Swansea City v WBA : Matchday Thread : 2021/22 AFTERMATH 14:31 - Oct 17 with 18496 views | NotLoyal | Following the swans dominant performance against Cardiff next up at the newly named stadium are West Bromwich Albion in the EFL Championship. It’s a night game which means it will be dark, and there will be floodlights and chips no doubt as well. Match Officials, There will be a referee, and two other chaps there with flags, another chap will be there but not on the pitch, well, sort of not on it but he will be. Referee SIMON HOOPER Flag blokes Daniel Robathan and Derek Eaton Bloke everyone shouts at called the Fourth Official : Lee Swabey, Hoppy hasn’t reffed a swans game this season, he will be easily spotted as he has a John Hartson haircut. Swans record against WBA Games won: 18 Games drawn: 10 Games lost: 17 Latest form guide Swansea City 0 WBA 0 The last time the sides met was on the 7th March 2020. The game ended in a 0-0 draw. It was Swansea who threatened first as defender Joe Rodon saw a header blocked after rising high to meet a Conor Gallagher free-kick, while Andre Ayew could not divert Rhian Brewster's drive goal-wards. Albion were probing at the other end, but the team who began the day as the division's leading scorers struggled to open Swansea up. Freddie Woodman was forced into action just once before the break, the on-loan Newcastle goalkeeper diving to his left to save Callum Robinson's shot after Swansea had given the ball away on the edge of their own box. The breakthrough might have come seconds after the restart as Matt Grimes' drive was parried by Albion keeper Sam Johnstone and Jay Fulton sliced the rebound over the bar. A low Grimes free-kick saw Fulton send another effort over the top before Romaine Sawyers' deflected long-ranger whistled over Woodman's goal. Ayew then saw an overhead kick drift too high before Albion skipper Jake Livermore shot wastefully off target in the dying minutes. https://www.fansnetwork.co.uk/football/swanseacity/news/56017/swansea-city-on-a- https://www.fansnetwork.co.uk/football/swanseacity/news/56028

Swansea City v WBA : Matchday Thread : 2021/22 TUES UPDATE on 21:31 - Oct 21 by Fireboy2 | Can I join you in the minority please winny? Hes a decent player but we have 3 midfield players who imo are playing better than him but that's just my opinion. If he wasn't captain and in the last year of his contract he wouldn't be in the starting eleven, yes that's just my opinion again. |
As I've said elsewhere. I'd like to see the midfield that ended last night's game with Downes playing instead of Grimes. Just to see what happens.

Swansea City v WBA : Matchday Thread : 2021/22 TUES UPDATE on 21:06 - Oct 21 by Dr_Winston | Don't rate him. Never have. He's making a contribution at the moment but it's nothing particularly special or irreplaceable. I guess it's just something I'm missing. Or not, and when he goes people will wonder what the hell the fuss was about. Time will tell. I'll just quietly sit here in the minority for the moment. I'm used to it. |
As you well know, football is very subjective, and I was of a similar opinion as yours concerning Grimes, however my opinion of him has changed for the better, quite significantly. Hopefully so will yours, but I've got a feeling it won't.

He's playing better than he was under Cooper. Wouldn't dispute that at all. I just don't think what he does is all that. I don't doubt he has the technical ability, but there's something in his head that stops him from being all he can be. On three or four occasions last night a quicker ball from him would have set us loose, but he delayed. Downes is more dynamic by far. I'd just like to see how we do sans Grimes. If we're worse then fair enough, I'll stand corrected.

Swansea City v WBA : Matchday Thread : 2021/22 TUES UPDATE on 10:08 - Oct 21 by Flynnidine_Zidownes | Downes is obviously struggling for fitness. he’s one of the first names on the team sheet but they are clearly managing his minutes at the moment. |
I think he had a knock. I don’t see any evidence of the managing his fitness - hasn’t he played through every game bar WBA (and obviously the ones he missed through Covid). He’s played 788 minutes in ten games playing the full 90 in 6 of them.

He breaks lines with his passing, he keeps it simple when needed, he makes most tackles, blocks, interceptions consistently. As I said earlier, he's a constant fixture in this team since Potter really and he's proving why. |
Lies, damn lies and statistics! I judge by what I see and I definitely want him to be what you and others think he is. But he ain’t.

Downes has to show a lot more. Becoming very comfortable playing his safe sideways passes to Naughton and retreating away from the game. In his first few games he was carrying the ball forward, but last night he did nothing progressive apart from two long diagonals late on in the half. The fact that we didn't miss him when Smith dropped into his place speaks volumes unfortunately. He's everything Grimes was characterised as being last season, but so far getting the benefit of the doubt. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

That's an opinion I guess. Against Cardiff Downes was showing for the ball a hell of a lot more than Grimes. Multiple times more. That's not even going into the hustle that resulted in our third goal. For me Downes has utterly shown Grimes up all season in what can be done from that role, but as I say. Maybe there's something I'm missing.

If “my left foot” Hrimes had dropped back into Downes space we’d have conceded. He hasn’t the ability to use his right foot to get himself out of trouble and is quite physically weak. Grimes tried a few forward passes with mixed results. Downes passes back because if he passes to grimes he gets it back anyway.

Grimes was on the ball more than Downes in the Cardiff game. Played more passes (82 vs 68) with a higher accuracy rate (89% vs 85%). More touches (91 vs 80). Grimes and Naughton topped the possession rankings, Downes below Manning in a shameful 4th place. Downes was dispossessed more often than any other player on the pitch bar Moore. So yes, if you're claiming Downes was showing "multiple times more" than Grimes in that game then clearly you are missing something as reality doesn't back you up. Defensively he's done very well, probably an upgrade on Grimes whose work in that area was always underappreciated, but with the ball people are seeing what they want to see unfortunately. He's got a way to go before he imposes himself on games the way Grimes has for the past three seasons.

As has been said many times on here, people often have no idea what they see and often see what they want to see. Stats have no bias, hence why when Pato removed his jersey we saw the 'wearable tech' he had strapped to him. Data is king in moderns sports whether people like it or not, and the sport is improving and being pushed to its boundaries as a result.

Great post. Some posters are clearly Missing something, consistently getting it so very wrong. There is a small batch of posters sitting squarely in the bottom quartile when it comes to football analysis. The current anti-Grimes troupe, says it all. Some of the comments are comical entertainment, from the depths of the herd. . .

I think Martin would say you are missing something with that opinion Doc to be honest, when the changes are made, like they were against Luton when the chips were down it was Downes who made way. Don't get me wrong, I think Downes is going to be a top, top player but Grimes is still the main man here at the moment.

Unfortunately some prefer to troll, and wind up the flock to a pitch. Rinse, repeat, bleat. The reality here of course is that Downes, albeit a highly promising CM, is being slowly nurtured by Grimes to play alongside and allow Grimes to flourish. This has shown glimpses of being one of the most symbiotic (another world oft plagiarised here) pairings on the pitch and Bodde's well for all. Grimes and Paterson is the one to watch though. . .

"He’s trained really well this week and he’s back to where he feels he needs to be. I think it’s important we don't bring him back too quickly and risk re-injuring him. "He played 90 minutes at Luton, felt something then trained again and we had to take him out of training. I want him back as quickly as possible but there’s a long-term plan here and let our heads rule our hearts and not be emotional about it. "He’s back in the squad and in a really good place. It’ll be good to have him back in the squad."

I don't totally agree with AC on Grimes although Grime has upped his game from endlessly passing backwards. Downes wa the fella who et up that wonder goal v WBA and did it with guts, physicality ,determination and ability. IMO ,he is far superior to Grimes but he is clearly playing fiddle and he shouldn't. NOW THEN,Daps etc. See ,I disagreed with AC there but didnt resort to dirty snide remarks . It can be done. I disagree with Dr P and Resolven too but we do so with a little class. The ' current anti-Grimes troupe' doesn't exist. Questioning his play started to show up in Cooper's early days and after he was made captain. Under Potter he was very good in several positions then Cooper came in, made him captain and played him at the heart of midfield and he has been poor. He hides, he loses the ball (but his effort to get it back gives the impression he is industrious) his high passing success is based on very safe passing, he passing slows down movement (e.g. look back at the number of times Cabango, who it is claimed by some is slow, played first touch passes then compare with Grimes). He has seemed a little better lately which I put down to other players being more active. Midfield of Ncham, Downes and Smith would be my first choice.
