Dale linked with former striker Thursday, 8th Jul 2010 19:56 by Col The press has seen Dale linked with a former striker, but who is it? Clive Platt? Glenn Murray? Grant Holt? Dale have been linked with a move for Bury striker Andy Bishop after the press in Grimsby named Dale as potential rivals for his signing. The move would be an unlikely one, but is there anything in it, or is this just proof that it is silly season in the press right now? Well gut feeling suggests that there's nothing behind this. Despite promotion to League One, money remains extremely tight at Spotland, and whilst in an ideal world, Dale boss Keith Hill would love to have four strikers at the club, financial reality would no doubt insist that he will have to go into the new season with three, and then rely on the loan market when required. Also, Bishop's reportedly large wages at Gigg Lane would no doubt put him beyond our finances. Bishop has two years left on a contract that raised many an eyebrow at the time due to the wages involved, and a move away from Bury would no doubt require a club to match his wages. But if the likes of Grimsby are interested in his services, then surely that must put us in with a chance. Bury seem keen to get Bishop off their wage bill after after a poor season by his standards in which he managed just three goals in twenty five appearances, and he would most likely be available on a free transfer. But free transfer or not, those wages must surely put Bishop out of the picture.
