Plenty to choose from but '86 has to be the one as we missed the chance to win the League Cup again. We did so well in the cup run dispatching the likes of Forest, Watford, Chelsea and Liverpool who were the kings of two-legged football at the time.
We were clear favorites. Yes, it was annoying the media focused on us and left Oxford alone and the whole Smith-Oxford stuff too.
However, successful teams deal with that all the time and whether it had any effect or not I don't know but what I do know is on the day we were so bad. Oxford's counter-attacking troubled us all day. I think our first shot on target was late on and it came from our left back, Ian Dawes, such was our inability to press forward on goal.
Took until 2014 (which although was superb is not the same as an FA or League Cup final) to finally get to see us win at Wembley.

Quite a few of those mentioned on here, but this one takes the prize.
Great description of why.
"The opposite of love, after all, is not hate, but indifference."
QPR 0 Aston Villa 3 - League Cup Semi Final at Highbury QPR 1 Nottm Forest 1 - When they really were the best team in Europe, they scored (Martin O'Neill) right near the end - we played them off the park that day, but of course lost the replay. QPR 2 Chelsea 4 - FA Cup, in my naive young way, thought there was no way we could lose to them. Think my dislike of them started that day. QPR 0 Leicester 2 - As above And this STILL gets me, as it does Clive I know QPR 3 Birmingham 4 - how DID he miss that pen!

Won the replay, yes. But, we hadn’t set the world alight in the first game.
I don't know - IIRC we 'toed-to-toe' with them pretty much throughout the 120mins and were never overawed by the huge occasion. Peter Hucker MoM, Terry Fenwick, Bobby Hazell. Losing Clive Allen so early on was a big blow.

How did the ref not see several Birmingham players level with him when the kick was taken?

Cardiff away 3-0. Played them off the park and a few crosses into the box and we lose a game by 3. Bristol City at home 1-2. Again, first half blow them away and could have been at least 3 to the good. End up losing.
Smells like a trout farm in here

I was at that Cardiff game and a lot of their fans couldn’t believe the result either.

My memory of the first game is that we were completely outplayed & could have lost by a record score for the final.
Peter Hucker was superb & Gary Waddock kept Hoddle in his pocket with one exception. For the Hoddle goal Gary was about to take the ball of him for the umpteeth time, but Mr Clive White moved into his path & obstructed him!
I can't remember us having an attack apart from the goal & that was very from a long throw. Very unlike Rangers type of goal.

QPR 0 Liverpool 1 (Rosenthal 87) in the 1992/93 season. We could and should have been 3 or 4 up by then and the ground was rocking.
Just watched the highlights. Oh the humanity.

That was the game when Tony Roberts was at his imperious best, hardly anything to do for 90 minutes, two shots on target and beaten by both (I had forgotten about the disallowed one) For me he was a nightmare of a keeper.

Last home game of the season 2003, we were at home against Crewe who needed a point for automatic promotion. A lot at stake because if we beat them then there would be 1 game left that season and it between us, Crewe and someone else for automatic promotion.
Crewe playacting and diving all day long. The ref is buying it every fücking time.
I was in Lower Loft Block LL with a great view of Clarke Carlisle jumping up with their keeper Ince to compete for the ball. He would've scored if he'd got to it. Ince rolls around like he's been shot, 2nd yellow for Carlisle and all he did was jump up to try and win the ball.
It finished 0-0, Crewe got promoted the bunch of fücking cheats.

And we had at least 1 yellow card for supposedly not being 10 yards away at a free kick, even though the Crewe player just kicked it straight at our player as he was retreating.I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone else booked for it since, although Taraabt v Spurs might’ve been for that too. I only wish my memory was better.

Oh yes, I've definitely not seen that given to lead to someone being sent off. I remember at the time thinking it was so odd, there had to be more to it. We were all incensed.

That was a second yellow card given to Stephen Kelly & reduced us to nine players.
Getting a 0-0 draw from that game was exceptional.

Didn't we get dumped out of the Cup at Southampton immediately after the 4-1 at Old Trafford? From "the world will fear us" to "same old Rangers" in less than a week.

Yes. I was at that one. Didn't we miss a penalty too, Wegerle?

And the ‘alleged’ paedo loving manager or theirs, Dario Gradi, was interviewed after the game, and he said that all our yellow cards were deserved.
That game is in my top 3 for refereeing injustices. Andy Hall was always dreadful against us.
The other two are, the Gurnham Singh Tottenham game, which has been covered already.
And Charlton away in the FA Cup fourth round in around 1998 or 99. Rob Styles booked 5 and sent off Chris Plummer. It wasn’t even a dirty game. He was another ref who hated us.

Second Yellow but there should never have been a first. Some seriously dodgy refereeing from Andy Hall. I thought at the time he was a wrong’un and I still haven’t changed my mind. Crewe would not have been promoted without his help.
