financially self-sufficient. it's always been skriking and tears expecting everyone else to pay their bills.
no more.

leave spotland and the deal if you dare.

go on. show the town how you can survive and prosper without leeching off RAFC. you can't. Hornets = pathetic.

In sorry but the lying from hornets is despicable. We should let them play for the notice period then let them go. And I hope Mayfield never lets them near the club again. It pains to say as a long life hornets fan and player they can go to rot. Up the field

Without getting into the fine details of who did what and when, once the problem arose - and notwithstanding the stupidity of initiating legal action against Dale - i fully agree with you: further efforts should've been made by ALL parties concerned to get this game played at the COA

It would've been great for the town, for the Fijian community here, for Hornets AND for Dale if an agreed set of terms could've been hammered out. For all i know, our BoD might've tried to achieve this. I agree that having a legal action slapped in your face isn't conducive to such an agreement, but by making an effort i don't see why both sides couldn't have resolved this, and maybe gone on to a better relationship for the future

It's too late to salvage the international now, with Salford involved and probably already incurring planning costs, but shouldn't this act as a lesson to both sides to put their differences aside and try to come to some kind of amicable arrangement? Today's statement by our BoD sets out the terms that were agreed by both parties, and crucially, properly documented at the time. If Mazey has got the balls to put his recent outbursts to one side (tonight's twitter exchanges suggest he might be moving in that direction) the Dale should meet him halfway and have a relationship reset

What matters most is the sporting heritage of the town. We're proud of Dale, there's no reason we shouldn't be proud of Hornets too - and that's even if you don't like watching rugby. I don't like watching basketball but if we had a local team with a history and a future, i'd still be proud of it

This is perhaps a final opportunity for both sides to come together and get this sorted. Get on with it

Rochdale Hornets Statement
"...The club will make no further comment with regard the ongoing lease disputes and will continue to attempt a negotiated remedy privately and professionally."

Andy Mazey, Rochdale Hornets
"Hold my beer, I've got this"

"some of these Internet trolls and forum rats never let facts get in the way of lies and mischief making."

"The 11k quoted in RAFC statement is wrong. RH pay 18k plus VAT which equates to pretty much 100% of the clubs central funding. RH terms got agreed at a sustainable level as part of a wider agreement which allowed RAFC to get what they wanted/ needed inc full ownership of COA."

"Rugby League is not football and 15-18k from my experience at other clubs is about right but in RH case was a favourable deal for RAFC in acquiring full ownership and control of the asset so arguably a good deal for both."

"the relationship was a very strong one until earlier this year when the validity of RH lease was unsuccessfully challenged. It’s gone from bad to worse since unfortunately and RH are suffering badly as a result."

Oh dear.

Finished 22-53, a serious injury to Hitchcox, three yellow cards (again!) and a red card.

Wheels falling off the season? Or instant karma for comments such as "They will get relegated from the FL. I will party when they do. " on their forum?

That football club he once referred to as "The Dale FC" in a letter to the Observer which was, unsurprisingly, sticking up for Hornets.

Fifth in the league after that on points difference from Doncaster.
Next up is….Doncaster away.
Their discipline has been awful all season going off the number of yellow cards they’ve received and today doesn’t look any difference.
Be interesting to see the attendance. And that for the London Skolars game last week which I haven’t seen published.

Crusaders win in the last few minutes, makes every remaining Hornets game a must win.

Table:
1st Keighley - P14 - 28 points
2nd Crusaders P15 - 24 points
3rd Swinton P14 - 22 points
4th Hornets P13 - 20 points
5th Doncaster P14 - 20 points

Hornets remaining 7 games:
London (h)
Swinton (h)
Doncaster (a)
Cornwall (h)
Crusaders (a)
Wales (h)
Keighley (h)

A really bad weekend of results for Hornets and a massive swing in the points differential. Looking at the table the best they look to hope to finish will be 4th and to do that they will have to beat Doncaster and Crusaders away from home.

Table:
1st Keighley - P15 - 30 points (+653)
2nd Crusaders P16 - 26 points (+320)
3rd Swinton P15 - 24 points (+352)
4th Doncaster P15 - 22 points (+216)
5th Hornets P15 - 22 points (+185)
6th Hunslet P16 - 17 points (+81)

Hornets remaining 5 games:
Doncaster (a)
Cornwall (h)
Crusaders (a)
Wales (h)
Keighley (h)

I've just ventured onto the Hornets facebook page. I was amazed to see Mazey commenting in public all over the comments on the post about their board statement earlier in the week.

The statement LITERALLY says they will deal with it 'privately & professionally'.

https://www.facebook.com/100063501612896/posts/pfbid0ar9hXue4MFSBdC6avHij6uhRuzg

Kerr, or anybody else with influence, needs to coach Mazey on being quiet and professional, especially when he is talking about the 'spirit of the agreement' not being kept by the football club.

I feel genuinely sorry for Dale fans who follow Hornets too, its a rubbish situation. I also worry that Hornets fans have blinkers on when it comes to the future direction of their club. Not all are totally blind, though... there was a group of blokes in a Rochdale pub last night vocally complaining about how the football club have 'shat on them' and 'don't want them there' but they were also very clear that Mazey and his approach is also doing them no favours. Maybe there is hope for them after all.

Also appears that on loan Kieran Rush has deliberately booted a ball into the crowd and had a laugh about it, with some online calling it 'common assault'.

Bad, bad day at the office.

Mazey seems to have lots the plot on social media almost to the point where he is trying to goad a reaction.

When you start referring to social media users as "internet trolls and forum rats" its probably time to switch off your devices.

A really bad weekend of results all round at Spotland…but I have got used to my teams being 0-2 at weekends over the years. At least the switch to ‘summer rugby’ meant it happens less often.

There is a glimmer of hope given that they should really crush Cornwall and West Wales and that Keighley May already be on the beach having clinched automatic promotion by the time that they reach Spotland.
Doncaster really look to have come good at the right time though.

No blinkers here…..a very sad day when Mazey and his buddies bought the entire orgaization for a round of drinks. Like most of us, he doesnt change. Sadly the Co-op ownership that preceeded him did no due diligence. What you see is what they gotI expect the exit clause on the lease for Spotland will be activated at the end of the year and Hornets will be nomads next season playing here, there and everywhere while he tries again to move a team to Manchester.

No gloating please, it will be a sad day for the town, and Dale have been on the brink before…the name Tommy Cannon rings a bell and we were one shareholders’ vote from potential oblivion last year.

According to the announcement though the exit clause is one sided in Hornets favour so wouldn't be instigated by the club.

Reading it Hornets have a very favourable, almost charitable level of rent of a decent stadium for that level of rugby. If it is instigated then it will be Mazey and co doing that and I'm sure they said when they came in in 2020 that they couldn't move the team or the ground.

Their big problem is there is no money in rugby league generally and certainly not low down in League 1, hence why the RFL are reorganising to 2 divisions of 10 in 2023 and displacing up to 17 teams in doing so.

yes its Hornets clause and it gives Mazey the opportunity to leave town, all he ever wanted at Swinton, and all he wants here. They will be able to rent out non league and RU grounds out cheaper than the lease at Spotland while he tries to set up shop at the athletics track at Etihad.

He seems to have friends in many places in RL so wouldnt surprise me if his club survives the ‘cut’.
